Booze, cigerettes, and yelling = prime death voice

Hahaha. I got drunk earlier today, and I've been hitting up the cancer sticks all day as well, so I'm busting out with the death metal voice like mad. Pretty cool.

With that in mind, what's your favorite style of vocals? I'm really keen on bands that switch up between melodic and growly shit vocals. Not like Killswitch Engage, who are pretty sweet, but like Vintersorg or Dark Tranquillity.

I hate growling/yelling, I prefer actual singing thank you very much. Actually, yelling's okay if its done more melodically.

Acid Bath's vocals are my favorite kind.

They have two singers, but you'd never guess it. One does the screams, the other sings. OMG so badass.

Anders Friden [In Flames] on Whoracle is my favorite. Jotun is godly with the low, almost spoken vocals. Then he lets loose with his growls. God damn, I miss those growls. His voice went to shit on Colony, and then transcended shit on everything after. Coincidentally [or not coincidentally?], so did the band.

I don't have a set-in-stone vocal style I favor...
I'm a fan of Maynard James Keenan and Cristina Scabbia, as well as the antics of Dani Filth.

I like:

MJK
Cristina Scabbia
Max Cavalera
chino
James Brown
Kurt Cobain
and Freddie Mercury.

Robert Plant too.

All mad different, but they allr ule in their own way :'(

Add Opeth up there for great variations

asphyXy 10-13-2004 05:09 PM

Akerfeldt's singing sucks. He has good growls, though.

Sickboy 10-14-2004 06:07 PM

Stanne from Dark Tranquillity does indeed have a great voice. And of course, Lex Icon, Tägtgren and Vintersorg have to be mentioned. And Angela from Arch Enemy.

But to mention something a bit different, then I'd say Christopher Schmid from Lacrimas Profundere

Gertner 10-14-2004 06:38 PM

Sarah McLachlean. Only when it's to a trance song though (i.e Dj Tiesto "Delirium)

Dave Matthews
Angela Gossow
James Brown
Curtis Mayfield
Bob Dylan (I dunno what I like about it. I just do.)
Johnny Cash
James Hetfield (Kill 'Em All - Black Album)
Henry Rollins (He even makes spoken word sound good)
Les Claypool

A combination of singing and screaming at the same time by two different singers, like Killswitch Engage or Alexisonfire.

oh and Joel STOP FUCKING SMOKING YOU WANKER!!!

asphyXy 10-14-2004 09:07 PM

Mikael Stanne's scream at 3:03 of "Midway Through Infinity" is one of the best screams ever.

Sebastian Bach is a godly vocalist.

Mike Vescera [sang on Yngwie's "Seventh Sign" album and Loudness' "Soldier of Fortune" album, among others] is awesome.

Ray Gillen [the singer on Black Sabbath's "The Eternal Idol" demo] is insanely awesome too. He only sang on the demo and was out of the band before the album was recorded for some reason.
