Cigar box PSU

My Father in-law smokes the odd cigar and so he had a few old boxes lying around and I grabbed a few of them. One is being used as a box to put all my old ram.
The other one I had an idea what I could use it for.

This was what I started with, I forgot to take a real "before" shot but you get the idea. Its a crappy little 80w ATX PSU that i want to use to power lights and LED's with.

After a day in the shed I ended up with this.

I used a 40mm fan from an old fried nvidia card, an unused switch from a Cold cathode, a piece of speaker grill and a few left over leds from another project.
Of course eventually the lid will be glued shut (there are some little hands around here) and i just need a 40mm fan grill for it but I think it turned out rather well.

Nice Mod CREDO :)

LoDownM 11-19-2004 05:52 PM

Damn. The only modding i'm doing to my case is gonna be cutting a hole in the top to add a 120mm fan to my case. I should just send you my case and like, 150 bucks, and let you mod my case for me :)

A fan hole? pfft, bring it over and I'll whip out the dremel, crack a beer and do it for free.

JJ Moore 11-20-2004 02:56 PM

i guess with it only being an 80wt PSU, but, fire risk?

Disturbed316 11-20-2004 05:39 PM

Awesome stuff

CREDO 11-20-2004 09:25 PM

No, no fire risk. even if it was a 500w PSU. its about as much risk as your PSU in your comp catching fire. pretty slim.
it will never get hot enough to actually start a fire, even if the fan failed.
