Backlund beating Deisle...

I forget. Why did backlund win the WWE title at a house show over Diesle again?

Was this planned or did something go wrong?

Funky Fly 11-10-2004 11:44 PM

Diesel*

Pegasus Crawford 11-10-2004 11:48 PM

Backlund beat Diesel?

DaveWadding 11-10-2004 11:57 PM

No, it's the other way around. Diesel beat Backlund in like 7 seconds.

KayfabeMan 11-11-2004 12:39 AM

It was planned.

Diesel beat Backlund with the powerbomb right off the bat.

It was done to make Nash look like a major player, and to have this unexpected guy come in with no build-up and defeat the Champion - thus making Nash seem totally credible. It fucked over Bret, as Bret had just come off a hot series with Bob, where Bret sold Bob as a credible Champion and did jobs for him and such.

So by having Nash win, it made Nash look strong - but by having Nash win it made Bret look like weak as ever. Most of the decision was of course Vince's, but Shawn and others talked him into doing it.

KayfabeMan 11-11-2004 12:46 AM

Also, it was done at a house show on purpose.

The 'surprise' factor was big, as marks enjoyed it, and smart marks in attendance were guessing they would see a 'Dusty finish' on it. It added to the "anything can happen in the WWF" fact.

It also had to do with timing, location and such. They wanted the build-up of Nash and HBK and such soon - and where better to have a title change than in NY?

Bret took it back off of Nash though. Rolled him up for the three. I guess Nash didn't feel like selling the Sharpshooter.

Quickest Title Match ever

Danny Electric 11-11-2004 12:56 PM

I remember watching it at the time on TV, being young and a mark i was stunned by what hapened and it took me ages to realise that Diesel was the new champion.
Plus I agree with KayfabeMan it made Bret look weak.

RP 11-11-2004 01:01 PM

Yah other way around sorry. Man i just dont understand. Wouldnt Diesel get more noticed if he had done that on Raw.

Like KayFabeMan said, it was to solidify the fact that "anything can happen in the WWF".

I'm pretty sure that the world title did change hands at a house show twice, this time and another. Also, a few years ago I believe someone won the WWE IC title at a house show.

Then again, I could be going crazy.

Christian picked it up at a house show from Booker T.

BigDaddyCool 11-11-2004 03:54 PM

Also, Bret Hart sucks, Big Daddy Cool Deisel rules all. So nuts to Bret looking weak. Hell Bret lost the title to Yoko, only for Hogan to take it from Yoko like 5 minutes later at a Mainia

Loose Cannon 11-11-2004 04:26 PM

Yeah, but back then I was like 10 and didn't even think about how Diesal winning made Bret look weak.

SuperSlim 11-11-2004 04:39 PM

yeah all saw back then was Diesel winnin in 8 seconds and that was really cool.

I thought it was Christian. :y:

Volchok 11-12-2004 06:18 PM

yeah but in 99 the night right before Fully Loaded Edge won the IC title from Jerett yet lost it the next night back to Jerett..

RemyRed 11-13-2004 02:09 AM

I liked it better when titles could switch hands on other events besides Pay-Per-Views.

Just imagine what the Sharpshooter would do to his quad.

Didn't Bret lose the IC belt to the Mountie at a house show once in the run up to Royale Rumble 92?

Yes he did. That was planned too.

Funny you should say that because the Monday following at school, the discussion amongst the wrestling geeks was why Nash beat Backlund in 7 seconds yet Backlund went 20+ mins with Bret Hart.

Might not know the ins and outs but kids aren't stupid.

Loose Cannon 11-27-2004 08:16 PM

^^See, I never saw the PPV's back then, so I wouldn't of had a clue that Bret and Backlund went 20. And there was no way I was going to say, "Hey, at Survivor Series (was that the PPV?) Bret and Backlund went 20 minutes and now Diesal beats Backlund in 6 seconds. That looks Bret look like a chump." At 10, I was still wondering if the Lex Express would come by my house.

Actually, kids here were just like, "Did you see what Diesal did to Backlund, he beat him in like 6 seconds. I couldn't believe it."

10 yr old Americans don't think rationally very much :D

Rob 11-27-2004 08:27 PM

LMAO Lex Express

Rob 11-27-2004 08:29 PM

To be fair, I was about 12 or 13 when that match rolled around. A year before that, I was caught on camera at Wembley Stadium marking out like a bitch for the Warrior's, Tatanka's and Crush's of the world.

Loose Cannon 11-27-2004 08:39 PM

lol, yeah you said that before. I never marked out for Crush though

Rob 11-27-2004 08:42 PM

I'm more embarrassed about marking for Warrior and Tatanka! At least Crush could squash pineapples and sh</>it and had that blonde mullet going on and funky orange and purple tights and.... er.. where am I going with this?

The Mackem 11-28-2004 08:08 AM

You were going to talk about how you used to shoot your load at the first sound of The Warrior's theme music.
