PAPA SHANGO

I bought the book "WrestleCrap," and there's a bit about Papa Shango. I don't think that was crap; not at the time it wasn't. Am I the only one who liked that gimmick? :shifty:

Prolly not, but it wasn't too bad at the time. Then again, looking back, a lot of WWE's gimmicks back then were pretty laughable.

Stickman 01-06-2005 01:55 AM

I remember that gimmick and I was terrified of him. I remember he made Mean Gene's arm bleed or something, same with the Ultimate Warrior. As I look back now it was goofy, but then as a kid, holy shit.

I was scared of Shango. Cool gimmick though. I loved when he made Warrior puke.

^^lol same time and we started off saying the same thing.

I remember being terrified and disgusted of him when I was a little kid. Him making Warrior puke is one of the only moments I remember seeing on wrestling before I began to watch it regularly.

Drakul 01-06-2005 04:38 AM

I can't say I remember any of that.Got a clip?

KayfabeMan 01-06-2005 06:27 AM

I don't think it was crap at all. Then again, several of the gimmicks they list really are not / were not crap - just different from the norm. Is Papa Shango passable in today's wrestling (due to their new target audiences)?? Probably not. But would Papa Shango still work today if the shows were aimed at kids / families? Sure.

Pegasus Crawford 01-06-2005 07:14 AM

Haha. I remember when he did something to the Ultimate Warrior and made him throw up. I was like "holy s***!" at the time.

The gimmick was great, I like when SmackDown kinda used it with Booker T.

Astley316 01-06-2005 10:00 AM

I remember watching an episode, of wrestling superstars or prime time, and he defeated this random jobber, anyway after the match he made all this black mist come out of the guys boots, was first time id ever seen shango, but it was cool

I agree. Papa Shango was the man. Warrior puking = Ratings.. I think.. ! I won't ever forget that moment, it was so out of no where.

How now was this a good gimmick/entertaining? I remember seeing it and thinking I started tripping on ACID...and when your 6 and on ACID it's a scary thing man...

Papa shango likes abortions.

Anybody Thrilla 01-06-2005 05:35 PM

I don't think that it was the character that is considered 'crap', so to speak. In the book, it was explained that the whole reason that Papa Shango was created was because in Jim "Warrior" Hellwig's mind, the only formidable foe for the Ultimate Warrior would have to be someone who was supernatural. Hence, the Shangolian was born.

From a personal standpoint, I too remember being frightened of Papa Shango. When he made the Warrior puke, I hated his guts, so I guess Charles Wright was doing a good job. He also used to make these weird grunting noises in the ring, which scared me. I also remember when he set some jobber's boots on fire.
