Favorite/Best Cult Film

What are some of your guys favorite and/or best cult films(favorite and best can be the same or different movies)? I will post mine later.

TheNamelessOne 01-11-2005 06:11 AM

Im still a sucker for the Evil Dead Trilogy. Although I prefer the last two.

Dave Youell 01-11-2005 06:55 AM

Does Scarface count?

What makes it a cult film?

PapaGeorgio 01-11-2005 12:58 PM

If you really want to know what a cult film is here are two pretty good articles about them http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=23:3 and http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=23:36 also here is some more about them with a top 50 list http://www.filmsite.org/cultfilms.html there is really no set guide for Cult Films, some films are more arguable then others. There is no question a movie like Rocky Horror Picture Show or Freaks is a cult film, but a movie like Pee Wees Big Adventure is arguable.

I love Rocky Horror Picture Show and have no real reason as to why.

PapaGeorgio 01-11-2005 01:04 PM

Yeah Rocky Horror Picture show is a strange one. To fully get what it is you must see it in a theater with people acting with it. The comments the audience gives are sometimes hilarious such as, Audience: Do you know how to masturbate? Dr. Frank-en-furt(during his speech right before ROcky HOrror comes alive): Yes.....I do have that knowledge. Just little stuff like that. If you can't see it in theaters however I suggest finding an audience script online and go along with the movie with that to get some idea of part of its popularity. The movie itself is fairly bad, the first half keeps you interested but then after that it just gets pretty boring at times.

Cult Flims to me, are flims, that really didn't do well in the box office or sales, but still are considered favorites among people, Starship Troopers, is sorta considered a flim with a Cult like following

Supreme Olajuwon 01-11-2005 02:56 PM

Seeing how A Clockwork Orange is the best movie ever made, I'm gonna have to go with that

Shaggy 01-11-2005 02:59 PM

The Evil Dead movies are a big thing with me.....The Crow is definently a cult favorite among people (First one more than the other two)

and I seem to be the only one who actually liked Battlefield Earth so I guess that doensnt count.

Arashi Kage 01-11-2005 03:15 PM

Highlander :y:

Also, Many John Carpenter films, such as Big Trouble in Little China

OssMan 01-11-2005 03:36 PM

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, just because it was really bad

but yeah there is this one movie theatre that shows the Rocky Horror Picture Show every night at midnight and there are always college kids there acting along with it and whatnot. it is great. like people bring in props and memorize the whole script.

I consider cult films to be more counter cultural films. There is no real set definition of what a cult film is though, that is why there are so many arguments about certain films and if they are cult films or not. To me it seems like you are talking more about Camp Cult Films, it is hard to explain exactly what they are. But at same time you are not just talking about them. What is also interesting is the ability of a film to have a cult status and then later on not be considered one. A prime example of this is "It's A Wonderful Life" for a long time no one really cared about it. It was seen as to cheesy, but eventually it was rediscovered and manifested into what it is today.
I suppose I can talk about my cult films now. To pick one is extremely hard. Within cult films themselves there are so many different type of genres. I could go with a movie that is so bad that it is good like Flesh Gordon. I could go with a movie that is so good it is a suprise it did so bad in the box office like Harold and Maude. Picking jsut one film is way to hard but I really enjoyed Harold and Maude. But at the same time A Clockwork Orange always pops in my head. I have always had troubles picking just one film.

Gouda 01-11-2005 05:23 PM

I dunno... Donnie Darko?

Videodrome was real good too but I don't know if it qualifies as a cult film as there probably are not a large numberof people who like the movie. In fact, a large number of people probably never heard of it.

La Haine
The Warriors
Kids
Mallrats
Donnie Darko
Battle Royale

The list could go on for ever.

DaveWadding 01-11-2005 06:48 PM

It's a Wonderful Life, definitely.

I-Hate-You 01-11-2005 07:17 PM

I want to see Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

For some odd reason, some idiot refuses to release it on DVD.

The lowest price for one of the movies is $60 for a VHS.
