What do midseason rankings mean to you?

So the NCAA, basketball and football primarily, have top 25 rankings or whatever...If a team is #1 in the middle of the season, but by seasons end is ranked #25, what do you take of the midseason ranking?

The example I will use is Purdue football from last season. Early in the season through midseason Purdue was ranked pretty high, consistantly moving up. I'm not sure where they peaked, but just for this thread I will say it was at #6. After reaching their peak, they quickly fell out of the rankings.

So at seasons end they aren't ranked, but at that time of the year was Purdue really the sixth best team in the nation? Or did we just not know enough about them yet?

It's just kind of a weird thing, like if you ask me about Purdue football from last season, I would say that they weren't very good, but at the same time they were ranked top 10 for part of the season. So were they good and choked, or does the system just not know that early?

There was the whole their star QB being injured.

Kyle Orton? I don't remember him being injured, I thought he just choked really hardcore and got pulled.

He got hurt during the Michigan game I think?
