emo???

Can someone please tell me what "emo" is, and give me some examples of some current bands/songs that are emo? Thanks!

Triple A 02-12-2005 10:37 PM

It is softcore punk music. Short for "emotional".

Not really. They are more "pop punk" than emo. Blink 182 would be closest to emo, but they aren't really.

Emo has turned INTO an insult I guess. Nobody wants to be known as emo anymore.

Marc the Smark 02-12-2005 10:43 PM

Okay, so what's alternative? Is it just modern rock? Like Blink and Green Day?

Triple A 02-12-2005 10:45 PM

I guess. It is like "not normal rock". Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots and shit were called alternative at the time.

Looking for boobies. 02-12-2005 10:47 PM

Nirvana were alternative but moreso Grunge.

Triple A 02-12-2005 10:53 PM

Grunge was considered alternative.

Looking for boobies. 02-12-2005 10:58 PM

I know, but I was just being specific.

Gertner 02-12-2005 11:37 PM

emo is gay. that's what it is.

Penner 02-13-2005 12:02 AM

No, it's only an insult when used by retarded internet elitests who think they're the man because they listen to metal, and even then it's still not much of an insult.

Just because a band is poppy and has a whiney singer, doesn't mean they are emo. (this coming from someone who's a fan of both YC and NFG)

Silent 02-13-2005 12:30 AM

Silverstein is emo, well, screamo/post-hardcore.

road doggy dogg 02-13-2005 12:39 AM

Ok well maybe them, I dunno I don't care much for them so w/e

Triple A 02-13-2005 12:40 AM

Yeah Silverstein is. Yellowcard and NFG, not really.

Silent 02-13-2005 12:53 AM

Yellowcard and NFG are just pop-punk, yeah. They have sorta emo lyrics, but it's pop-punk musically.

Alternative is a term used by record companies to dress up the same mainstream rock as something "edgy" and different. Alternative is, essentially, mainstream rock, and people will argue back and forther over who's alternative and isn't because there's no real defining trait, nor has there been since like 1986.

People not wanting to be known as emo isn't a bad thing. It's about as legit a genre as nu-metal, considering half the nerds who are "emo" can't even agree. Throw a bunch of acts together under one genre, and market it to dumb kids.

...Much like alternative, come to think of it.

mitchables 02-13-2005 01:30 AM

Fall Out Boy, while being the sex, are pop punk.

Hollywood Red 02-13-2005 01:37 AM

Ahahaha, I got reading some of those entries I realised how emo I was.

The dyed hair (which used to be long, it's now a fauxhawk which is pretty emo in its own right), the scarfs, the skinny, borderline anorexic frame, tight shirts and sweaters, crying over love and listening to emo music.

But I just laughed about it.

Yeah I'm emo, so what?

So I started blogging about it on MySpace, posting my favourite definitions and then I found this:

Quote:

27. emo
myspace.com and all the fucks on it

myspace is a great place for emo fucks to post gay messages to each other and comment about their gay pictures where theyre usually looking down

So of course it went at the top of the list.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 01:43 AM

Mitch is right, I would agree that Fall Out Boy are awesome but not emo.
Could also add Sunny Day Real Estate.

I've just came to the conclusion that a lot of you have great music tastes.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 01:54 AM

Oh yeah and the movielife.

Could? :P You'd be a right bastard not to add them. And Rites of Spring, Still Life and Fugazi.

If you want to take the mellow branch of emo, you have your Death Cab for Cutie, Last Days of April, The Postal Service, The Good Life, Bright Eyes, Criteria, Appleseed Cast, etc.

Very broad genre, from the emo-core to the screamo. :(

mitchables 02-13-2005 02:01 AM

Armor For Sleep

Like I mentioned earlier, Copeland could go with those.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 02:11 AM

Armor For Sleep
I would love to see them live.
I've also been listening to alot of Bright Eyes lately, he's touring at the end of the month. Bit wary of seeing them in a big venue though.

mitchables 02-13-2005 02:11 AM

For sure.

Yeah I have some videos of AFS live, they look like they rock the kazbah.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 02:14 AM

I've got 'Being Your Walls' live on video, looks awesome.
Armor For Sleep and Sasoin are the two bands I'd love to see this year.

FakeLaser 02-13-2005 02:32 AM

I've seen Armor like 10 times live. They put on a great show.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 02:33 AM

I was checking their site, doesn't look like their playing the UK anytime soon but I hope with the new album that they come over here to tour it.

FakeLaser 02-13-2005 02:38 AM

I'm seeing them twice on the 25th. I'm going to the record release party then they're playing down in Asbury Park later on at night.

Danny Electric 02-13-2005 02:45 AM

Lucky git. I envy you.

Silent 02-13-2005 03:37 AM

I love Sunny Day Real Estate :D

JJ Moore 02-13-2005 05:44 AM

Emo doesnt exist.

The Destroyer 02-13-2005 08:39 AM

What a sweeping remark.

Kris 02-13-2005 09:36 AM

Real Emo = Bright Eyes
