PS2 just crapped out.

So it seems that my PS2 has crapped out on me, everytime I put a disc in (DVD, game disc, or cd) it just says "Disc Read Error" which is really funny because it was working fine the night before. Has anybody else had this problem? Sony says send it to them and they'll fix it, but I'd rather avoid mailing it and do it myself, if possible. Any suggestions?

Funky Fly 02-24-2005 06:53 PM

That is a very well known fault of the PS2. Just send the damn thing in and don't void your warranty.

They fix it free because they knew about the problem from the start.

Cool, thanks man. Sending it back is probably best, I'm not very handy anyway.

Check the Gamefaqs hardware "Disc Read Error" FAQ.

Mister Sinister 02-25-2005 12:07 AM

Do you use your ps2 alot to view DVD, because that's burns out the lense quickly

Shaggy 02-25-2005 02:56 AM

Yea using it for a dvd player ruins it....

I found it out while working at gamestop that because of the speed that the lens goes when it reads DVD's it runs it out really quick and messes it up. My cousin had the problem and he traded his whole thing in. Got rid of all his games and everything.

I figured my PS2 would go first out of all 3 next gen systems but instead it was the xbox.

Kane Knight 02-25-2005 09:51 AM

That makes no sense. The DVD-PS2 discs have a faster read speed than either DVD or DVD-DL do.

That actually makes sense, I bought it used off a friend, and that's just about all he really used it for was playing DVDs. Sucks 'cause I only had the damn thing for two weeks. I was just about done Chrono Trigger too :'(

Kane Knight 02-26-2005 12:40 AM

Mine's decided to go fulltime DRE on my ass.

Time for me to call them too.

Fucking Hell. And people bitch about Nintendo. At least their equipment WORKS.

OssMan 02-26-2005 12:50 AM

Mine got it from me hitting it when it would freeze :$

Kane Knight 02-26-2005 12:57 AM

I don't bit my PS2. Just my pets, my kids, my wife, and the occasional neighbor.

Yeah NES was a pretty stable system.

asphyXy 02-26-2005 04:19 AM

My Sega Genesis still works.

Kapoutman 02-28-2005 12:00 PM

I still have three working NES systems, and one of those original Game Boy from 1989. Nintendo equipment is great. I dropped my NES so many times because I pulled too much on the controller cord when I was young, and it still works OK.

I was more referring to their current console, the Gamecube, but I just passed along functioning NES and Gameboy.

It's more that both other major consoles have had runs with severe issues. Sony worst of all.

Don't even bother sending it in.

I had the same problem and I fixed it myself in 15 minutes.

Kane Knight 02-28-2005 06:51 PM

Stupid idea.

It's far more likely you'll fuck it up, and then they definitely won't repair it. So you got lucky, good for you.

Fox 03-01-2005 01:10 AM

Dont be such a cynic. It's fucking easy - sorry if you can't work a screwdriver and a fucking cue tip.

HeartBreakMan2k 03-01-2005 01:37 AM

It is possible to fix it yourself, however doing so void the warrenty. You can't resale the system to a store (Such as EB Games) and if there are ever any future problems, Sony will not repair it for free (as they are doing for the disc-read errors).

It's such a lasting repair, too.

Most times, this only causes the laser itself to do more damage.

Don't worry, I'm smart enough to work a screwdriver. As a matter of fact, when I was certified as an electronics technician, they even waived that test.

There's also "smart enough to understand the end result."

While I'm proud you've managed to apply your opposable digits in a fashion that involves something as horribly complex as a screwdriver, you're too stupid to see the end-result problems: The oft-frequent maintenance and eventual death if the optical unit, and potential damage to other system elements as a result. Not to mention the fact that your shot of having this repaired is fucked if this tampering is evident to them (Which it likely will be).

But hey, confuse prescience for stupidity, as you applaud yourself for the motor skills to lift a cigarette to your mouth, and lack of intellect to understand the fact that it hurts you in the long run.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

You go girl.

OMG UR SO STOOPD

But yeah, you're spot on, and since the "fix" Mr Sunday Night has proposed is temporary for most units, and you void even the out-of-warranty chance for getting the DRE issue fixed, it's a really, really, REALLY dumb idea to do it.

For the cost of shipping and insurance you can get it professionally fixed, a new warranty for your system, and support.

Or you can fix it yourself, and pray that you're one of the few people who doesn't eventually screw themselves in the process.

Everybody told me to do the same thing. Sure, using a screwdriver and a cue tip didn't destory anything, but it didn't fix it either. The problem was still there, and I had to get a whole new system because of the warranty thing. Lucky for me, that was when they reduced the price to $150. Still, I give a big :foc: to all the idiots who told me that I could fix it myself.

Shaved Monkey 03-08-2005 12:37 PM

So I fixed the damn thing myself. Best way to fix electronics? Shake it violently until it works again. The damn thing works flawlessly now.

Look at it on the Bright Side. The idiots who recommend this fervently are incredibly likely to have their system crap out anyway.

:y:

So at least they didn't just fuck you, they've most likely fucked themselves.

(Yes, there's a chance that they'll never have the problem again, but there's also a chance they'd survive a gunshot to the head...)

PorkSoda 03-08-2005 08:21 PM

I had the same problem 6 months ago. It sucks.

Everything is hard.

Nervous Ferret 03-11-2005 06:57 PM

Mine just died from the same proble. :'( R.I.P

Seriously dude, you need a hobby. Your ridiculous amount of passion about people trying to fix their PS2 themself is absurd, and even funny.

I fixed mine myself - works flawlessly - if it fucks up down the road, I'll try again, and if it doesn't work, then I'll buy a new one. Who really gives a fuck? I was just trying to save the guy some time by doing it himself.

Sorry if I offended you, electronics maintenance God.

GODSON 03-18-2005 07:58 PM

It's so easy to fix.

All you have to do is go to your local Drug Store and buy a disc cleaner cd. Put it in the PS2 and it will work fine. The same thing happen to me last year. It's that simple and easy.

Ok, you may be willing to blow $150 if it fucks up permanently, but does that mean that you should give someone that advice, knowing that it might cost them $150? What if he doesn't feel like sppending another $150 on a PS2 that he could have gotten fixed for free?

Irresponsible ass.

Evil Vito 03-18-2005 11:44 PM

Had the problem back in September/October. Sent it in and got it back within a week. Until then I haven't had any problems until a few minutes ago when I tried and am getting DREs. I hope it was just an off-night, I don't wanna have to send it in all the fuck over again.

Last time I checked, I wasn't Shaved Monkey's fucking mother. Calling me irresponsible means nothing to me. Calling me an ass just hurts my feelings. :(

But seriously, it was just another alternative to sending the thing in to the company or Sears or whatever. Sorry for trying to help the poor bastard.

Funky Fly 03-19-2005 06:41 AM

If he fucked up his PS2 and ended up losing the warranty and having to spend $150 for a new one, I wouldn't call it helping.

Fox 03-20-2005 12:56 AM

Your right, I would call it "trying to help."

You'd have to be a one-eyed, half retarded, three toed sloth to fuck up this fixture. You take off the top, you find the reader, you lightly swab it with an alcohol laden cue tip, you dry it off with a dry cue tip, you put the thing back together. Is that so fucking difficult?

Nervous Ferret 03-20-2005 01:11 AM

for a dmb piece of crap like me, ya kinda. Anyway sent mine in today.

Funky Fly 03-20-2005 03:47 AM

That's a laser lens. Q tips are too rough for that. If it gets scratched, your PS2 becomes crap.

And yet mine works better now than it did when I bought it.

Whatever. To each their own.

Nervous Ferret 03-25-2005 01:02 PM

got mine back today :) It looks nothing like it did, and I'mm just like :)
