GameStop and EB to Merge!

Well I kept it quiet for a bit, thought it was still company sensitive info, but it has been officially announced. That means all you bastards that work for EB now work for ME!!! Well not really, but close enough.

I think it's great news for the gaming market, mostly because I think EB sucks

Also, if I have to offer tech support for a whole new software and hardware configuration they better double my f'ing salary.

AareDub 04-19-2005 12:45 AM

Also, to reiterate what this thread was originally about...

Do any of you here work for EB?

Silent 04-19-2005 12:48 AM

That's cool. Doesn't really affect me much since I shop at both stores.

Requiem 04-19-2005 12:50 AM

Wow.. that sucks. The guys at our gamestops here are pretty stuck-up, and are terrible. I <3 the EB's we have here.

Silent 04-19-2005 12:52 AM

That's why you shop online. Don't have to deal with retard workers (sorry, Aaredub.) :)

AareDub 04-19-2005 12:54 AM

Well if it makes you feel better the actual store employees will probably stay the same. The only EB employees who might lose their job are the corporate employees, and I'm just guessing at that. I can imagine there IT department could become pretty useless though.

I work at Corporate now, I have to deal with those same retard employees when they fuck up their registers. I feel your pain ;)

Requiem 04-19-2005 01:00 AM

Yeah, I'll probably just go to the same store I usually do. I play World of Warcraft with all the EB guys here.

KingofOldSchool 04-19-2005 01:29 AM

Ehhhh both stores looked the same to me.

The town I currently live in has Gamestop, the town I grew up in has an EB and both stores always pretty much looked the same. :-\

So I always assumed they were owned by the same outfit to begin with.

Funky Fly 04-19-2005 04:08 AM

There is a Gamestop about 5 minutes from my place. This news affects me in no way, since the nearest EB games is a 20 minute drive on the highway.

SuperSlim 04-19-2005 08:06 AM

I have Gamestop like a 10 minute walk from uni. EB is like a 10 minute drive from uni.

The guys at GameStop seem nicer than the guys at EB though. I dunno.

McDoogle 04-19-2005 11:09 AM

They have to merge to compete with EA.

Jonster 04-19-2005 11:59 AM

How in the hell would a retailer have to compete with a company that makes games?

It's actually to compete with Wal-Mart and Blockbuster as far as I can tell.

el fregadero 04-19-2005 01:38 PM

I've bought my last two games (the only two I've bought since San Andreas) at Wal-Mart and I plan on buying all future games there as well.

Ninti the Mad 04-19-2005 01:43 PM

The people at the Gamestop here are incompetent.

Also, EB usually has better trade-in deals.

AareDub 04-19-2005 03:04 PM

I was under the impression that Gamestop always had the better trade in deals, but then again I've never been too aware of EB's deals. What kind of offers do they usually have on trades?

James Steele 04-19-2005 05:11 PM

Are you fucking kidding me?

Gamestop offered me 1 cent for a game ONLY if it was in perfect condition. Any scratch or anything it would be worthless. WWF War Zone deserved more respect than that.

DS 04-19-2005 05:39 PM

Yeah EB has way better offers then Gamestop does.

OssMan 04-19-2005 05:40 PM

what There is a Gamestop and an EB Game in the same "strip mall" round here. EB is so much better also, Gamestop offered me $75 for my disc read error ps2 and complained that it was missing some part, but EB game me $120 for it and didnt say it was missing anything.

UmbrellaCorporation 04-19-2005 05:40 PM

I've shopped at Gamestop one time. That was when I preordered Resident Evil 4, and only to get the Metal Tin.

Aside from that, the Gamestop here is terrible.

The EB on the other hand has competent, friendly employees (I play Outbreak and Halo 2 with a few of them), and the store always has good stock, whereas the most happening thing at Gamestop here is Superman 64.

I'm willing to give it a chance, but only if Gamestop gives in to EB's awesomeness.

I've seen deals where if you trade in 3 older games, they'll give an extra 10 dollars of credit along with the price.

Ninti the Mad 04-19-2005 07:53 PM

I got loaded on PSX for 2 dollars at EB

The prices for playstation games at Gamestop is ridiculous sometimes.

Pegasus Crawford 04-20-2005 01:55 AM

like it matters to me. There isn't an EB in my whole state and there are like 5 Gamestops within a 6-mile radius of my house.

Gamestop does that quite often. The also add 10% extra with a GI card. They'll also throw an extra 20% on most of the time if you're reserving a big title or system. ;)

Ninti the Mad 04-20-2005 01:24 PM

Not here.

All the card if good for is used games.

OH WOW 10% all used games that cost around 5-10 dollars to begin with!!!!

The Destroyer 04-20-2005 02:34 PM

EB bit the dust over here years ago when they merged one of their big competitors. Guess the company as a whole hasn't been doing very well.

HeartBreakMan2k 04-20-2005 03:02 PM

Yeah, I work at EB and have been keeping this for a bit too. Forgot you worked up at Gamestop Aar, we were told not to tell. And yes, it only effects the higher ups. It came as a bit of a shock since both companies were doing incredibly well.

Apparently the companies are keeping our (EB's) trade policy and the coporate people will be the only ones affected (district/regional managers etc). Overall it's great, plus I do profit sharing so my stock fucking made me a ton.

The effect won't take place until next year as both companies already have their financial plans set, so though we will cooperate with one and another on certain promotions, we'll continue to operate to our individual financial plans for the rest of the year. Some stores will be closed, but other than that. No big effect outside of the fact that Barnes and Noble (who on Gamestop, funcoland, babbages, and soon EB) have a fairly good sized share of the gaming industry in their pocket.

Most specifically Blockbuster since they are about to do and incredibly huge expansion on their game store. Their trade in rates are way better than ours honestly, so the merge will help compete.

The trade in bonus with the card just started in March. If you use the card right and hit the right promotions you can save quite a bit of money with it.

Anyway, like it was said, it will be next year before any big changes start going into effect. There are talks of closing as few stores as possible, even keeping multiple stores open in the same mall. Sounds crazy to me, but you never know. In all honesty it's kinda bad timing on Gamestop's part because we are right in the middle of moving the corporate office. Once next year hits, we're going to need to expand again, at least in the IT department if not the rest of the building as well. It'll be interesting to see how things pan out over the next year.

Yup. I've taken advantage of that a couple of times. I mean, considering the price is what, 10-15 bucks, and I tend to buy used games instead of new, it's a nice deal. Then I sell off the ones I don't want anymore, and get another 10%. Even if you're only getting money back on a 5 or 10 dollar game, it adds up.

Plus, the e-mail promotions are pretty nice.
