New Baseball Offseason Thread.

Big stuff from today (Dec. 9th):

My boy Bartolo (Colon) is now an Angel.
Everyday Eddie is a Mariner through 2006
Tim Worrell signed with the Phils.

Discuss and stuff.

PsychoSport 12-09-2003 08:09 PM

Boo I wanted the Jays to get Worrell. How much did he sign for?

Supreme Olajuwon 12-09-2003 08:17 PM

Sheffield apparently pissed Steinbrenner off by asking for more money and now he may not sign with the Yanks

Gertner 12-09-2003 08:22 PM

the Jays signed Kerry Lightenberg. Ah well, he's better than what they've got now.

Loose Cannon 12-09-2003 08:28 PM

I was actually surprised by Eddie signing with the Mariners. I was thought the Twins would do everything they had to do to sign him since they got rid of Milton and Hawkins. And I still think Sheffield will come to the Yanks even though that jackass wants more money. Sorry

I've been hearing a tun of rumors about Nomar and A-Rod these past few days. I heard the Angels, if they got Colon and they did, would trade Washurn and Kennedy to Boston for Nomar if Boston traded Manny Ramirez for A-Rod.

Yashamaga 12-09-2003 09:08 PM

boston doesn't want washburn. thay trade will not happen.

If the A-rod thing goes down I will be happy, but if it doesn't I'll be ok with that too. Manny may not be a good clubhouse guy but he's productive. and Nomar deserves better treatment then he's getting, he's done alot for us.

PsychoSport 12-09-2003 09:12 PM

I really don't see why everyone wants the Red Sox to revamp their team and possibly screw up chemistry by bringing in A-Rod and such, they were pretty close last year. Keep the boys together, I say.

Lightenberg was a good pickup for the Jays

Why would Eddie Guardado sign with the Mariners? Of course I am bitter that he was a crybaby and didn't resign with the team that made him (And LaTroy) but he didn't want to go to Boston because he wasn't offered the closing spot, so why would he go to a team with Hasegawa, Sasaki, Benitez, and Rhodes (For now). At least sign somewhere where you can be good. Anyway, Miz you win this one. Eddie isnt a great pitcher, but he can get the job done. Just dont make him cry like the Twins did

BCWWF 12-09-2003 10:46 PM

Also, be careful, VEL might get jealous and try to overtake this thread with one of his own...

JK VEL, good riddance

wow yash actaully said something that made sense about the Red Sox

DegenerationY 12-09-2003 11:15 PM

The Giants bid goodbye to eight free-agent players Sunday, including shortstop Rich Aurilia, a hot property this offseason who had been with San Francisco since 1995.
The club also declined to offer arbitration to reliever Tim Worrell, catcher Benito Santiago, pitcher Sidney Ponson, outfielders Marvin Benard and Jose Cruz Jr., first baseman Andres Galarraga and second baseman Eric Young.

WTF NO

They keep Snow and get rid of Aurilia, Cruz Jr and Worrell?

GOD DAMMIT the giants are going to suck next year :'(

5 words: Jason Schmidt and Barry Bonds.

I wish Vlad would sign with the Angels, but I guess we've already spent our big money. We need a RF too, since Salmon is getting a bit old and could benefit by being DH.

Of course, Mr. Viagra Salesman (aka Rafael Palmiero) is interested in Anaheim, and we need a 1B too, so that'd be cool.

You're a dumbass. Benitez is an FA and Rhodes wasn't offered arbitraition.

Loose Cannon 12-10-2003 01:47 PM

I just read that Fernando Vina signed with the Tigers. I think its a very good pickup for a team like the Tigers, who have no all-start callibar players on tier team at all right now. Vina is not the best second baseman in the world, but he is a very good addition to any team. He can put up good numbers as a leadoff or 2nd spot hitter.

You can read the full story here :http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1682929

DaveWadding 12-10-2003 02:02 PM

Cubs shoulda signed Vina and let Grudzielanek go..

Another post by you, and another day of laughter...

Really, when I have a bad day, I just look for one of your posts, too bad I'm laughing at you, not with you.

VonErich Lives 12-10-2003 03:47 PM

ok... A-rod for Manny is a good deal. How does this hurt the chemistry? Manny is a cancer in the clubhouse and A-rod isn't.

Nomar been treated fine, you never put the player before the team. You never tell a player "He, we might trade for a SS and when we might trade you"

Heck, he turned down 15mil a year for 4 years.

Then the market tanked, so now he's putting on a media blitz to try and get his money. That's all.

Good player, yes... Better then A-rod? Never.

Manny 20mil + Nomar 10-15mil. Pays for A-rod, plus A-rod has gone to MLBPA to discuss a restructure of his contract.

BCWWF 12-10-2003 03:53 PM

Its not as much the skills of the players, because clearly A-Rod is a better player than Nomar, and the Red Sox would benefit by making these moves. Its the fact that the people of Boston will shit bricks if Nomar is traded.

Yeah your very right. I'm a Yankees fan, but if I were a Red Sox fan  , I would be really pissed if they traded Nomar. Nomar is the leader, captain, and pride of the Red Sox IMO, and he's one of those guys I can't see on any other team other then Boston. Its like Jeter with the Yankees. I could never see him playing for another team and If he were to get traded I would be shocked and furious.

VonErich Lives 12-10-2003 06:24 PM

Actually, most the fans are more then happy to make this move.

While nomar has done some good charity work, he's always been viewed as someone who doesn't really enjoy it here and can't handle the pressure. He hides from the press, he chokes in the big games.

That all being said, most people seem to be fine with the idea, especially where it means moving Manny.

Especially now, the only time Nomar has ever "reached out" was a clearly BS PR move, calling into a local Radio Station. Plus his agent tried using the press and they both got bitch-slapped by John Henry.

Nomar and agent "Waaaahh... no one talks to us, no one tells us what's going on, they don't want' us here"

Henry "Well, we offered him 60million over 4 years and he turned it down, so we need to explore other options"

and Nomars call was such crap, he kept saying how he didn't know where people go the idea he didn't want to be here, yet never said he did. He was asked questions like "If the Sox get A-rod, would you be willing to try 2nd or 3rd" and he dodged the question "I can't really speak on that, since the Red Sox haven't told me what's going on"

anyway, I've always been a Nomar fan... but he's looking like a real ass like now. If it's all because of his agent he should fire him. Turning down 4 years at 15mil a year in Spring Training was stupid, everyone saw a market correction coming.

The Outlaw 12-10-2003 09:40 PM

Nomar is the man.

I don't know about Ponson. I think he was just a one year wonder if you ask me. But Baltimore seems to be building a nice little team up there and I'm convinced thier going to sign Guerrero or even Pudge, so I don't know if they should let Ponson go just yet. But the Blue Jays could use a decent arm, so he would be a nice addition to follow Mr. Cy Young, Roy Halladay.

The Icon of Elisim 12-10-2003 10:59 PM

They let Ponson go when they traded him to the Giants

Yeah sorry, I just went to check cause I thought he was traded from San Fran to Baltimore, but it was the other way around. I don't know what I was thinking. But yeah I think he would fit better on the Jays then the Giants right now.

BCWWF 12-10-2003 11:12 PM

I feel bad for Baltimore. Its shitty, especially this year, cause they will probably get Vlad and/or maybe Pudge or Javi and spend some money, but they really have no chance of getting into the playoffs.

BCWWF 12-10-2003 11:16 PM

Anyway, there is a very slim chance that the Twins might sign Urbina. His agents contacted them right after word that Eddie went to Seattle came out. I doubt that will go anywhere though, he may fit in will with the team but his salary is a bit high for the Twins.

There was also some talk of looking into Mike Williams, but I doubt that too. He just wasn't really good on Philly last year. I dont know, at least the papers label it slim.

The Twins closer is totally up in the air. We have Nathan who is most likely, then JC Romero, and then there is a prospect who could be called up. He is supposed to still have a year down in the minors though, that'd suck to rush him.

Why do you think this?

Also, @ Sheffield wanting more money.

I figured ole George would have forked over the money like he always does. But word is now that they made a call to Vlad's agent.

Yeah, I hope Sheff does the deal, I'd rather see Sheff there then Vlad. (I say this being a Sox fan) :)

Bad Guy 12-11-2003 06:18 AM

Isn't there talk of the Tigers going after Tejada?

MoRcHeEbA 12-11-2003 12:18 PM

yeah, but Tejada doesn't want to go there anyways. haha but they're offering him some money to go there or soemthign though.

Loose Cannon 12-11-2003 12:33 PM

The Tigers should worry about pitching before going after someone like Tejada. I mean I unserstand they want a franchise player on thier team, but if one of your best pitchers is Nate Cornejo, you have a problem.

TheJShow 12-11-2003 12:44 PM

sounds like Tejada might end up on the Red Sox if the deal with A-Rod doesn't go through.

Nomar may be too pissed to want to stay. :meh:
