I really think this will be a good movie. OK, I want it to be a good movie, in honour of the original. What's the buzz going on with this movie?

I dunno about the buzz but this is on the top of my list of movies I want to see.

I'm not too sure if I like this one or not, but Spielberg is great at doing big-budget scifi movies, so that's a positive.

At the very least, it probably won't be the worst modern adaptation of a classic scifi novel; I, Robot still holds that title tightly.

This movie should rock

Looks spectacular. At first I couldn't imagine Tom Cruise in that role but since then I have become more optimistic. Going to go see it when it hits the theaters.

I've been listening to the Jeff Wayne soundtrack, awesome stuff with Richard Burton.

I really want to see this movie. Even though Tom Cruise is on this whole Scientology thing, I still think he is a very cool guy and a damn good actor.

I like Cruise, I like Spielberg. I like summer.

For some reason, I'm not that excited for this. Defintely gonna see it though, opening day too prolly.

But I don't think any movie can top Batman this summer.

I dunno, not too excited about it. The original was a decent film though so I guess it should be ok.

So I hear in the movie that Earth is getting its ass handed to it, and then the aliens bust out some Super Soakers. Cruise will put up with his home and family getting blown to shit, but get his suit wet, and ITS ON MARTIAN SCUM!!

Just saw it earlier.

I thought it was a captivating story until towards the end. The cliche formula struck again and brought down this movie from what it could've been.

It's still a good movie to enjoy. Just dont have high expectations and you will be fine. One thing is movie does well is keep you in suspense.

I'm such an Independence Day Summer Blockbuster kind of person, so I must view this.

I think the aliens were too simplist. Their technology made no sense, and the ending was dispaointing. It wasn't that bad until the end.

I'm thinking I might go see it and then walk out when theres about fifteen minutes left.

I like Tom Cruise. I dont care what anyone says. He's a good actor. He's a dipshit in real life, but a great actor IMO.

I like John Cusak too. Just adding that for no reason.

wow, some decent stuff in the begining but the movie turns to pure horshit so fast, I've never seen a movie crash and burn that badly. The ending is so utterly Deus Ex Machina it's not even funny. Before anyone says it I am aware the ending is right out of the novel. The fact of the matter is you can have the true to the book ending but even if it works in the book, if you don't build up to it properly in the movie it will not work.

Well, what would you suggest? Wiping the aliens out with a computer virus like the last modernized version of WotW?

There's really no way around making an ending to the story that doesn't just peeter out. After the human race hits the Martians with everything, the Martians still win, only to get taken out by common germs. That's the way H.G. Wells wrote the original, and that's the way the remakes are going to stay (unless you want to just completely fuck around with the story, like the afore-mentioned Independence Day) It might not be entirely impossible to make that less anti-climactic, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a way.

It's a pretty cool movie; saw it a couple of nights ago. I was really enjoying myself until the end of the movie. The way it ended was just fucking retarded, but I won't spoil it for everyone else.

I made a new thread on opening night, but it looks like this one was bumped since them. Anyway.

Ugh, the ending was so bad. Despite the whole deus ex machina bit, it pisses me off so much that they let the son live. Is it so freakin hard to have a main character suffer some sort of meaningful loss (besides the city being destroyed)? I won't even start with the whole thing about Boston being almost destroyed except for the family living there like nothing happened, y'know not even in a state of panic or anything.

Other than that the movie wasn't too horrible. Parts of it had me thinking "so that's what a half-life 2 movie might look like."

I'm not saying change the ending from the book, it would have been worse if they had, though technically the ending has two parts, the aliens dying (which I didn't mind that much though it was still very underdevelopped) and the happy family reunion (the true problem with the ending, the bullshit sappyness of the ending)

As for how they could have made the death by disease work better how about not changing how long they Martians studied, so that it doesn't seem completely stupid that martians who have been studying the Earth for a million years would not realise that diseases exist or that it might not be a good idea to go touching rusty bikes and old pictures that have who knows how many germs on them and other random shit and drinking bad water and so forth A million years is enough time to learn that maybe they need some sort of protective suit at least at first, the book was maybe 10-20 years of study tops, I can forgive not completely grasping everything to do with human disease in that time but a million years? Give me a break, ridiculous. It's pointless chnages like that kill the general plot development.

Furthermore, to make it less anti-climatic, you drop the stupid grenade sequence and have the alien ships all around them slowly start dying, finally ending with the one they are in, then have Cruise grasp what happens earlier and do most of the Boston stuff the same (well I'd say have Boston blown to shit and family except maybe at most the mother dead but that's me hating the happy ending) minus the birds on the robots. There a little more build up.
