OK, WTF is wrong now...
Everytime I start my computer, it goes to a black screen with a message that reads as follows:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to ust the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 [then it reads the same 2 paragraphs as above, then] C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAP.VXD [then those two paragraphs again] C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\AVGCORE.VXD [then that message again] C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\AVGFSH.VXD Any idea what the heck I can do to fix this, as I have no idea what caused it or how I can go about repairing whatever is causing this shit. :( Thanks |
If you're using XP try using system restore. Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools

I don't know if this applies to your problem, but it's better than nothing I guess |

Well, that's easy. Just delete the following keys from your registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\VxD\SYMEVNT, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\VxD\NAVAP,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\VxD\AVGCORE, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\VxD\AVGFSH Parameter StaticVxD under these keys reference the Virtual Device Driver (VxD) that no longer exists. Be sure to backup your registry (just in case). PS - you can use something like WinDoctor or RegCleaner to fix the problem. BTW, WinDoc is able to find and fix a lot of problems concerning Windows registry and missing files. Good luck! |
