Kinda, they're most certainly not mainstream, so I'm not sure how you'd qualify them. But they kick ass anyway. One of the original "emo" bands.

but seriously, since I don't acknowledge emo any more than I do Nu-Metal as a genre, I can't really call them proto emo. Emo's just a "odds and sods" category for trendy agnst.

Type O doesn't really fit in there. Even there darker songs aren't angsty enough for the likes of the pop crowd.
