What's the point?

Chris Benoit vs. Orlando Jordon at Great American Bash for the United States Championship? As my title would suggest, can anyone tell me the point of doing this? Let's say Orlando Jordon wins and retains the title, in the grand scheme of things beating a former World Champion while holding a major under title doesn't do much for the credibility of the title. I mean sure the announcers can drop the fact once in a while, but for the most part the title doesn't gain squat. If Orlando beats Benoit I honestly don't think it will save the sinking ship of OJ's career anyway since he is currently able to draw as much heat as a cold can of beans. And it certainly would hurt Benoit to lose to such an obvious paper/holder champ. Now let's say Benoit wins the title. I fail to see how going from making Triple H tap out and winning the World Title at WrestleMania XX to around a year and a half later holding the US title, on WWE's "B-Show" is a good thing to get him over with the fans. It certainly wouldn't help OJ career (though at this point nothing can help him short of a whole new make-over) and the title itself doesn't get a bunch of cred, as it is Benoit hasn't been main eventing latly so it's not like he has a whole bunch of steam on him that he can take the title along for a ride. I fail to see how this match is going to A) benefit anyone, B) draw anything, or C) excite even the biggest Benoit fan.

Can someone help me out here and possibly tell me what the last few collective brain cells at WWE creative team are doing?

Savio 07-11-2005 04:14 AM

he is currently able to draw as much heat as a cold can of beans.

Actualy heat flows in to cold objects.

What Would Kevin Do? 07-11-2005 04:19 AM

Eh, if Benoit wins, and has some good matches with good midcarders, they could easily build the title up.... THink about it, Benoit, Eddie G, Mysterio, Booker T, Christian. The stronger the US title division gets, the more "prestigous" the world title becomes.

KingofOldSchool 07-11-2005 04:42 AM

Exactly, not everyone can be wrestling for the World Title at the same damn time.

I mean heaven forbid they try to restore some credibility to the title by putting it on someone that is over and respected by fans without SOMEONE bitching about them putting the title on Benoit just because it's not the "World" title.

:y:

Maybe recreate some of the days when Owen, Rock, Austin and HHH were contending for the IC belt. Some of those matches were money, looking particularly at the ladder match at Summerslam.

Or just back to when they brought the U.S title to Smackdown in the first place. They started off well and just thought "oh,fuck it".

They had Eddie as champion. That's not a bad start/re-start for a new/regenerated belt to have. Then after Cena gave it up, they give it to Orlando, who has about as much pull as a leper dragging a cart full of bricks.

Corkscrewed 07-11-2005 03:29 PM

If Benoit wins, the US title actually has credibility again, as opposed to now, when it's worth less than that said can of beans.

Cena had really elevated the title.... and then OJ got it and has done shit with it since then.

That's a little harsh on the leper. And the bricks.

Frankly there just better off giving it to Benoit. People might say it's a step down for him considering he was world champ last year. But if anything I think that would benefit the U.S title having a former world champ holding it.
They can't three or four months (Jesus Christ!) into OJ's reign just suddenly start to build it now. Make it a close match at GAB with Benoit pulling out the victory, if they still want to build OJ then, make him a high contender for the title and make it look worth something in the process.

Even if Benoit wins it, I can picture smarks across the internet yelling out that Benoit is better than the US title and deserves more. In that case, the title would be even less valued and probably worth less than those cans of beans with little cocktail sausages already in.

I didn't really think of it that way. Having Benoit squash OJ would almost be an admission of how useless he is and how under-utilised the belt has been.

By having OJ maybe scrape, or even cleanly beat, Benoit at GAB and maybe a second time before Benoit finally prevails would give some credibility to both OJ, Benoit (when he finally does succeed) and the title. Exactly when was the US title the focus of a feud?

Very good point indeed

PureHatred 07-11-2005 04:09 PM

Remember, in storyline Benoit beat Booker T for the right to face OJ for the US Title. So let's say Benoit beats OJ, which leads to a series of matches between Booker and Benoit, that would definitely elevate the title. Basically, as long as you make the title soemthing that is worth fighting for , there's a point.

And if they can pull it off, more power to them. Two over guys fighting for the US title? Nothing wrong with that for sure.

I mean, it's a jobber title right nowe anyway. OJ has held it for a while, and nobody gives a shit. If he wasn't JBL's "Houseboy," he'd be jobbing in dark matches or fired with the rest of Velocity. That's where his little heat comes from...He's associated with the devil.

i'm cena's biggest mark, but Booker T was part of that too man... their 5 series match put the title way up there, and oj brought it to ground level, and then picked up a shovel.

How? A few smarks complaining doesn't devalue a belt. Firstly, to have a former World Champ be a U.S. title holder means the U.S. belt is worth something. Secondly, most fans will be like, "Whoa, Benoit's the champ... the belt's pretty good." Yeah, he's a former World Champ, but he's 10000000000000000000004858282 times more credible than OJ, and his prestige will rub off. Even if he's not the biggest draw, casual fans know him as the tough wrestler who can beat anyone on any given day, and putting the belt on that type of person can do only good things for the said belt.

Good point. I said Cena cuz he won the feud, but you get what I mean... until OJ, you had solid and upper middle carders battling for the belt. It looked like something really worth winning, and hell, IMO Cena was more credible than JBL for a time, because he was really built up as being unbeatable.

And then he lost. And not even cuz 492 people beat him down... instead, it was just a belt shot... something he'd overcome in a couple of matches before.

OJ has been champ for 3/4 months? SInce I haven't really been watching I just assumed Cena merged the WWE Title with the US Tilte when he won at Wrestle Mania. WHoa, I'm blown away. Yeah, definitel;y give the title to Benoit at the next ppv

He lost the US title before WM.

Morgan 07-11-2005 05:15 PM

OJ mainly has defended it on velocity or on Smackdown against guys from Velocity.
I swear it feels like there have been more No.1 contender matches for the U.S title, than there have been U.S title matches.

Kane Knight 07-11-2005 05:17 PM

Not that it matters. CVelocity title defenses are pretty worthless. They might as well NOT defend the title.

Where's the 3rd K come from out of interest/boredom?

The annoying thing is they bloody well have. They probably only just realized in a brief moment of clarity from their drug addled state.

"We have a U.S belt!?.....and there's a black guy holding it?!!!

Ask the guy who developed it. I just pay him licensing compensation. ;)

"How'd we miss that one?"

"Well, we've been smoking that stash we confiscated from RVD since, like, December."

"The boss is gonna kill us for pushing a black guy."

"Think he even watches Smackdown anymore?"

"Oh. Right. We're safe.
