Best ENGLISH Striker In Football today

Sorry if this has been done recently.

Who do you think is the best English striker in Football. Now here's what I mean by that:

Best Striker (or Centre-Forward, whatever) that was born in this very country, so if I see anyone saying Thiery Henry, Ruud Van Nisterooy or Adrian Mutu, shame on you (as they were born in France, Holland/Netherlands and Romania respectively, not "good-ol'" Blighty itself).

Also no-one had better put someone like David Beckham, reason being, he is not a striker, he's a midfielder...so there!

I doubt anyone will make that mistake, but I thought I'd try and amuse myself, haha..ha.....ha............ha................................. :shifty:

Anyway, I'd say its Alan Shearer.

It's hard for me to say for two reasons:
1. He's retired at the international level.
2. He plays for my teams most hated rivals.

He has it all to be honest, doesn't bottle going in for the ball (unlike Michael Owen, he has his moments, but I think he chickens out too often), doesn't fall over the ball or his own feet (unlike Emile Heskey) and he often finishes his strikes (unlike Kevin Phillips :( ). It's just a damn shame hes retired from England International Football.

Honourable mention: James Beattie.

Bend it like Beckham

BCWWF 01-19-2004 07:02 PM

Michael Owen if I do say so myself

I think it has to be Shearer too. All the other great strikers are French (Henry, Anelka, Saha) You could maybe make a case for Beattie or Cole (7 goals this year I think) but other than that no one really stands out IMO

Michael Owen is a gun. Hes scored about 8 goals and his been injured for more than half the season.
Honourable mention goes to Alan Shearer because of the amount of goals hes scored but if you take away all the penalties and tap ins there isn't very many left.
Worst english striker=Darius Vassel, how can this guy get chosen in the England squad ahead of James Beattie. That also goes for Emile Heskey.

Dazz 01-19-2004 07:29 PM

Alan Shearer by a mile, he is much more lethal then Michael Owen, and scores some cracking free kicks. There aren't many good English strikers though, so the question itself is rather lame, what strikers were you expecting people to say?

And In the Premiership but not born in England, I'd say Terry Henry.

He is one of the best in the country, and has scored some great goals, does alot for the team, see what he does next season, he is just settling in this season.

The Mask 01-19-2004 07:58 PM

I liked Alan Smith a few seasons back. not doing much these days though. Michael Owen is overrated.... Rooney is a fat tosser.

Thats nice, but you forgot to mention who you thought the best English striker in football is.

The Mask 01-19-2004 08:19 PM

I can't even think of any good ones

BCWWF 01-19-2004 08:55 PM

Isnt Shearer a bit past his prime?

Supreme Olajuwon 01-19-2004 09:20 PM

Supreme Olajuwon 01-19-2004 09:21 PM

I thought it would be a more interesting and challenging topic to add, if I'd said simply "Best Striker in Football", you could bet your ass that EVERYBODY would be saying Thiery Henry/Ruud Van Nistelrooy/Ronaldo/Rivaldo etc. A little boring don't you think. But saying English ONLY striker gives it a little more edge I think.

Thats just my thinking anyway.

Cactus Sid 01-20-2004 08:23 AM

Alan Shearer, no doubt about it.

packt up 01-20-2004 08:24 AM

I still think Shearer is the best

I would like to think I would say the same even if i wasn't a Newcastle fan.

Cactus Sid 01-20-2004 08:26 AM

I'm a Liverpool fan, and quite frankly, Shearer pisses all over Michael Owen

Paranoid Rattlesnake 01-20-2004 08:46 AM

The stats show that it is Shearer, you can't argue with stats.

Owen and Rooney have got years in them yet though and i'd imagine owen will be the better of the two

Wengerland 01-20-2004 10:32 AM

Shearer

Honourable mention for Les Ferdinand due to the whole bias thing.

Cruiserweight 3:16 01-20-2004 12:39 PM

Wow... I can't believe so many people still think Shearer's the best English striker. I feel that Shearer is the best, but none of my mates have the same opinion.

Just out of interest, does anybody else hear about how Brad Friedel received 1 vote in world player of the year awards. Some prick thought he is the third best footballer alive!

Danny Electric 01-20-2004 01:11 PM

Alan Shearer because the way he reads the game and how potent he is. I f he weren't at Newcastle then they'd be pretty messed up at the moment because none of there other fowards can finish.
In my opinion if Robbie Fowler wasn't a fat bastard and played the way he used to then he would be the best. Fowler in his prime was the man.

Yes he does

Rob 01-20-2004 03:46 PM

Owen by a mile in my book.

The only two answers there has been is Shearer and Owen, so by having it as English strikers, theres less options, and EVERYBODY has said Shearer or Owen.

and I meant it should have been in the Premiership, but whatever.

yianni 01-21-2004 12:44 AM

Shearer

Unless you count the Masters League

The Mackem 01-26-2004 10:59 AM

Does it have to be someone from the Premiership?
