Wish You Were Here > Dark Side of The Moon

It might not have many songs on it (5), but as far as quality goes - all of the tracks on WYWH are 5 star.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is incredible.

Now I'm not saying that DSoTM isn't good, because it's great, but everyone automatically thinks DSoTM when you think of Pink Floyd and I think WYWH should get the same recognition.

FakeLaser 08-14-2005 01:44 AM

I think they are pretty much on a par with one another.

el fregadero 08-14-2005 07:47 PM

WYWH, DSOTM, The Wall, Animals.

When you make 4 of the top 5 albums of all time, placement isn't that important.

The Miz 08-14-2005 08:03 PM

Animals being one of the 5 best records ever made is really pushing it. Not that it isn't excellent.

JiM PolPot v.W.o. 08-14-2005 09:27 PM

In my opinion, Wish You Were Here is the peak of popular music. Zeppelin IV and Abbey Road are a close second and third.

My quick analysis:

High Point...
WYWH: Wish you Were Here
IV: Stairway to Heaven (i am required by law to say this, although I am partial to Going to California)
Abbey Road: Something

Winner: Draw between Something and Wish You Were Here

Low Point (relatively speaking, of course)...
WYWH: Welcome to the machine
IV: Four Sticks
Abbey Road: Octopus's Garden

Winner: WYWH

Extremely long and Experimental Song:

WYWH: Shine on you crazy diamond
IV: When the levee breaks
Abbey Road: Golden Slumbers medley

Winner: WYWH. Shine on you crazy diamond fucking OWNS.

Album Cover...

WYWH:

IV:

Abbey Road:

Winner: Abbey Road is a classic, but I'd have to give it to WYWH for the burning man.

Overall: Wish You Were Here

el fregadero 08-15-2005 01:26 AM

Personally, I think Dark Side gets all the praise not only becaue it was first, but because it's more radio friendly. The Wall was the last and was just as radio friendly, so it gets alot of airplay as well. WYWH and Animals were in the middle and featured longer songs, which means less exposure.

FakeLaser 08-15-2005 10:20 AM

Meddle is way underrated. ECHOES

El Capitano Gatisto 08-15-2005 02:24 PM

WYWH and Animals are both extremely self-indulgent. So is The Wall, really, but in a different way.

I think Echoes is by far their best "long" piece, while the shorter songs on Meddle are also beautiful, so I think it's my favourite. Followed by Dark Side of the Moon.

I don't really listen to Animals anymore. Feels too much like hard work.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-15-2005 02:45 PM

Wish You Were Here is one of my favorite songs ever but the album as a whole doesn't really match up with Dark Side.

Azriel 08-15-2005 05:07 PM

I almost agree with you all the way Jim, except I think "Have a Cigar" is the weakest song on the album

And about Abbey Road, "I Want You" is longer, more experimental than the Golden Slumbers Medley, and for me personally, its my least favorite track of that album.

FakeLaser 08-16-2005 01:41 AM

Yeah, I agree, Have a Cigar is the weakest on Wish You Were Here.

Echoes might be the greatest song ever written, if you ask me.

My favorites in order would probably go like this (Not going to include the new Waters-less stuff):
Dark Side/Wish You Were Here
Meddle
Animals
The Wall
A Saucerfull of Secrets
Ummagumma
Atom Heart Mother
Piper At The Gates of Dawn

FakeLaser 08-16-2005 01:41 AM

Yeah, I didn't count the soundtrack stuff either.

Boondock Saint 08-16-2005 04:15 AM

Both great albums. Love'em.

PINK FLOYD MARKS UP IN HERE

The Gooch 08-16-2005 07:44 AM

To me this is like comparing The Bends vs. OK Computer from Radiohead. They are both 5 star albums. I guess it depends on what you enjoy in your music listening. For me it varies dependant on mood which makes comparisons like this difficult.

For the record I enjoy The Bends more than OK.

And Dark Side....

El Capitano Gatisto 08-16-2005 09:25 AM

OK Computer and Kid A are both better than The Bends.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-16-2005 09:25 AM

Wanker.

Downunder 08-16-2005 09:28 AM

You are both wrong - Radiohead are shit

BTW I'm inclined to agree with Jim.

The Bends was the first of its kind for Radiohead. I guess I liked it so much because it was so different from all the grunge that was going on at the time.

Seeing them on tour in a club with 500 people for that album made it extra special for me.

JiM PolPot v.W.o. 08-17-2005 02:04 AM

How can you justify mentioning Radiohead in a thread about Pink Floyd?

Radiohead is the minor leagues compared to Pink Floyd.

What he said.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-18-2005 02:52 PM

No, Silent. Downunder is wrong, and you are wrong too. You are wronger, though, because your music taste is just generally terrible.

JJ Moore 08-18-2005 02:57 PM

Has anyone heard foo fighter version of "Have a Cigar", made me appreciate the Floyd version SO much more.

But there version is also really good.

el fregadero 08-19-2005 03:14 AM

Do you mean Dave Grohl's Probot version?

NO YOU ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your music taste is usually pretty bloody good, but not this time.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-19-2005 04:47 PM

It's even better this time, you wanker.

Downunder 08-19-2005 06:34 PM

Bollocks you drunken Irish bum.

How dare you soil a decent thread about Pink Floyd with the crap that is radiohead, You should be ashamed of yourself (even moreso than usual)

MVP 08-19-2005 06:39 PM

I agree with this thread. Except Have a Cigar is my fav Pink Floyd song.

The Wall is terribly overrated though.

I mean, I admit, the more you listen to both the more different they sound, but yeah.

And Radiohead rule.

Yashamaga 08-20-2005 12:43 PM

No way is Have a Cigar the weakest song on the album

It's one of my favorite PF songs.

el fregadero 08-20-2005 08:43 PM

It's great, but have you heard the other four songs?

Saying my taste in music sucks isn't going to make me take on a new liking for Radiohead, so I don't know what you were aiming for there.

El Capitano Gatisto 08-21-2005 06:44 AM

I don't care if you like them or not. I am just putting your opinion into context.

I've listened to Radiohead before and I didn't like it, I don't know what else you want.

DegenerationY 08-21-2005 07:39 PM

Animals is still one of, if not my favorite, album of all time.

Dogs
