Anarchy Rulz 99

At ECW Anarchy Rulz 1999, Johnny Smith was supposed to wrestle RVD in the main event for the TV Title. However, prior to the match Axl Rotten, Balls Mahoney, and Spike Dudley came out and attacked Johnny and the Impact Players. Rotten then pretty much gave the shot to Balls.

My question is: Why didn't Johnny Smith wrestle that match? It would seem kinda pointless for Paul Heyman to bring in Smith if he wasn't gonna wrestle.

Yashamaga 08-24-2005 03:51 PM

Yeah I'd like to know the reason behind that too

Joey Slugs 08-24-2005 08:17 PM

I don't know the backstage story on why he didn't wrestle that night, but I was there that night (sitting 3rd row) and Smith took a pretty stiff chair shot from Balls that "knocked him out of the match".

But I'm not sure if that answers you or not.

loopydate 08-24-2005 10:13 PM

Balls/RVD was a fantastic match. Balls may have looked like an out-of-shape slob, but the guy could work a match.

I had myself a minor markout moment when I was driving home the other day 'cause my local rock station played "Big Balls." I'm sure people were thinking I was strange, driving down M-20 with my windows down (my AC died on me), singing along with "My balls are always bouncing / My ballroom's always full / And everybody comes and comes again!"

I know that's not relevant at all...

But, yeah, I'm curious what the idea was behind the Smith cameo. 'Cause, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't believe they ever paid that appearance off with either a Smith/Balls or Smith/RVD match, did they?

redoneja 08-24-2005 10:31 PM

No they didn't. I've watched the Anarchy Rulz DVD on numerous occasions and I didn't see any indication or Smith getting injured on the spot or anything. The only thing that I can come up with is that Smith got injured a couple days before the PPV and Heyman just came up with an angle that allowed Johnny to be seen on an American and Canadian PPV(redoneja useless triva #237: Anarchy Rulz 99 was the first ECW PPV aired in Canada.) and still have RVD go over someone.

Balls. Tanaka. Hardcore Heaven. 2000.

Thats all you need to know about Ball's deceptive wrestling abilities.

RE: Balls' Being 'Out of Shape'
Well, if you think about, the majority of major wrestlers in older years were not what would be considered 'in shape', but they were indeed good in the ring. That is Vince's major fault today; he doesn't appreciate actual talent - just bodybuilders.

RE: JT Smith
Not sure of the answer. I don't know how / why this guy was involved in half of the chances he got. He either must've been good friends with Heyman, or a connection to something Heyman needed, because as far as talent went, he was just an average-like worker.

Did anyone see the JT Smith went for a plancha and his knee pad caught the top rope? His head smacked the concrete and gave him the biggest knot Ive ever seen.

Impact! 09-06-2005 05:46 AM

 He got micheal Jacksoned, or reverse Micheal Jacksoned, I don't know which.

KayfabeMan 09-08-2005 03:02 PM

I knew I typed something wrong in that post, but I didn't know what.

Now I know.

I do know which one is which, and in reality, they both suck.

KayfabeMan 09-08-2005 03:05 PM

Though I must say, as far as JT Smith goes, I wouldn't apply my full statement above meant for Johnny. I think even though JT wasn't all that great, he had balls [or lacked a brain, I don't know which], so he did deserve a few more chances. :y:

Destor 09-08-2005 03:05 PM

Johnny Smith was dropped because he sucked. cWo has spoken.

I remember that. It was the opening match and it stole the show in my opinion. So many near falls, fantastic match.

redoneja 10-14-2009 05:00 PM

Bump because I still don't have an answer to this question. It's been bugging me for four fucking years.

loopydate 10-14-2009 06:42 PM

 Four years later, I still have no clue, but still stand by that match being phenomenal.

Indifferent Clox 10-14-2009 10:12 PM

Let Mr Lance Storm answer your question my friend:

http://www.stormwrestling.com/030406.html

Q: Johnny Smith showed up with The Impact Players at the ECW Arena before Anarchy Rulz '99. I think it was supposed to be RVD/Smith at the PPV, but what happened instead was RVD/Balls Mahoney. Was there any reason why Johnny Smith didn't work the PPV he was advertised for?
A: I think this was a last minute call by Paul. I think he feared that since Johnny and RVD hadn’t worked each other there was a risk of a bad match and he was trying to protect Rob. Oddly enough they worked on a show after that night and had an awesome match that was better than the PPV one with Balls.
