It's hard to say that they are not considering they invented the genre. They had Ozzy as a front man and some amazing tunes that was so different from everyone else at the time.

HOWEVER, how can you look past what Metallica has accomplished? Forget about the Napster bullshit, Metallica has been one of the biggest bands on the planet for almost 15 years.

My heart says Sabbath, but my brain is telling me Metallica.

I guess so. Metallica only have 3 or 4 albums of note really, for all the time they've been together, and they were the first 4 too. Then you can either be too metal and lose melody, like slayer or something.

I'm really fed up of metal though. :'(

Sabbath rule - Maiden rule more, and as much as I love Metallica - they aren't even on the radar

My pick would be Led Zepplin. They pumped out more songs that really hit a chord with me. Stuff with a 'bluesy' sound as well, something I've always liked.

For some reason I've never felt that Zepplin fit in the Metal category. They no doubt influenced it though.

I also dont place Zep in the metal category. They are far more kickass though then any metal band there has ever been.

Zepplin, by far IMO

Zeppelin isn't metal though, so they can't be the best metal band ever. Most influential, that you could argue.

I remember once reading something along the lines of:

Sabbath forged the metal blade, Priest sharpened it, and Maiden took it and slayed everyone with it.

I would say Maiden, I don't know if Judas Priest is in this category or not but I personally like them as well. I'm never good at categorizing music, if its good I like it and such.
