2005 MLB Playoffs Thread

Yeah, so VEL mentioned there should be a separate thread...so I guess the other one can be unstickyed now that the season is through, plus it'll be easier to sort playoff thoughts and whatnot in here.

Eh, I guess I'll get this started by reposting my preditctions from the other thread

LDS
-San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals (Cards should take this one EASILY because the Padres suck)
-Houston Astros @ Atlanta Braves (Awesome pitching vs. about 15 rookies in the pressure of the playoffs....I like the Stros here)
-New York Yankees @ Anaheim Angels (Definately the hardest 1st round series to predict, IMO....but I'll go with the Yanks)
-Boston Red Sox @ Chicago White Sox (Red Sox will probably pull through here)

LCS (ie: 2004 rehash)
-Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals (Cards)
-Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees (After last year, this is too hard to predict...but it doesn't matter because I think..)

WS
-St. Louis Cardinals @ Whoever (Cards)

------------

I hope I'm wrong about another Yanks/Sox ALCS....but I can unfortunately see it happening :-\

I'd love to see the Pads pull a 1973 Mets and make it to the WS with such a bad record in comparison to the other teams, but that's more than unlikely

NL Division Series:

St. Louis over San Diego (3-1) : San Diego is barely a .500 team, St. Louis has the best record in baseball. Peavy will outduel Carpenter though.
Houston over Atlanta (3-0) : There's no way Atlanta is going to beat Clemens, Oswalt and Pettite.

AL Division Series:

New York over Los Angeles (3-1): I feel like Mussina is going to get shelled in Game 1. Chacon and Lackey will have a nice duel, with the Yankees winning. Johnson will shut down Anaheim while the Yankees destroy Washburn. Aaron Small always manages to win, so he'll win game 4 no matter what, not that the Yanks should have trouble with Santana or Byrd.

Chicago over Boston (3-2): Pitching and solid defense will prevail over an amazing offense.

NLCS
St. Louis over Houston (4-3): If Houston had a solid number 4 starter they'd win this series.

ALCS
New York over Chicago (4-1): The Yankees will just totally outslug the White Sox.

World Series
New York over St. Louis (4-3): It could really go either way, just picking New York because I'm a Yankee fan.

I understand that you are a Yankees fan and that this is your opinion, but if the Chicago pitching staff can shut down baseball's best offense (Boston) how will they get outsluged by New York?

Just wondering.

Holy crap, the Cards/Pads game actually ended up being exciting at the end

They nearly blew an 8-0 lead and were up 8-5 in the 9th with the bases juiced before Isringhausen struck out Hernandez to end it

I don't hate the White Sox nearly as much when they're on ESPN and don't have to listen to the 2 fanboy morons on WGN

Being from Chicago and as a lifelong White Sox fan, I can't fucking stand Daren Jackson as the TV color guy. I watch the games on TV with the mute on and I listen to the best radio duo in sports on ESPN1000: Ed Farmer & John Rooney.

VonErich Lives 10-04-2005 07:50 PM

Well, we remember what happened last year after the Sox got a butt whopping :)

I figured they'd drop 1 to the White Sox, and Clement was most likely.

Wouldn't be shocked if the sox advance to see Arroyo start in his place, on problem is, Clement hasn't come in relief and arroyo has. I'm just glad Francona kinda let it happen and didn't blow the entire bullpen.

Tomorow should be a good game, probably low scoring. Wells v. Buehrle.

I'm not worried yet. Sox lose tomorrow, then it's worry time, but the key is to split the first 2, that takes away the "home field" advantage.

BCWWF 10-04-2005 07:55 PM

The White Sox spanked the BoSox. There was some idea that the White Sox could never win just because they are the White Sox, but its just an example of the media bias. The Red Sox got all the coverage so you just assume that they will dominante, but they got handed to them today.

Joey Slugs was going off about the time of the game, but actually that may have even helped the Whites, because of all those fucked up shadows. Just a thought.

Finally, its not going to get any easier for Boston, Buehlre and Garcia aren't much of a step down. I think Boston will come back and make it interesting, but its just funny how the White Sox were just kind of expected to bow out by so many people.

It's like anything else though, the people you refer to have no clue what they're talking about.

Anyone who has watched the sox knows Clement has had a horrible 2nd half and his delivery has been off since getting hit in the head, plus you can steel at will and the White Sox play small ball.

I must admit, the Teck but was a nice suprise/move and I wonder if Millar didn't get out at 3rd if they might have kept the rally going.

That being said, the pitching for the White Sox doesn't get easier, but the flip side is the Sox pitching gets much better. Wells, Wakefield & Schilling.

I figured sox take it 3-1, and the 1 loss being one of the two in Chicago, and it being Clement doesn't suprise me.

Sox bounce back tomorrow and it's a best 2/3 and the sox have 2 of those at home.

that being said, putting up all those runs is a huge ego boost for the White Sox and should give them a lot of confidence.

Gonna be fun!

Joey Slugs 10-04-2005 08:05 PM

I think I'll take back everything I have said about the start times. Even after today's record breaking day, I think I like having the White Sox play early. It still gives us that "not enough repsect/underdog" look.

You are right BCWWF, the game wasn't supposed to end like it did. And you are spot on about it not getting easier for the Red Sox. They now have to deal with our core: Buehrle, Garland, & Garcia.

I would not be suprised to see Boston get swept right out of the first round (I doubt it, but our pitching is just that damn good). Take a nice few days rest while LA and NY beat eachother up.

Loose Cannon 10-04-2005 08:08 PM

BCWWF: please shut up about the East Coast media bias already. You've only mentioned it 12 times. We get it.

Anyway, I love FOX's video packages throughout the playoffs. Gets me pumped. And I  Joe Buck. Well here we gooooo

If you get to Wells early, he gets rattled and that curve starts to hang.

The White Sox aren't afraid of the knuckle and have hit Wakefield very hard the last few matchups.

Schilling is not the Schilling from last year. He has the grit and toughness but will that be enough? He might not even see action in the 05 playoffs.

I cant wait to hear/see how much New York's collective ass gets kissed tonight.

Fuck the east coast.

Loose Cannon 10-04-2005 08:14 PM

it's really starting to come off as bitterness if anything

Joey Slugs 10-04-2005 08:18 PM

it's not bitterness. all these two do is kiss the Yankees ass throughout the game. Even when Boston started their comeback last year, they were still riding high on the Yanks... even to the very end.

You are a NY fan, so you don't see it that way because you enjoy them talking about your team. It just annoys the fuck out of me. I'm glad that if the White Sox keep advancing I can just tune into our home radio team.

Joey Slugs was talking about how it was bad for the White Sox, but I added that the shadows during midday may be helpful to the White Sox.

Also, I find it a valid point that everybody expected the White Sox to be a dud because the Red Sox have been hyped up all year, but the Sox had the best record and the best staff in the year. That isn't me bitching about the media, it is me laughing at the people who don't know better and believe it.

Joey Slugs 10-04-2005 08:28 PM

Just a little respect for my team. That's all I ask.

But in my own little way, I like having the underdogs (1 win off the best record in baseball mind you) to root for. Today was just an amazing game and there is a good chance that I will at the game tomorrow.

I didn't say it was bad for us. I was just pissed that we didn't get the national game on the opening night.

It works out for us to play in the afternoon the next two games though because of how good Buehrle and Garcia are during day games.

BCWWF 10-04-2005 08:33 PM

Also, its kind of interesting how the AL represents basically the biggest markets in the US.

1. New York, 2. Los Angeles, 3. Chicago, and 5. Boston.

BCWWF 10-04-2005 08:34 PM

Does it help the White Sox to have those big shadows, or does is fuck with both teams?
