How do I find my "WEP Key"

Windows XP

Vietnamese Crippler 10-10-2005 12:16 AM

YOU set the WEP key in your router's configuration utility :o

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 12:24 AM

what does that mean

Vietnamese Crippler 10-10-2005 01:02 AM

You don't need to "find" your WEP key, you're the one that's supposed to make it up.

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 01:04 AM

yes

V 10-10-2005 01:30 AM

lol what the fuck

a wep key is used to encrypt our wireless internet access VIA A ROUTER.

you set it up in your router configuration utility located at 192.168.x.x or something similar

what do you need it for exactly?

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 01:35 AM

Well aside from all other irrelavant info I "obtained" a laptop, but when I try to get "connection" at my house it says somethiing like a network cable is unplugged. Enter the WEP key to continue.

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 01:35 AM

So it is on my router?

Silent 10-10-2005 02:36 AM

Yeah. WEP key is supplied by the admin of the router, it's like a password so that joe blow can't park outside your house and use your internet connection.

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 01:40 PM

oh ok. I got it. :o

Thanks a ton guys

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 02:02 PM

Wait, nevermind.

So is it physically "on" my router, or not. And if not how would I "find" it because I have no idea what it would be

Silent 10-10-2005 02:14 PM

You have to access it through a computer connected to the router, and then you change it from there.

What kind of router do you have? Linksys?

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 02:15 PM

yeah Linksys B

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 02:16 PM

wireless if that means anything

V 10-10-2005 02:53 PM

and you're trying to connect wirelessly from ur laptop right?

go to a computer physically (with a wire) connected to your router

type 192.168.1.1 into your "preferred internet browser"
type ur pass
click wireless at the top
click wireless security under where you just clicked wireless
it will show you 4 WEP keys all of which should work
type one of them (first one is what i use) into ur laptop where it asks for it

Nervous Ferret 10-10-2005 03:05 PM

ALSO YOU WONT BELIEVE IT

My WEP Key was actually writeen on a little piece of paper taped underneath my router. Ecxept it was one character off, so the first thing I tried was what was on that paper, but it was just slightly off. WOW do I feel dumb now. :o

thx a ton buddies
