I would be very grateful if you gods of internet technology could guide me through a simple step-by-step process. I'm not all that much of a moron so it wouldn't require explicit detail, but just a helping hand.

I will offer reps and many sex slaves to all those who help.

Nervous Ferret 11-05-2005 02:21 PM

yeah me 2. no clue what they are

V 11-05-2005 02:28 PM

Ok first let me just give a general explanation. with torrents you're basically connecting to other people that are downloading the same torrent. You are connecting to "seeds" and "peers." You will be a peer at first, someone who is downloading the file, but at the same time, uploading what you've got to other peers. Seeds are people who are done the download, but still helping other people by uploading the file to them.

Now, here is how I download torrents

1. Download Azureus
2. Skip the set up wizard
3. Open port 6881 on your router if you have one
4. Go to tools - options, then transfer

I would set:
Kb/s global max download speed: 0
Default max upload slots per torrent: 2
Maximum number of connections per torrent: 0
Maximum number of connections globally: 200 - 400, you can play with this once you see how the number effects your surfing

Something a lot of people don't know is, the more your upload speed is, the faster you will download. A lot of people like setting upload speed to the minimum of 5. What I would suggest is do a speed test on http://broadbandreports.com/stest take the number you get for upload, divide it by 8, then multiply it by 0.75 and use that as kb/s max upload speed.

5. Click Save
6. Download a torrent off a website, and just open it and choose a save directory, and voila. The face on the left side of the torrent should be red initially, then turn to yellow, and green. If it stays yellow, that means port 6881 on your router isn't open, and if it goes blue, that means the tracker of the torrent is currently down. Not much you can do if it goes blue.
7. You can right click the download bar and go to "show details" and then click files, and set the priority of the files you want to "high" "normal" or "do not download" if you don't want to download certian files in the torrent

Once you're used to torrents, you should know how to play with those settings and the rest of the settings in options as well. these are just my suggestions.

Oh and once you finish the download, you can either stop it and remove it or seed it. A lot of people think that you should seed all your torrents to a share ratio of 1 (So you've downloaded as much as you've uploaded), and some sites enforce this as well. Whether you seed after you're done downloading on most sites is your choice though.

Hope you got all that :o

Cheers Gohan. I can almost guarantee I'll be back here asking more questions soon...

Vietnamese Crippler 11-05-2005 03:31 PM

Wow, that also answered some questions for me :o

Nervous Ferret 11-05-2005 03:43 PM

For me personally, I use bitcomit as my torrent program and I find it to be great!

Funky Fly 11-05-2005 06:45 PM

Nice, g3k.

Requiem 11-05-2005 07:23 PM

torrentspy is the goods.

V 11-05-2005 07:29 PM

What I don't like about torrentspy, is that they don't use their own tracker. It's a second hand source for torrents basically. All of their torrents are hosted on some other site, and you never know if the tracker will go down soon or not. Torrent spy is the last place I go if I can't find something I want.

http://thepiratebay.org is much better, they have their own tracker

what's the deal with Azureus...my download of Lord of War that just got put out on the net with a fully functioning "health" takes 3 days to download from abc, and from Azureus it won't even budge from red.

"Elp?

Jason Cage 11-26-2005 05:57 AM

I'd also like to mention that recently, nearly every torrent download takes over a day to download...and I've heard people downloading it faster with no problems O_o...

Jason Cage 12-06-2005 12:08 PM

*BUmp*

This is happening with me downloading games again agrgrgrggr

they all range from 3-7 weeks left...heeeeelp

V 12-06-2005 02:32 PM

if you've done everything i've explained i really don't know what else to say

there are like a million different things that can go wrong with torrents, but if you went through all the steps i had above you should be ok

here are some things i can suggest
-Make sure the torrent has a lot of seeds and peers
-Sine some ISPs block the 6881 port, go into azureus options and change the port to something else. then open that port in your router/firewall as well. I don't know which port but my friends have said to use high ones, use google to see what other people use.

Vietnamese Crippler 12-06-2005 04:48 PM

Most of the time, your speed should be affected by the seed/leecher ratio. Like Gohan said, check out the numbers of your download. If it's like 5 to 4000, your download is obviously going to suffer. If it's more like 35 to 4000, it'll be slightly better.

Jason Cage 12-07-2005 03:27 PM

Got it fixed. Problem was lack of some java and a really old version of Azureus/ABC. :$

Thanks anyway.

V 12-07-2005 07:08 PM

what :|

next to restarting your computer, updating your software is like the most basic thing you're supposed to do :o

Dragon 12-15-2005 11:30 PM

How do you open the 6881 port? I am on a wireless network and been looking around and can't find out how to do it.

V 12-15-2005 11:41 PM

what kind of router do you have holmes

if it's linksys
GO to 192.168.1.1 in IE, type ur pass
go to applications and gaming
type in 6881 in port number, type whatever for name, and make it "both" on the drop down, and choose ur computers IP.

If you don't have a static IP from your router for your comp it would help if you got one now. I'm not typing out how to do that right now cuz i'm lazy.

If you have another router the process should be similar

Kapoutman 12-19-2005 01:07 AM

If your router has UPNP, you shouldn't even have to open any port. I used to get that question all the time when I worked for D-Link.

In Azureus, go to Tools, Options, Plug-ins, UPnP. Just check "Enable UPnP" and you won't need to open any port. Most new routers have that option.
