Ok I have my guitar amp right next to my laptop because I like to play listening to the song and looking up tabs.

Whenever my computer is on my guitar amp emits a very annoying high pitched noise. Is there anyway to stop this without turning my computer off?

Probably not. Interference.

The only real solution is to move the two further apart, most likely.

are you sure it's not just feedback from your guitar if you're sat in front of your computer and your amp is right next to it?

other than what they said, turn the amp down, it could work, Im more into acoustics though

move the amp and computer farther apart.

Download the songs to a CD.

Can someone explain to me the difference between Gain and Distortion (or Overdrive) ?

I have a 15 watt crate that says Gain and a Marshall that says Distortion.

Also while you're explaining, could you suggets me a new amp? reasonable size too. I'm not looking for concert amps here.

My marshall is an MG30DFX...at first I thought ti kicked ass (after having the little crappy Crate one for so long) but in recent months I've come to realize how much it atcually sucks. There's barely any bass, it broke twice from inside and the sound is just overall crappy.

So like I was thinking of a Mesa Boogie type...but that's too expensive, so I went ahead looked up this Peavy here

Gain is actually a function of even a "Clean" amp, actually. IT's an increase in the signal itself, which can lead to distortion. Some of the earliest "electric" electric guitar functions were achieved through upping the the until the signal became distorted.

Distortion usually is the function of processing the signal, however. But it can come from bumping the gain so much you cut up the signal itself.

In terms of actual amps, I know fuck all. Four years of electronics theory, 3 of acoustics theory, but less than a year of real work with actual amps.

I have a Peavey 5150, its a pretty sick amp. My buddy has a Mesa Dual Rectifier, which also a great amp, but for one thing. The big problem is that you really need to combine amps for good tone. Like the lead on a Mesa sucks, but the rhythm tones are sick. On the 5150 the lead is insane, but the rhythm sometimes leaves something to be desired.

Alot of times we'll get together and split the signal between the two amps. My god do we get the best guitar tone ever heard with the two of them together. Each one fills in the holes left by the other. Its fucking bliss man. Two of the best amps ever made together in one room. Sick shit. I dont know if you've ever gotten to play through multiple amps, but its the best feeling in the world.

Also if you're interested, the recording I posted in that other thread is all through the Mesa.

Hmm. So, all in all, what would you say sounds better?

Cause, believe it or not my small Crate has more bass than the Marshall I own, double it's size.
So i don't know if it's the Gain that causes that. I get two channels on it with no etxra features and on the marshall, where I do have some extras, the distortion just sounds ear-ritating.

Yeah, I i don't think I'll be playing any 200 watt/2000 $ amps just yet. Do you think the Peavy I linked in my other post is a kickass though?

Well for the same prive you can get a 5150 combo. The one you linked might be good, but you're best bet is to try one out and see if it works for you.

Generally, getting a distortion pedal will sound better, because someone actually took the time to model an output signal to specifications. Using gain will sound sloppier the more you push it and is a crap shoot.

I guess it depends on exactly you want it to sound like, but for my money, I'd stick with A decent effects pedal over dicing it with my amp.

I have the Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion pedal, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Hey, on the subject, anyoneknow how you acheive the whole "Jangly Guitars" thing?

The style goes back as far as the birds, but I'm looking for something a little more modern. A good example would be Buffalo Tom, or Polaris (If you're a Pete and Pete fan, they did most of the music to the series)

My axe is so cheap I have only dicked around with cheapass pedals. I've mostly used the Danelectro Pedals. They're low cost, but get the job done as far as I need to go.

I'd suggest, BTW that if you're looking around for amps and pedals, go to a place where you can jack in and TRY them.

Dude KK wtf are you talking about? Distortion pedals sounds like garbage. There's nothing better than the distortion on good amps. Seriously. Pretty much everytime my buddy records a band they show up with all these pedals. Once they hear the amp distortions we get they generally never use the pedals, unless its like a wah or some shit like that. We've tried higherend pedals like the Proco Rat and shit like that, sans amps, all kinds of crap. They all suck. Especially those Boss pedals.

And dont evene get me started on Line 6 and their "modeling". Modeling sounds like shit. LOL my stupid friend was like hey check out the Mesa Triple Rectifier sound on my Line 6 1x12 Combo!!! Sounded like balls. Not even remotely close to a Mesa.

BTW, do those distortion pedals allow me both clean and overdrive sounds?

Like, if I have my amp on Clean, then wI plug the pdeal in, stomp it--turns to overdrive. Stomp it again--Back to clean sound. Is that how it works? Cause I need one that does that.

Yeah they all do that - but make sure its one with a true bypass otherwise levels and sound can be degraded even with the pedal off.

Pedals generally allow you to use a simple on/of function. It won't toggle the actual drive effect of your amp, but if you turn off the pedal, it'll revert to whatever amp sound you normally have.

also, the difference between gain and distortion (i think) is that distortion is a compressed signal. so if you had a really high gain, and you played hard, it would distort. if you played softly, it wouldn't, or if it did it wouldn't be anywhere near as severe.

with distortion the signal is (probably) compressed as it goes in, and boosted up to the point where it will always distort no matter how hard you play.

so gain would be good for van halen type stuff, and distortion for like nirvana or whatever.

Seriously, coolest person ever.

Gain makes the wave bigger.

Distortion changes the wave shape.

Gain can cause the signal's shape to change, but only when you make the wave so big that the peaks start to clip.

Distortion can be applied at any volume level.
