Tony Dungy's Son Found Dead

(Source: Yahoo!) TAMPA, Fla. - James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead in a Tampa-area apartment, police said Thursday.

No foul play is suspected, but a cause of death won't announced pending an autopsy, said Vida Morgan, a secretary in the Hillsborough County sheriff's office.

James Dungy's girlfriend found him when she returned to the Campus Lodge Apartments in Lutz, Fla., the sheriff's office said in a news release on its Web site. Police responded at 1:32 a.m. Thursday and performed CPR on Dungy before he was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa, according to NFL.com. The Colts (13-1) are at Seattle on Saturday; Indianapolis lost its first game Sunday against the visiting San Diego Chargers, ending what had been a perfect season.

The coach and his wife, Lauren, have four other children: daughters Tiara and Jade and sons Eric and Jordan. James, their second-oldest child, was taking extension classes at the University of South Florida, Morgan said.

James Dungy spent his senior year at North Central High School in Indianapolis and graduated this year. C.E. Quandt, the school's principal, said Dungy was a personable student who never flaunted his father's position.

"He just came in and tried to blend in and be a student," Quandt said. "I liked James a lot."

Quandt said Dungy visited North Central a week or two ago to pick up a transcript. He said the death surprised and saddened everyone at the school.

"It kind of diminishes our school family," he said.

James stood 6-foot-7 and was sometimes was mistaken for one of his father's players, The Indianapolis Star reported on its Web site. James and his younger brother, Eric, sometimes watched Colts games from the sidelines, but they had to earn it by doing well in school.

Fans posted prayers and messages of support for Dungy, who also coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a message board on a Colts fan Web site.

"Not only was he a great football coach for the Bucs, but he is an even better person," one Tampa Bay fan wrote. "It makes me sick that it happened at this time of year to a person that is so giving and caring."

Holy fuck! When I first glimpsed @ this I thought it said Tony Dungy found dead. But jesus, 3 days from Christmas and something like this. Poor guy. This must be the shittiest week of that man's life. Hope he and his family can stay strong

Crimson 12-22-2005 11:39 AM

Just saw the news conference with Polian. That is a just travesty ,he was only 18...but to lose a son , there's no words to describe,my thoughts and prayers go out to the Dungys.

D Mac 12-22-2005 03:56 PM

Fuck.

mrslackalack 12-22-2005 09:19 PM

My prayers are out for the whole Dungy family.

RP 12-23-2005 03:53 AM

I feel so sad. I dont even know these people and i'm associated by a fan/ coach/player relationship, but knowing how great of man Tony Dungy is. For this to happen in his life, crushes me. He's that great of a person. Games dont even matter. I cant even imagine what's going through his mind right now. Superbowls, Pro bowls, whatever. Tony Dungy doesnt deserve this and i honest to god pray for this man. He's that great of a person. Such a tragedy.

ddpBANG 12-23-2005 03:53 AM

Damn, and only 18.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family

RP 12-23-2005 04:25 AM

I dont know anything so this is pure speculation, but i'm guessing this kids suicide has alot to do with his relationship with his g/f. Again. I know nothing for sure and just pure speculation.

owenbrown 12-23-2005 04:41 AM

I saw this when the Opening topics of Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption on ESPN were devoted to this. Truly a sad thing :'(

Please tell me you read or saw something somewhere that would at least give you a hint at this, otherwise you're just completely making something up. I mean,

But, I think he was so upset over the Colts loss.

Ofcourse I don't beleive what I said, just making a point

Also, on PTI they had a reporter who covers the Colts, he said he thinks Dungy will be back to coach the playoffs and then retire, that Dungy has always said he doesn't want to be an NFL lifer and wants or does work with prison ministries and has another charity or child mentorship type group that he'd like to focus on. The reporter said even though he just signed a new deal, he sees him staying with his 4 other kids and doing non nflwork.

Now, I only ask one question, was any of this "possible" before the death of his son? It just seemed like a lot for this reporter to suggest/assume.

I dunno, I feel for his loss, but seems like when something like this happens everyone makes up things to seem like they know more then they do.

owenbrown 12-23-2005 11:39 AM

Yeah, I think he might have been considering retiring before all this happened(i.e. his son's death and before that the Colts loss to San Diego). But I think now after all this he will end up leading the Colts to the Super Bowl and Vince Lombardi trophy and dedicate the victory to his son and retire from coaching as a champion.

BCWWF 12-24-2005 03:52 AM

This shouldn't be a national issue. It's tragic for the Dungy family obviously, but they don't need to be discussing it on NFL Live. Give him the 30 seconds he deserves for being a famous coaches son and let them be.

How bout you take it to PM's if you really have a problem. This really isnt the place. I know what you're trying to do. Everyone knows what you're trying to do. Its just not gunna happen.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Dungy family and everyone else who's lost a loved one to suicide.

I really wish you'd tell me what I'm "trying to do", if you think I'm trying to bait you into having another spaz-out I'm not.

I asked you if you had any info about the GF or if it was just a wild guess, I haven't read/listened a lot about the death, hence why I thought you might have info (since you live there and are a fan) that I haven't heard/read.

If not, then yes, I am pointint out that you're just making a "wild guess" the same thing that all the wrestling "fans" flipped out about after Eddie G died and people said "must have been __________" before anyone anyone had any info.

In either case, I'm not trying to start any arguments but you can take it however you want.

did you figure out what you were talking about yet? or just felt like trying to ruin a thread?

ddpBANG 12-24-2005 08:12 AM

Actually, I think you were trying to ruin it. Don't bring outside stuff into this kind of thread. I know you and Rectal have problems, but this thread is about somebody's death. Don't disrespect the dead. That's all I have to say.

Ok, could you PLEASE EXPLAIN what outside stuff I'm bringing into this and how I'm "disrespecting the dead"?

Seriously, he said he thought it had something to do with his GF, I just asked if he knew something or was making this up and he started this whole "you win, I don't want to argue".

I wasn't arguing anything, as you can see where I broke it down and explained it to him.

So, again, still don't know what you're talking about.

Also, since you seem to care, I have no problems with RP, we disagree on most things with sports, but that doesn't mean I have a "problem with him", you on the otherhand, making a stupid comment and have no clue what you're talking about and trying to "start something" and then try and make it look like that's what I was doing, that I'd have a problem with... except for the fact I still have no clue who you and and really, don't care... so yeah, what you have to say doesn't matter much to me. but thanks anyways!

RP 12-24-2005 02:01 PM

It was speculation on my behalf. No one said anything about it. Just me. I say that because i've had a friend kill himself for that very reason. Thats why i tossed it out there as speculation.

Also, I've read somewhere ( and i'll post a link after christmas cause i'm working almost 24 hours over christmas) that this wasnt the first time he attempted suicide.

thank you, I was trying to start a bitchfest with you, that's all I was asking. Also, while it is pure speculation on you're behalf you gave some valid reasons to suspect that, which was all I was asking, cause you're not the type to just post "I think this, because I think this" while we normally disagree on stuff, you usually have a reason for your opinion.

BCWWF 12-24-2005 04:48 PM

Is Rectal this upset over the death of a football coaches son, or did I miss something?

The Outlaw 12-24-2005 07:24 PM

I am guessing he just feels for the family? I don't really see how that is rare, I mean I always feel pretty bummed when someone dies.

Also, the whole story sounded a little fishy to me anyway. Guess we will just have to wait till the autopsy is performed.

Joey Slugs 12-24-2005 10:41 PM

VEL, you do know that the kid killed himself right?

Ok, again, what is your point is what I'm asking, what "truth" are you stating? Did I misstype somewhere and say murder? Did I say somewhere that he didn't kill himself? is their something I'm missing here? please explain.

Supreme Olajuwon 12-30-2005 08:20 PM

I'm sorry but people are making far too big a deal over this. Quentin Richardson's brother was murdered earlier this month and you barely heard about that but apparently this kid who 95% of America doesn't know deserves a huge deal for offing himself just like thousands of teenagers each year. It sucks but that's life.

VonErich Lives 12-31-2005 12:13 AM

while that is true, it's like anything else, until it happens to someone famous it doesn't get attention.

Arthur Ash and Magic Johnson for the first two examples that come to mind.

This is about what i feel like. No disrespect to Tony Dungy and his family, but people die every day. Probably noone here knows him or his family on a personal level, so why does it bother people? Maybe its just me, i feel sorry for people when they lose i family member, because i've gone through it to. I just don't understand why people get so emotional over someone they don't know. Again, i'm not being disrespectful to the dead, or any of you guys/gals emotions, I'm just trying to understand what makes people feel that way about someone they don't even know. Death is a part of life and people die everyday. Does anyone cry when Joe Smoe dies in California (just an example), probably not, so why is it any different when its Tony Dungy's son? None of us 'know' him. Is it because he's in the 'spotlight'?

Replace Tony Dungy w/ "Eddie G." and post that on the wrestling board...

and be very careful opening any ticking e-mail after :D

I felt more bad for Eddie's family than i did for him. I can honestly say, that i miss him for what he did in the ring, but that is it. I mean, i'm one of the biggest Bret Hart marks out there, but i wouldn't cry or be upset if he died tomorrow. I know it's a touchy subject and everyone deals with things differently, i just can't understand how people get so emotional over someone they don't even know.:?:
