MATT HUGHES vs. ROYCE GRACIE

In May...

IT'S ON

Crimson 01-16-2006 10:50 PM

Wow, I was shocked when they introduced him. Sorry to say though much how Franklin beat Shamrock, I think Hughes will destroy Gracie..too bad we can't go back in time and bring in the young Gracie.

RP 01-16-2006 11:09 PM

Well... That has my attention.

Royce Gracie may be old, but he might have been one of the greatest submission artest ever in fighting period. Thats a truely interesting fight. Hughes has a few pounds on him doesnt he?

Hughes fights usually at 170, I think Gracie fought usually around 130-140, I'm probably off.

He looks a little bigger, maybe 155 now.

Crimson 01-16-2006 11:22 PM

I'm old school i'll be rooting for Gracie.

Ol Dirty Dastard 01-16-2006 11:23 PM

How about the TUF fighters tonight. All stopped their opponents in the first round pretty damned easily.

McLegend 01-16-2006 11:25 PM

Damn a 11 seconds

AareDub 01-17-2006 01:10 AM

The official time on it was 11 seconds, but I can't for the life of me find out where the hell all 11 seconds are. Being as generous with time as possible I can only get about 8-9 secs.

Anyway, Hughes/Gracie should be interesting. I'm not expecting it to be quite as bad as Franklin/Shamrock, but I do expect Hughes to win without too much trouble (unless he gets hit in the nuts again :shifty: )

punt 01-20-2006 04:06 PM

I am hoping for it to be a good fight, though I think Hughes will walk through pretty easily.

Gracie usually fights at about 190lbs. He is naturally bigger than Hughes. Gracie is a very good submission fighter on his back and that is a position where Hughes has been submitted in before. I still like Hughes though. I think his stand up is too strong and his wrestling is obviously in another league.

So, what's brining these guys back?

Was it Coture beating Tito Ortiz?

Is it the UFC is making more money now and these guys can come back and have 1 or 2 big paydays which will make retirement easier?

What's the motivation?

Given, Gracie is only 39 (Coture is 41 or 42?), how long has he been retired?

Think it's a safe bet Severn doesn't come back at 47? :)

Wait, just read Ortiz & Shamrock are coach's for TUF season 3... that should be interesting. 2 coach's that aren't in a love fest with each other. Can't wait....

Rob 01-22-2006 07:57 PM

What's bringing these guys back is a combination of money and exposure. Some guys made more money before but they never had anywhere near the level of exposure and other oppotunities to make more money elsewhere.

Royce Gracie hasn't retired. He just fought on New Years Eve on the K-1 show.

TUF3 = :drool:

Innovator 01-23-2006 05:36 PM

Thanks for the correction Rob

Yeah Gracie has limited himself to only 1 or 2 fights per year, usually in K-1 or in other overseas promotions. I'm gonna take Hughes too, just because he can stand up and ground and pound against Gracie. But who knows, Gracie can surpise everyone.

Joyrider 02-03-2006 12:28 PM

The way Hughes is going, he should be a bigger legend than Gracie at 39.

I Think his MMA is already like 40-4-0, and he is in the best shape of his life.

Hughes has beaten guys like Hayato MachSakurai and Carlos Newton twice, not forgeting he has been around since UFC 22.

I would like to see Hughes v Penn 2 soon.

Also on a side note, can't wait for Coutoure v Liddell, but the undercard Isn't all that, looking forward to seeing what kind of shape Frank Mirr is in, cause Alovski is fucking good, and Keith Jardine V Mike Whitehead could be good.

Rob 02-03-2006 02:32 PM

I think Mir could be in trouble on Sunday. His style is BJJ and he is fighting a world champion Brazilian Ju-Jitsu fighter and Mir has already shown that he folds like origami under pressure from strong fighters e.g. Ian Freeman.

Agreed..

I'm getting the PPV on Sat.. Who do yall think will take the Liddell/Couture rubberneck match??

The CyNick 02-03-2006 05:14 PM

To me its a pick em fight. I'm leaning towards Liddell, but I wouldn't be shocked if Randy won.

Rob 02-04-2006 11:55 AM

I want Randy but I can't see Chuck losing.

Crimson 02-04-2006 02:16 PM

I'll predict Chuck wins, along with the Seahawks.

Rob 02-04-2006 07:40 PM

I like the Seahawks too.
