Possible TV Issues for SmackDown?

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...4266598&EDATE=

Apparently WB and UPN are going to merge into one network, known as CW, this fall. I make it a point not to watch the WB, so I have no idea what they show on Thursdays/Fridays, but this could potentially affect the contract for SmackDown. Where could you see this going, storyline or network wise?

Kane Knight 01-24-2006 02:37 PM

We might see a black Champion?

That doesn't surprise me, I work at a TV station that is a WB AND UPN affiliate, so it makes sense to me. I Doubt that they will let go of there best show Smackdown!

Corkscrewed 01-24-2006 03:02 PM

Isn't SD's contract with the network over by then? If they move to, say, USA, it won't be a problem.

If they stay, then they'll negotiate a new deal with this CW.

CharismaInjection 01-24-2006 03:03 PM

Smackdown has been given UPN it's best ratings ever for a Friday Night, they'd be fools not to keep SD on.

Savio 01-24-2006 03:09 PM

I always confuse the 2 next works anyway.

They gave them their best ratings on Thursday, and it would have been foolish to move to Fridays, risking ratings damage.

They did it anyway.

Xero 01-24-2006 03:36 PM

So, when are they going to hire CW Anderson to play a guy from the network?

6to1 01-24-2006 06:06 PM

whats funny is the wb was part of the tbs company i see a good storyline at wrestlmania when vince and hbk are out there in the ring, bischoff ted turner and bret come out and beat the crap out of vince and hbk and say they are taking over smackdown.

I'm starting the "BRING BACK WRESTLING TO CHANNEL 5" campaign.

Who is with me?

The One 01-24-2006 07:15 PM

Uhhhh...before I devote my heart and soul into your futile campaign, just for my own knowledge, channel 5 would be; what exactly?

Y3J 01-24-2006 07:17 PM

A UK terrestial channel that used to show WCW, before it collapsed.

JT 01-24-2006 08:49 PM

My Idea: Cancel Smackdown...create new boom in the market.

You ask,"How could this help?" Well it's simple. You cancel Smackdown, you then combine the rosters back together, creating a new roster with some great WWE talent, and then WWE can cut some people loose. Now with this flood of wrestlers entering the job market, you now have people who can join TNA, or the new MTV promotion which could really use some talent (because Sean Waltman is not). With 3 promotions out there, one of them being a stronger WWE, there could be a possible rejuvination of the wrestling market.

Channel 5 is a british terrestrial that carried WCW Worldwide in WCW's dying days, and played it at 6:00pm on a Friday evening, meaning whenever a weapon shot was used, a big Batman style WHACK! or CRASH! appeared onscreen. (Not sure if that was done by WCW or Channel 5.)

Anyway, it was the last thing of WCW I ever watched, as I made a decision to never watch it again after I saw a steel cage match between Sting (I think) and Vince Russo.

Mike the Metal Ed 01-24-2006 09:11 PM

Oh, and five's (as it's now known) sport coverage is pretty bad. I only watch it for the NHL, so I'd dread another wrestling show going on there. If we were to campaign for WWE to put all its shows on TWC however...

First thing is first, if the WWE stays with this CW thing (which I think is complete bullshit. UPN has been kicking the WB's ass lately in the ratings), then it's likely that it will get less exposure because not alot of affiliates even KNOW of this changeover yet (it's reported that the WWE was not even made AWARE that it was even considered, let alone put into action). I don't think the WWE would want that, regardless of how the ratings are. And if you think UPN's run by a bunch of tightwads NOW, imagine throwing the WB's crew in there WITH them. WWE won't let them get away with SHIT! Not good.

But at the same time, I think SmackDown has been known always as the show that brought wrestling back to network TV, and I think they would want to keep it that way, so I'm not sure if they would want to change it by moving it to USA, either.

But their deal with USA does offer them a chance at a key network: NBC, which could in fact use them on Fridays. For one, NBC Universal, in case you weren't aware, DOES own USA. NBC has been VERY friendly, I think, towards WWE (SNME specials are coming, AFAIK), and NBC is known for doing some riske stuff lately (if they can get away cleanly with Fear Factor, then the WWE won't be a problem). And what they hell are they gonna SHOW on Friday nights, anyway.

The show could be live at that point, which could really help ratings, and NBC has a TON of affiliates (I don't think there is anyplace in the US right now that can't get NBC in some form).

All that is stopping the WWE from that kind of move is that the suggestion hasn't been brought up yet. I think they might be as we speak, but nothing has been said just yet. If someone over there is reading this board, maybe now's the time to think about it.

Yes, as far as I know their contract with UPN is supposed to end this fall.

Kane Knight 01-25-2006 09:51 AM

I don't know that USA would want a second WWE show. People make this sound so eay, but let's face it. IT ain't.

Xero 01-25-2006 10:59 AM

I've heard rumors of making SNME the second show...

Y3J 01-25-2006 05:44 PM

...stop making up rumours.

Shadow 01-25-2006 05:53 PM

From what I read in the Washington Post today, it seems like Smackdown's gonna be on CW.

But don't take my word as gospel.

McLegend 01-25-2006 05:56 PM

According to a blurb in today's Variety, Smackdown and CBS Television (half owners of The CW) have agreed to a two-year extension of Friday Night Smackdown for The CW, meaning the show will remain on the air through September 2008. A lot of people can breathe a whole lot easier today.

btw I got this from ChrisMurray from the BTR boards.

Yeah, hardly anyone can get Channel 5 if you don't have digital. IMO, Channel 5 sucks and the only good thing they show is World's Wildest Police Videos/World's Scariest Police Chases and they're usually repeats.

At night the only thing Channel 5 show is American Sport and I'm pretty sure they use to show Porn movies and programs.

Yeah, but my worry is what is going to happen to the local affiliates. Will we be getting the "CWN" (as I like to call it) in the smaller markets.

Will I be able to watch SmackDown in, say, Wheeling, WV after this September? :shifty:

Jalapeņo 01-26-2006 04:03 PM

Black people on the WB?
