Introduce me to your favourite shows

Everybody has that show that they love but nobody else has ever heard of. So tell me what that show is for you and why Wee Gooner should love it

loopydate 01-28-2006 02:02 PM

I wouldn't say "nobody" has heard of it, but since it lasted only two years, it's clear "nobody" was watching it.

Sports Night

You should watch it because:

The dialogue was fantastic (written by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote the first three seasons of "The West Wing" as well as "A Few Good Men," "Malice," and "The American President").

It had a phenomenal cast (Peter Krause, Josh Charles, Felicity Huffman, Sabrina Lloyd, Josh Malina, and Robert Guillaume).

It had the unique ability to switch back and forth between high drama and extremely light comedy (often in the space of one scene).

I have a bunch but the one nobody ever seems to recognise is The Larry Sanders Show. Think The Office, but set on a late night show a la Letterman instead of an office. In fact stuff like The Office would not exist today if it wasn't for Larry Sanders' influence, it was way ahead of its time.

Cast includes Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor (who you will know from Arrested Development), Rip Torn, Penny Johnson Jerald (sp? Palmer's wife from 24), Jeremy Piven and Janeane Garofalo.

Seriously, I cannot underline enough how ahead of its time and influential this show has proven to be over time. Some of the material has dated because it was written around stuff happening at the time, but a lot of it is just classic.

I used to love that show, my sister was a guest star on it once. She was Larry's assistant or something.

Blitz 01-28-2006 02:37 PM

There was a great series on Showtime a couple of years ago called Out Of Order. It was a fairly standard plot about a troubled family, but it was so well acted, so well written, I just loved it. Starred Eric Stoltz, Felicity Huffman, Kim Dickens, and William H Macy. It only lasted 6 episodes, unfortunately.

RoXer 01-28-2006 03:38 PM

I like Arrested Development, Lost, Earl, The Office, and Simpsons, Wee Gooner.

Mr. Monday Morning 01-28-2006 04:19 PM

How are any of those shows that nobody has heard of

Triple A 01-28-2006 04:55 PM

Most people probably have heard of most of these, but if you have not seen the following shows, download or rent the DVDs now:

Da Ali G Show
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
The Critic
Curb Your Enthusiasm
OZ
Sealab 2021
Stella
Tales From The Crypt

Tilt

Its a poker drama tv show. About 3 people a female and two males who get hustled in poker at some point in there lives by The Matador Don Everest( played by Michael Madsen ). It also stars the guy who stars in Invastion and starred in The Cave. The setting is obviously Las Vegas. They intend to bust him at the WSOP for alot of money , but things dont go as planned and so theres like 12 episodes. Its very good. I hope they have a season 2. Probably my favorite series last year.

The Miz 01-28-2006 05:13 PM

Home Movies doesn't get as much press as the other adult swim shows but I think its my favorite

Triple A 01-28-2006 05:14 PM

Yeah my brother keeps telling me how Home Movies is the most hilarious show on Adult Swim. I have only seen like one episode back in the day and don't remember it. I gotta watch that shit.

The Mask 01-28-2006 05:23 PM

all americans need to download brass eye, the day today and bottom

UmbrellaCorporation 01-28-2006 05:37 PM

I'm sure everyone and their brother knows about it, but ER is always great.

And on a more obscure level (or not, depending on who you talk to), House M.D.

House is THE BEST medical drama I've ever seen, plus it has Hugh Laurie.

RBM 01-28-2006 08:25 PM

Upright Citizen's Brigade

BCWWF 01-28-2006 09:44 PM

The four DVD collections that I own and watch are Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, Family Guy, and the West Wing

RP 01-29-2006 03:41 AM

Robot Chicken

What is adult swim

Mr. Monday Morning 01-29-2006 05:37 AM

Like an 'adult' cartoon network. You do get it in Australia somewhere, ask Mitch

Sattire at its best. It be nice for Americans to see that British humour isn't all about Monty Python and Benny Hill chasing bikini-clad girls, although that shit is still funny.

Da Ali G Show

McDoogle 01-30-2006 05:15 PM

The Shield.

Nowhere Man 01-30-2006 05:28 PM

Not sure how well-known most of these are, but here goes anyway:

Blackadder= legendary Brit-com that most folks in the US really haven't heard of (all most of us know is Python and Benny Hill). Rowan Atkinson at his finest.

Spider-Man= the CG animated series MTV did for a little while. It was one of the best superhero shows in a long time (since HBO's version of Spawn and Batman: The Animated Series), but they never really hyped it, and so it fell by the wayside.

Titus= Hysterical sitcom starring Christopher Titus and Zack Ward (who was Scott Farkus in A Christmas Story way back when). Lasted 3 seasons on Fox, then got cancelled. Pretty dark humor for a mainstream comedy.

AlphaBean 01-31-2006 04:30 AM

Fox is nothing but "dark comedy."

Anyway, I can't stress enough how awesome House is. And it has the dryest, most sarcastic humor in any show I've seen in a long time...

Up there with Newsradio, a very underrated comedy that is so underappreciated that it didn't have a DVD until last May, and it was cancelled in 99. They have the entire set of Keen Eddie, all half a season of it, but no NewsRadio for over five years. WTF.

But it's out now. And it's the most hilarious thing ever. Phil Hartman, David Foley, Joe Rogan, Maura Tierney(back when she was hot), Stephen Root, Andy Dick (and he's actually funny -- see the episode after Phil's death, the song he wrote in memory of him  )

I think I am going to go drop the big $$ on that DVD set right now. Right freaking now. BRB.

AlphaBean 01-31-2006 04:33 AM

nvm, only 3 seasons so far on dvd. WTF.

Venture Brothers
Stroker and Hoop
Tom goes to the mayor

HBO:
Rome
Carnivale
Pretty much any of their series really.

Other:
Keeping up Appearances

Don't watch much TV. Just watch adult swim and hbo. Not even WWE anymore, on account of it being terrible.

Honestly, I tried getting into shows like lost and stuff, but after seeing the HBO series' it just seemed so shitty. Havn't seen any of that 24 show though. heard that's more than decent.

Azureus. Maybe they fixed it by now but it definitely wasn't tracking properly

Dunno, someone was re-posting them to another tracker but they only got up to S3x2, if there's any more after that I neeeeeed them :'(

Shameless (although i'm not too sure how it would be percieved by those not in the UK) is a brilliant programme.
