THE DARKNESS

what do our friends across the pond think of the darkness?

do you even know who they are?

The Destroyer 01-30-2004 05:50 AM

They appear to be on the rise in the States as well, since they're getting radio play... although their album's sitting at around #55 on the US album charts, so they're not doing anywhere near as well as they are over here.

I like The Darkness.
Very catchy music, Permission to Land is a top album.

Cactus Sid 01-30-2004 09:48 AM

I didn't like them.... I saw them at Reading and they were fantastic, I got into them a little, now they've been shoved down our throats for the last 6 months I really couldn't give a sh</>it about them

Silent 01-30-2004 10:07 AM

I think they're ok. I got the album off Napster a while back. Some of the songs have good guitar in them.

You consider that's where both of the first 2 Godsmack albums settled (upper 40s...), and how big they were...So it's not that bad. May not be as great as in Europe, but it's pretty good for a non-boy-band act...

I'd like them a boatload better if not for their vocalist. He reminds me of Tim Staffell, if Tim forgot how to sing.

Same here

El Capitano Gatisto 01-30-2004 01:37 PM

The singer is the man. Any interviews I've seen with him, he's been really funny. You think the way he acts in videos and the spandex unitard outfits he wears, he'd act all wacky, but he doesn't. Just a normal guy, comes across as very intelligent.

Besides, his crazy singing is the whole point.

The Duck 01-30-2004 01:38 PM

Me like the Darkness.

Er, no, the bassist is the Scottish guy.

samichna 01-30-2004 04:06 PM

All's I know is that they dress funny, which is :y: in my books.

(P.S. I don't have any books :()

Yeah, if I Believe in a Thing Called Love gets played one more time over here, i'm going to have a seizure.

I think they just released another single too.

They are annoying, IMO. Yet that's what the radio thinks people like these days :'(

The Mask 01-30-2004 07:50 PM

i think they'd be a really generic boring band if it wasn't for his crazy singing.

Kane Knight 01-30-2004 07:50 PM

Enough people do to give them that impression...

I actually think they've learned from Advertising agents.

El Capitano Gatisto 01-30-2004 08:02 PM

The Darkness paid to record their own album, they were a music industry joke, apparently, prior to eventually hitting it big. No one would sign them. The lead singer took a pretty big risk to get the album out and heard.

I'd say they're pretty much a great example of a band making it through their own initiative and hard work, and off the strength of live performances. They were well known as an incredible live band before they gained wider exposure.

They deserve their success, in my opinion. I'd love to see them live too, their shows look amazing.

Some of you people need to lighten up a bit.

Kane Knight 01-30-2004 08:13 PM

My God, they PAID FOR THEIR OWN RECORD?????

That changes everything.

You missed my point. I'm not saying you should like them because of it, I mentioned it because of the aspersion that they became popular because people were told they should like them. They became popular off the back of their own hard work, and thus deserve fully what comes their way. Maybe it's different stateside, but fu</>ck it, I don't see anything wrong with a good band making a name for themselves.

They've also got an album full of good songs, rather than just a couple of catchy singles.

El Capitano Gatisto 01-30-2004 08:18 PM

And by paid for their own album, I don't mean the young band newly signed type of paid, where the record company pays for it and they pay it back. I mean re-mortaging the house type of thing.

Neither do I. But this ain't a thread about one. :p

El Capitano Gatisto 01-30-2004 08:21 PM

There's no accounting for taste, I suppose.
