Spore.

Has anyone seen this game? Its made by Maxis and is due out 4th quarter of this year.

It looks like people could lose years playing this game.

I won't bother trying to explain it as I won't do the game justice, but here's a video regarding the game and what you can do.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...559198&q=spore

This game looks so intense.

DS 03-06-2006 08:02 PM

I was going to post a thread about this but decided not to. The game looks great but for some reason I can see it getting boring after a while. I will definitely purchase it though.

Requiem 03-06-2006 08:05 PM

Yeah, I was thinking of posting a thread on it as well. Didn't want to check if there was anything out about it already... but yeah, I will definitely buy this.

As for it getting boring. I dunno... the first Sims game kept me entertained for a long time. Hell, I could probably pop it in if I found my CDs and it would entertain me once again. I just loved creating things...

I could see this getting boring after a while, but it would always have 'replay' and 'return' value. You could do it a second time, and nothing would be the same depending on the different things you did.

DS 03-06-2006 08:07 PM

Yeah the first Sims was great. But I found myself bored of Sims 2 after a week. I think it would be fun for the first few plays but after I've blown up all these planets and taken a bunch over I think it would just be a snooze fest. I would most likely have to start a whole new race or something. Maybe make them retarded but quick as a mother.

Requiem 03-06-2006 08:15 PM

Yeah, I would seriously have too much fun creating creatures. I'd especially try to create things like from star wars, or from like Futurama.. lol

Also, the building/vehicle editor could keep me entertained for a while too.. populate a new planet and just spend all my time creating sweet things while they live their lives.

Xero 03-06-2006 08:24 PM

Man, I heard about this and I wanted it. Now I've seen part (up to 10 minutes) of the video and I NEED this game. I'm really into these "fucking around is the key" games.

Now the question is, how many phallus creatures will there be?

Also, anyone know if it'll be free to get shit from online? And can you play it offline?

DS 03-06-2006 08:40 PM

It constantly downloads other players planets and creatures and everything they build so there is no fee to get this stuff. And I'm sure they will make it offline as well and just have computer created creatures.

Requiem 03-06-2006 08:46 PM

Will Wright is going to take a lot of shit from those religious fanatics who see it as playing God and such. Which essentially it is.. (in addition to playing God, which isn't much different from current RTS games), is the fact that you'll be evolving a creature from scratch basically. The anti-evolution people are going to be all over this.

DS 03-06-2006 08:50 PM

I don't see it making that huge of an uproar honestly.

Requiem 03-06-2006 08:57 PM

I think judging by his success with Sim City, and then the Sims. I believe people will definitely take notice. I think it will definitely be an instant best seller. If Sims (which has no end goal) can become as popular as it did, I don't see why this won't.

After attracting so much attention, I don't see how those people could ignore it.

DS 03-06-2006 09:14 PM

I was just saying that I don't think there will be anything about religions groups taking it on. I have no doubt this game will be big.

Requiem 03-06-2006 09:18 PM

What I'm saying is that it will get big. Therefore, these religious groups who are so against evolution are going to notice it. People get riled up about lesser things, and video games are definitely a topic that people jump onto anymore. Hell, the thing with GTA was just the start.

DS 03-06-2006 09:22 PM

The thing with GTA is different. Nobodies going to go out and start a series of evolution after playing Spore. Even if something did happen it would be so small that you would have to do an advanced search just to find it.

Requiem 03-06-2006 09:42 PM

I don't think you understand what I'm saying.

-The Video Game industry is a hot topic in the media these past few years. It just gets bigger and bigger.
-Evolution has always been a hot topic for debate.

In April 05, The Sims had shipped over 52 million copies in 17 languages. By that same time, Sims 2 had already sold over 4 million. (That was only 6 months after release)

A company with this magnitude of success is going to draw attention. If it were just some nobody company that came out with Spore, I doubt it would make a ripple in the world. But coming from a company with such world-wide success, it is bound to attract attention.

Even Jack Thompson was targetting Sims 2 for supposed nudity. (complete bull, but he still tried to go with it.. I'm sure you've read the article, or can find it.) If he can target them for something as non-existant and stupid as what he was saying, other groups can target them for their evolution game. It will be an instant multi-million seller, no doubt about it. With that, it's going to attract all kinds of attention. Both wanted and unwanted.

DS 03-06-2006 10:22 PM

I get what you're saying and I'm saying that nobody will bring up the evolution argument.

Requiem 03-06-2006 10:32 PM

Maybe not immediately, but it will happen eventually. Not saying it's going to be as contraversial as the GTA thing, but I'm saying it will happen. My mind won't be changed about it, so whatever. Not like anyone can know for sure until it is released, but considering that's what the game is based around I still think it will become an issue.

Not like anything will be changed about the game, because I really don't think Will Wright cares. But, some people are going to be unhappy.

DS 03-06-2006 10:42 PM

I know what you're saying and I'm not trying to change your mind.

I just don't see what grounds they would bring up against it just because there is a game about evolution. It's not like the GTA situation besides they are both videogames. Just my opinion.

Requiem 03-06-2006 10:52 PM

I'm just saying that the video game world is being the target of this stuff lately. Before, it was movies and music.. then it shifted to movies music and video games, with more and more attention to video games over the past year.

Oooh, I can see it now.

"I bet I can evolve faster than you!!"
"nuh-uh!"

It'll be madness!!

Seriously though, this game is going to rock. Haven't been this excited about a game in a very, very long time. I could see myself getting bored with the endgame planet hopping stuff, but I guess there's nothing to stop me from just starting back over at the beginning. On the other hand, I would like to create a planet that has a wall or mountain range of some sort completely dividing the planet in half. I'll fill each half with a creature who has a tendency to kill the creature on the other side. Then I'll start breaking down the wall, slowly but surely :D

Requiem 03-06-2006 11:26 PM

LOL. I could see that Aare. I would practice different ways to kill off an entire species. Depending on what the other UFO tools are like (he didn't really show many things it could do, but he did say it was sort of the end-game thing for the game.. so you could create your own planets almost by shaping it to however you wanted. So yeah, I could see doing that.. then just letting them war it out. Or, see what crazy predators you could create, and unleash them on a tribal race.

AareDub 03-06-2006 11:57 PM

You could put the really smart predator type on the same planet as the really dumb, but fast, things and watch the hilarity ensue.

Requiem 03-07-2006 12:10 AM

haha, yeah.

Man, just thinking about that makes me want this game more. They said that at the end, you would be able to just revisit the creator for free and create whatever you wanted.. so that gives plenty of options for whatever kind of end-game you want to create yourself.

It would be sweet if you could like throw a planet into a different line of orbit, and make them collide. I would spend so much time trying to get as many planets to collide at the same time as possible.

Destor 03-07-2006 01:28 AM

This looks like loads of fun. I don't get many games for the PC but this is a definite buy.

Requiem 03-07-2006 01:31 AM

I just hope my system will be able to run it. Honestly, it didn't look too graphics intensive.

I posted that after I saw the creature come out of the water. And then it kept going out and out and out and so on. WOW. Gonna be good.

Requiem 03-07-2006 03:28 AM

Yeah, you have to watch the entire thing.

Destor 03-07-2006 03:29 AM

Just that first part was enough for me to be sold. But wow, this game has a lot to offer. Just wow.

Requiem 03-07-2006 03:33 AM

Yeah, the ability to even go back and create a new race again and again.. wooooo.

I like what they're doing with the content too.. how it downloads asynchronously (no idea if I even spelled that right) from other players.

Destor 03-07-2006 03:39 AM

Yeah, that was very cool. The editing system was also highly impresive. But the scope of the game is what has me blown away.

LoDownM 03-07-2006 04:05 AM

Damn, i'm impressed. I'm defiantly getting this. The whole thing about downloading what other people have created into your game, sounds fucking awesome.

Funky Fly 03-07-2006 06:11 AM

I dunno. Seems like it'd be mindless fun for a bit before I got bored.

Destor 03-07-2006 07:14 AM

I don't know about mindless.

How can you get bored with a game that has seemingly infinite possibilities?

Also, the most important thing, you get to play God. How can it get any cooler than that?

You get to play God!!!

There's the main selling point for me.:D

Dorkchop 03-08-2006 12:34 AM

Holly balls. Do you realise how hard it's going to be to stop playing this? Do you realise how many hours upon hour upon hours everyone is going to waste on this?

"Uhh... I can't come into work today."
"Why?"
"Because I've just developed triped speccies."
"What?"

el fregadero 03-10-2006 12:52 AM

Looks pretty magnificent. I would have to get a new computer though so I'm not sure.

Drakul 08-28-2007 12:18 PM

Sorry for 'bumping' a year old topic but I thought it made more sense than creating a whole new one.

I came across some new info about Spore, if you're interested.
The whole article is here: http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Sto...1555.09950.htm but it's a pretty big read so I'll just copy/paste some of the parts I think would be of most interested here.

Quote:

The first thing we walked up to was a similarly lowly creature, and we took the friendly approach—singing a little song, accompanied by a little swaying animation and emanating musical notes. For some reason, our song made quite the impression, and we made a new friend—snagging precious new parts in the process. As you interact with creatures, a meter pops up. Fill it up, and you’ve got a new friend—complete with a smiley-faced icon that will make Sims veterans feel right at home.
Quote:

Now that the creature is a bit smarter that before, its goals are suitably more ambitious. Whereas before the goal was to find a mate and evolve a little more, now it’s all about organizing your creatures and making sure that they’re the dominant lifeform on the planet. How can you do that? By forming tribes, of course. There’s something to be said for having safety in numbers. You can’t just take a few guys and say they’re a tribe, or at least you can’t do that in Spore. Here, you’ll need to get three creature types in your posse (the official Spore term) to form your tribe. You can do it the nice way, by being social, or by intimidating your quarry into submission. It’s up to you.
Quote:

While fish is tasty and all, our creatures yearned for something a little more substantial. After a quick trip to the character editor, our guys were dressed up for the hunt, with special hats, war paint and ornamental shoulder spikes. (Players will be able to design specific outfits and styles for each of the characters main actions, should they be interested in doing so.) Our creatures made good use of their big brains and upgraded weapons, bringing back huge piles of meat.
Quote:

With that, it was time to do some recruiting. We followed a colored blip on the minimap to a rival village. Since we wanted to do our best to impress our new friends, we brought along gifts of meat and fish. They seemed pretty happy about the whole thing, but who wouldn’t? When we tried to recruit them by singing and playing instruments, however, their response was less enthusiastic.
Quote:

You start off by building your town hall or selecting one from a bank of previously created samples. Some of the more outlandish developer designs were shown in the demo, including a building that looked like a pair of enormous Lego blocks. We picked Gandalf Hall, which was appropriately shaped like a towering version of the famous wizard. The next step is designing or selecting a harvester, which is used to gather spices. A similarly crazy selection of developer creations was present, including a Tron-like Light Cycle, skull or gigantic red stapler. (Lawyer-types, take notice—the samples were just examples of what players could themselves create. These are not likely to be in the game’s official release.)
Quote:

Here, past player actions come into play. If you played with lots of aggression in the past, your civilization will likely be a militaristic one, with specialized units designed to destroy enemies and inflict pain. If you were more peaceful, your civilization might be based on commerce, with units designed to create trade routes and woo followers that way. If you take over a civilization of another type, you can then build their specialized units, so you won’t be stuck playing Rambo if you’re really an entrepreneur at heart.

The game is also confirmed for the DS and it's currently being developed. The PC version (and, I think, the DS version aswell) are due out in Spring 2008. They said the Wii, 360 and Ps3 will most likely get a port but not right now.

Xero 08-28-2007 12:34 PM

I cannot wait for this. :y:

KingofOldSchool 08-28-2007 12:37 PM

yeah won't be able to play this until it comes out for the 360 or Wii.

Drakul 08-28-2007 12:39 PM

Forgot this screenshot. Am I the only one that thinks that looks like it's underwater?
Edit: Oh wait, I see smoke, maybe it's not underwater...
http://spore.4players.de/screenshots/medium/1094.jpg

There is also a youtube video which shows creatures without legs. That wasn't in the older version we were shown.

I'm hoping this comes to the Wii intact and not watered down. Surely the Wii can handle it, right? I'm not good on the technical workings of computers and consoles. Do you think it will be doable on the Wii?
