Are video games art?

I don't think they are

DS 05-07-2006 01:03 AM

They are as much as movies are.

Funky Fly 05-07-2006 02:30 AM

My immediate response to this is no, but then when I think back to playing certain games like Ocarina of Time and being blown away by the story and execution, I have to say yes.

Jaded-Dragon 05-07-2006 03:47 AM

They really are no different than movies. Someone has a concept, they sell their idea, a director takes over and uses a team to bring his visualization to the world. There are producers, publishers, writers, animators, actors, etc.

The only glaring difference is that games are user interactive and movies are not.

D Mac 05-07-2006 04:05 AM

Yes.

Drakul 05-07-2006 04:12 AM

If a Dyson Vacuum can be art along with a load of splashes of paint on canvas that make no real picture then games can be art. It all depends on the individual.

Art is something thats beautiful and beauty differs from person to person.

Kane Knight 05-07-2006 09:33 AM

Remember those old art/pornography debates?

I think that some games are very much art, while most are not.

Savio 05-07-2006 01:16 PM

Yeah I don't think they are but I don't really have a good arguement for it.

Sadistic 05-07-2006 01:35 PM

I say Yes.

Extreme Angle 05-07-2006 03:29 PM

Yes, but only some.

Hired Hitman 05-07-2006 08:26 PM

everything is artwork in one shape or another, Video games are the expression of their creators, which is just what Painting, Photos and Film are, so I don't see why Video Games can't be classed as art.

ClockShot 05-07-2006 08:37 PM

Hideo Kojima had a big discussion about this topic a few volumes back in PS2 magazine. Stating "video games is not art." Or something along those lines. As for the poll, there should be a 50/50 answer cause some games are just great and could be considered art. And some games people ask "where do they come up with this garbage?"

DS 05-07-2006 09:00 PM

Just because something bad, doesn't mean it's not art. There are plenty of horrible movies, paintings, pictures, songs, etc that are just horrible but they are still considered art. If one game is considered a work of art then they all should be.

Yeah, this isn't really a black and white question.

...And yet, not all compositions and drawings and pictures are considered art.

DS 05-07-2006 09:40 PM

I would beg to differ, personally, but I can understand what you mean.

el fregadero 05-07-2006 09:43 PM

Just the fact that the most asked question about art is "What is Art?" Indicates that there is some sort of art/not paradigm out there.

Similarly, some photos are to capture a memory or image, some are artistic expression. There are snap shots, and then there's photography. there's cinema and there's porn. There's all sorts of paradigms between art (Which is an element of expression) and everything else.

In fairness, Yahtzee isn't a board game really. No board anyway.

Kane Knight 05-08-2006 11:02 AM

In fairness, I have never played Yatzhee

I agree that it can go a variety of ways. Looking at a game like Robotron, Guitar Hero, Wrestling Gmae or Pacman I would probably argue they are not really art. But looking at certain games like Ocarani of Time which was mentioned, or Wind Wanker, God of War, and other games that involve more of a story a stronger case could be argued. What I am mainly thinking of are cut scenes in videogames. To me there is a difference in a cut scene from a wrestling game to one in God of War.
I took a class dealing with the economics of arts. One thing we spent a lot of time on is what could be considered art. In theory all videogames could be art in some way. It really depends on what you think as an individual. There really is no set rules for what makes something art. I mean I'm looking at some of my action figures now. I display some like my AVP or X-Men ones, while others like my wrestling ones are currently tossed in a drawer. one could argue a case these are an art form. Just because an item isn't unique as an oil painting doesn't mean it's a form of art.
In conclusion thinking about it more, I'd say video games are an art form. I think a lot of video games are used as an outlet to express oneself.

Requiem 05-08-2006 04:14 PM

Video Games are a collaboration of art making up a finished product. They are not art in the traditional sense. Video Games usually have a story, which in itself is a work of art, and of course the graphic art, is just that... art. Now, molding something together with all of these things is a form of art itself. OoT for instance. Back then, those graphics were awesome, and it melded with the story so perfectly.

Dorkchop 05-08-2006 05:57 PM

Yes. Burger Time is art.
