Super Mario 2

Can't remember for the life of me the story behind why they turned Doki Doki Panic into Super Mario 2 in the states instead of giving the real SMB2 a run?

Kane Knight 05-19-2006 06:22 PM

That was intended to be a question. The phone rang and I got distracted.

G 05-19-2006 06:29 PM

Wait, so what is the real SMB2? The Lost Levels?

Xero 05-19-2006 06:31 PM

I've heard they pulled the original Mario 2, (which was released twice in the US, once in All Stars as The Lost Levels and once for the Gameboy re-release of Mario 1, although they were both cut down) because they thought it would be "too hard".

They called our Mario 2 "Super Mario USA" in Japan.

G 05-19-2006 06:41 PM

So why not just tone down the difficulty factor and release it, instead of giving that shit job of DDP to us. Although I was too young to care at the time, I bet when it first came out a lot of people were very disappointed with hopes of a real SMB2

Jonster 05-19-2006 07:53 PM

Because it's quicker to change the graphics than to change the levels.

Come on guys, Doki Doki Panic led to the greatest Mario characters ever: the shy guys.

Xero 05-19-2006 08:33 PM

While I was playing the New Super Mario Brothers game for DS, I kept thinking that Fry Guy should have been a boss.

He was so fucking cool.

On a Shy Guy note, everyone (should) know that Mario 2 was actually Mario's dream.

Go forward to Yoshi's Island, and the Shy Guy is basically the Goomba of Yoshi's Island (and 2). Since that was Mario's back/baby story, it explained why Mario dreamed about Shy Guys, thus allowing them to bring them into all Mario games.

(Scary that I know things like that, isn't it?)

And the greatest debate ever--What the fuck is Birdo!

:shifty:

The game wasn't bad, it just wasn't the real sequel we expected.

Xero 05-19-2006 09:16 PM

Birdo's Asexual.

It lays eggs, but looks more like a male. But also has a bow.

Maybe the entire species has gender issues.

Birdo's an asexual transgender.

It lays eggs asexually, looks like a dude, but wears a bow.

Kane Knight 05-19-2006 11:02 PM

If you don't have a gender or sex, how can you really be transgender?

Xero 05-20-2006 12:02 AM

I'll go ask Shannon that and get back to you.

TerranRich 05-20-2006 02:21 AM

To clarify, yes, "The Lost Levels" was SMB2 in Japan, and SMB2 here was original Doki Doki Panic in Japan, our version being released as SMB USA

Boondock Saint 05-21-2006 04:49 AM

So was Mario in this "Doki Doki Panic" thing? Or was it totally different and he/the others were just placed in it for the US?

Oh, and Mouser = ratings

They created the Mario version by changing the original characters.

Xero 05-21-2006 11:35 AM

They also changed around some of the other graphics.

Was Doki Doki Panic ever released in Japan?

I think I heard something about it really being a promotion for a movie or something...

Kane Knight 05-21-2006 03:05 PM

Well ya, I was just saying it didn't have Mario in it (as per the question). It wasn't a Mario game, they just changed it into one by making the main character Mario. Etc.

DDP was released in Japan, yes. I don't know how well received tho.

Xero 05-21-2006 06:55 PM

They should have changed it to Doki Doki AYALLAYALAAA!

It would have been a smash it!

Yeah, and when they ported it to the US, the main character could insist "I am an Itallian American." and rant about how he is judged on his looks and not his jumping ability.

Pffft. I've GMéd. Still nowhere near Kalyx's "let's live life as though it were a comic book" level of fanboydomism.
