there arent really any U2 songs that sound like their new stuff I think.

Just get How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb, it's a good album.

They are kinda different songs.

For a basic list of good U2 stuff I'd suggest get everything off the best of 1980-90, plus:
One (Achtung Baby)
Everlasting Love (The B Sides)
Mysterious Ways (Achtung Baby)
Elevation (All That You Can't Leave Behind)
Walk On (All That You Can't Leave Behind)
City of Blinding Lights (How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb)
A Man And A Woman (How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb)

I could probably name a hundred more. Wasn't a huge fan of their 90s stuff, except a few tracks of AB.

I say just get the whole discography.

Seriously though. Pretty much both their Best of albums have that sort of style.
Sweetest Thing and Pride (In the Name of Love) are recommendable and pretty much what Kidd Rob said.
