ECW wrestlers

Regarding all the guys that worked hard for ECW, are they still walking? I mean, 5 years or so has past since ECW died. I'm thinking, a lot of the guys that worked there are that much older and probably pretty beat up from all the hardcore wrestling they've been through. When ECW comes back, and all the old guys are back there, are we going to watch really shitty wrestling because these guys are broken down? For instance look at the Sandman, back in the day he wasn't exactly in good shape, and at ONS last year he looked pretty sloppy because it looked like his body was the shits. Another example is Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer. Their match is going to be brutal to watch unless Foley and Edge can carry it. Dreamer and Funk can hardly move it seems like. I'm really worried about how crappy this ECW is going to be due to the "names" from ECW either not working there, or beat up too much.

loopydate 06-02-2006 03:50 PM

Yeah, I mean look at Raven and RVD and Rhino and Super Crazy and Little Guido and the Dudleys and Stevie Richards and Benoit and Nova and Psicosis and Misterio (if we're talking ECW, I'll use his ECW spelling)! Those guys can barely even walk!

Mr. Aristocrat 06-02-2006 03:52 PM

Actually Raven isn't quite the mover he used to be, though that probably has more to do with the drugs/weight gain.

loopydate 06-02-2006 03:54 PM

True, but I wouldn't consider recent Raven matches to be "shitty," "broken-down," or "brutal to watch."

Mr. Aristocrat 06-02-2006 04:02 PM

Point well taken. He does still have the ability to entertain like a motha fucka. It's a damn shame TNA doesn't allow him to be unleashed, honestly if you would have talked to me in the mid to late 90s I would have said Raven had the potential to go down as one of the best characters of all time, hell I still think that's true, but they need to allow him to be that twisted loner bastard again. I hope they begin to treat him right after his shit with Zybisko is over.

Yeah saying all the ECW guys are broken down is just stupid. Funk has barley been able to move for over a decade, his entire time with ECW you thought he was one bad bump away from just falling apart, and while Dreamer may be a bit slugish, I still think he will be able to do his thing. I personally worry about Taz, I am not sure how well of ring shape he will be in having spent the past few years getting comfortable as an announcer.

loopydate 06-02-2006 04:08 PM

Yeah, Taz is the one I'm most worried about. Funk has been pretty sloppy for the last decade or so, but he's in there with Edge, who has proved recently that he's more than capable of performing very well in hardcore matches; Foley, who - despite being overweight and much slower than his prime - is still one of the best ring "psychologists" in the business; and Dreamer who was never a top-tier wrestler, but could milk the last ounce of psychology out of a match. Those three can carry Funk to a good match.

Taz, on the other hand, has been effectively retired for about half a decade now. And let's not forget that it was a series of serious injuries that forced him to do so to begin with. Now, I imagine he's probably been training over the last several months in preparation for this, but training and being in front of an ECW crowd are two entirely different things.

I still think he'll put on a good show, but if there's anybody I'm worried about not coming out of ONS in good shape, it's him.

Innovator 06-02-2006 04:48 PM

Raven bumps around more now than he did in ECW, at least he's back from that thyroid thing and can start losing that weight he put on. He is said to be in really high spirits since coming back, feeling refreshed...well at least he feels that way until he has to fight Zbysko.

NeanderCarl 06-02-2006 10:33 PM

I haven't seen any announcements that Tazz (or Taz) will be wrestling any time in the future. If he does have a presence in ECW, which I assume he will, I'd guess it would be in a commentary or manager role.

His neck is allegedly fucked.

Londoner 06-02-2006 10:53 PM

^^ I thought Taz was taking on Lawler at ONS?

Has this been announced? Or is this just assumed because of Lawler's comments on Raw?

Londoner 06-02-2006 11:13 PM

I thought I read in a thread on this forum that it was announced on Smackdown.

Innovator 06-02-2006 11:24 PM

That it was

Innovator 06-02-2006 11:24 PM

Well Taz(z) called Lawler out for ONS at least

Blitz 06-02-2006 11:44 PM

Yeah, I don't think it'll be an actual match. Tazz'll prolly just suplex Lawler and choke him out.

Innovator 06-02-2006 11:50 PM

Tazmission Tazplex....mmmm

NeanderCarl 06-03-2006 12:13 AM

From WWE.com.....

Prior to the main event, SmackDown announcer and former ECW standout Tazz made a big time challenge to RAW commentator Jerry Lawler. Sick of the constant jabs from Lawler at both himself and the ECW legacy, the Brooklyn native challenged the King to a match at ECW’s One Night Stand. “I got one left in me Lawler. With God as my witness, I guarantee that I will choke your ass out at One Night Stand. Because I am Tazz, beat me if you can old man, survive if I let you.”

I guess that's official, then.

Afterlife 06-03-2006 01:02 AM

Lawler needs to stop getting into ppvs he has no business with...but I"m interested, regardless.

I think he has plenty of business with this PPV. It could be argued that it was Lawler's invasion that took ECW from being a small time promotion to a national promotion.

Afterlife 06-03-2006 10:18 AM

Well, my take was that he's once again taking a spot away from the young and/or current active talent, an undertaking that he employs much to my chagrin.

But how did he assist ECW, pray tell? I'm very much unaware of ECW's history.

domononizuka 06-03-2006 10:49 AM

Dreamer just teamed with CM Punk out here in OVW.He looked like hes still in good shape, and put on a decent match.I dont know about the other guys though.

James Steele 06-03-2006 02:36 PM

Terry Funk can still steal the show any night he damn well pleases.

I assume you are aware of when ECW invaded Monday Night RAW? Well after that Lawler began to really bash ECW every week on WWE television. You see Vince and Paul had worked out an agrement about helping ECW get over on a national scale since their first PPV Barely Legal was almost upon us. Anyway after weeks of ECW bashing, and after ECW had invaded WWE television, and once Barely Legal was done and over with, Jerry Lawler himself invaded ECW. He had so much heat that he has said he was scared for his life and well being, that fans might try to hurt him.

I have never been sure if Lawler really does hate ECW, because he has never once said anything nice about them, but at the same time Lawler is an old school guy who may just have always kept kayfabe on this. I am not sure. What I am sure of though is that Jerry Lawler made only a handful of appearences, but his time in ECW got him over as one of the all time great heels of purest hatred. The fans literally did want to rip into him. Quite possibly the greatest heel heat I have ever witnessed.

You might seriously want to consider knowing what you're talking about before posting anything else on the subject.

Actually, this is all news to me. I only started really watching WWE a year or so before The Invasion deal With the WCW/ECW Alliance; thus, as I said, I know very little of Lawler's interactions with ECW and the results that followed. And I genuinely thank you for informing me on the subject.

I do, however, maintain my opinion on his sporadic no-point matches at random ppvs. That being said, I do now understand the inclusion of him at this particular event, and it does make me glad to see Taz in action again. In fact, I already that I'm interested in the match, I'm just less than thrilled about a 60 year old retiree working even one match for ECF'nW. The way I see it, the honor of the show lies on the shoulders of the men who actually have the history. This is the same reason I don't like Cena being there -- at least Edge has proven his ability in a hardcore environment. Anyone could have easily riled Taz into a match the way Lawler did.

But, perhaps I just don't know quite enough to suggest such a thing.

OH. MY. GOD.

FUNK WITH THE MASSIVE CORONARY OFF THE TOP!

EXTREME!!!!

i love funk too, but times past to hang it up.

Mister Sinister 06-06-2006 02:45 AM

He'll Retire after this and then come back 4 weeks after...6 months down the road, wash...rinse....repeat.

But regardless, you gotta love a 60 year old man who will do a sloppy Moonsault Press off a ladder if need be.

What Would Kevin Do? 06-06-2006 04:02 AM

Lawler does have business being there... I'm just not thrillled with him and Taz going at it... Unless Tazz dismantles Lawler, I don't want to see it... If I was booking it, and Tazz could do it, I'd have a quick match, with Lawler reversing a back body drop into the piledriver (bad neck though, so I doubt it.)

THen have Tazz pop up, no sell, beat the shit out of Lawler, and choke him out.

Skippord 06-06-2006 04:23 AM

I truly think that Terry Funk will die in a ring

Cuzziebro 06-06-2006 04:57 AM

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Taz v Lawler because of Lawler and his history with ECW and also Taz wrestling again will be a very markish moment.

Cuzziebro 06-06-2006 04:58 AM

As for the Funker he would be better as a Manager but I don't mind him wrestling, he's a good wrestler even if he's getting on.
