Biggest Chokes in Sports.

What are some that you can remember?

The biggest one for me is when the Yankees had Boston down 3-0 in the ALCS (I think it was the ALCS) and Boston won 4 straight to win the series.

Also an NFL game where the Oilers were up 35 - 3 at halftime and Frank Reich let the Bills to overtime and a field goal won it for Buffalo.

Bad Company 06-30-2006 04:29 AM

All Blacks World cup 99 v France in the Semis.

ct2k 06-30-2006 07:18 AM

I think partly with the Yanks in 2004 we choked but tbh you can't underestimate the immense talent and gutsy performances of the Boston team, it was their time and they pulled their fingers out of their collective arse and did the undoable.

Also, John Starks:'(

ct2k 06-30-2006 07:18 AM

And yes it was the ALCS!

The Miz 06-30-2006 07:19 AM

2003 Oakland A's. If Eric Byrnes and Miguel Tejada use little league baserunning fundementals they sweep the ALDS in 3 games.

RoXer 06-30-2006 02:34 PM

Yeah. Also: Terrance Long.

RoXer 06-30-2006 02:35 PM

Hey somebody post a picture of Latrell Sprewell.

BCWWF 06-30-2006 03:22 PM

Gary Anderson missing his first field goal of the year as time expires in the 1998 NFC Championship game, Vikings end up losing.

The Miz 06-30-2006 03:30 PM

Nate Poole

El Fangel 06-30-2006 03:32 PM

this years stanley cup finals

oilers 2 man advantage, and they choke so much they forgot hockey basics, RUSH THE GOALIE FOR CHRIST SAKE, they could have won the gd game had they got a goal instead a f-up

RoXer 06-30-2006 03:36 PM

Damnit Miz, I was going to go look for a Nate Poole picture.

RoXer 06-30-2006 03:36 PM

2001 World Series Game 7

Los Angeles Lakers

The Miz 06-30-2006 03:45 PM

Ken Macha and Terrence Long for the 2003 ALDS. 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, Jermaine Dye up with Chris Singleton on deck in the 9th inning. It was OBVIOUS Lowe would walk Dye to face Singleton but for some reason Macha pinch-hits Adam Melhuse who Lowe wasn't afraid of and struck him out. Then Tina Long K's with the bases loaded 2 ABs later. Disgusting

Gertner 06-30-2006 03:49 PM

Oilers didn't choke because they weren't expected to win.

Scott Norwood missing a 19 yard field goal in the super bowl

Team Sheep 06-30-2006 04:01 PM

The Monday Night Miracle and Super Bowl XXV.

El Fangel 06-30-2006 04:05 PM

For me they were expected to win, they needed 3 games straight and they fought all the way to game seven. :(

Skippord 06-30-2006 04:17 PM

Several Broncos Superbowls

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-30-2006 04:18 PM

lol@ two Red Sox series resulting in choke-jobs

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-30-2006 04:19 PM

Even though guys from the bench where telling Webber to take a timeout, still the biggest chokejob in the history of sports IMO

So if the Steelers ended up losing to the Colts in the playoffs last year after Bettis coughed up a sure win you wouldn't consider that a choke?

I would, they choked at the end of the game, I don't care if they were projected to lose before the game.

Gertner 06-30-2006 05:33 PM

What the oilers did wasn't a choke, because

A) they weren't the over-whelemign favourites
B) they didn't have a big lead
c) they weren't really in a position to win other than game 7 where they got outplayed

McLegend 06-30-2006 05:51 PM

1964 Phillies

Up 6 games with 12 games left, and still managed to fuck it up.

Joey Slugs 06-30-2006 05:58 PM

The biggest choke job in sports begins and ends with the 2004 New York Yankees in the ALCS (especially since they absofuckinglutly destroyed Boston in Game 3).

McDoogle 06-30-2006 06:00 PM

The Spanish soccer team in every single major event.

Perth Glory v Wollongong 2000 Final.

After going into halftime leading 3-0 Glory ended losing on penalties when the Gong scored 3 in the second half. :(

Herschelle Gibbs dropping the World Cup in 1999 and Alan Donald running himself out when SA needed 1 run off 6 balls in the Semi Final.

redoneja 06-30-2006 09:08 PM

BJ Penn choking out Matt Hughes at UFC 46, I believe.

Yeah, definately.

I love how he went back the next year and played the hole just with a putter and got a 6, which would have won it for him too.

Oh well that makes sense but in an earlier post you made it seem like a team which is the underdog cannot choke in a game, which I don't think is entirely true.

mrslackalack 07-01-2006 12:23 AM

I will never forget Maryland losing a 12 pt lead on Duke with 1 minute to go in either 01 or 02 and lost in overtime.

D Mac 07-01-2006 06:36 AM

The Cardinals getting swept by Boston could be a possibitlity, but Boston was on a major high at that time.

Downunder 07-01-2006 08:30 PM

England v Portugal 2006 World Cup

Y2C 07-01-2006 09:37 PM

You can't have a soccer world cup without a pommy choke.

mrslackalack 07-01-2006 11:09 PM

De La Hoya against Trinidad in 1999.
