Negotiations between Saints, Bush agent to heat up

Hard bargaining on a deal for Reggie Bush will begin on Thursday, ESPN.com has learned, as New Orleans Saints officials and agent Joel Segal are scheduled to engage in what almost certainly will be the most substantive negotiations yet on a contract for the second overall choice in the draft.

The negotiating session, expected to be conducted by phone, comes on the day when Saints players are to report to training camp at Millsaps College near Jackson, Miss. The initial practice under first-year coach Sean Payton is on Friday, and it will take a monumental breakthrough in the Thursday bargaining to get the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner onto the field for that workout.

To this point, the two sides have discussed framework and concepts and perhaps even floated some dollar figures, but it is believed the Saints have yet to make a formal offer to the former Southern California star.

Bush is seeking a deal in the range of the six-year, $54 million contract that defensive end Mario Williams, the top overall selection in the draft, received from the Houston Texans. Based on discussions with Saints officials before the draft, those financial expectations may be warranted.

New Orleans would prefer to work off the contract signed by last year's second overall choice, Miami tailback Ronnie Brown, but those numbers aren't apt to sway Bush or his representative.

The Dolphins signed Brown to a five-year, $34 million contract that included about $20 million in guaranteed money.

Compounding the negotiations for the Saints is the fact that Bush, who has embraced the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans and already made several sizeable donations to charities there, has banked $5 million to $7 million in various endorsement contracts negotiated by Mike Ornstein, his marketing agent.

That certainly alleviates the urgency for Bush to sign a contract quickly, since he already has considerable cash flow.

Bush said during the team's rookie minicamp in May that he wanted to be in camp on time and that he had instructed Segal to attempt to accomplish that goal. But only a few days later, Bush clarified his remarks, telling ESPN.com that any contract had to be a sound business decision.

There were reports last week that Bush might consider sitting out the entire 2006 season and re-entering the draft in 2007, but those were regarded as premature. Still, unless there is significant progress achieved quickly in negotiations, Bush's absence from camp could be a protracted one.

I think that's directed my way, and to clarify, my comment was sarcastic in nature. However, I have no idea what New Orleans is like right now, I don't know if the mess has been cleaned up, I've heard the Stadium isn't fixed. Last year they didn't play out of New Orleans, so with the sarcastic overtones, it's a legitimate question.

Boomer 07-28-2006 01:41 PM

Everybody else in the division is gonna be too good for them to go anywhere, but maybe they'll prove me wrong.

Kris P Lettus 07-28-2006 01:51 PM

10-6

RP 07-28-2006 05:42 PM

Yah they better practice there endzone dances in training camp cause they wont get much practice during the season.

RP 07-28-2006 05:42 PM

Actually when does preseason start?

Kris P Lettus 07-31-2006 12:00 AM

Well fellows, I also have sigs, custom status, etc up for betting..

Bring it..

road doggy dogg 07-31-2006 12:14 AM

The Lions have treated me poorly far too many times for me to take that silly bet. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 37 times, shame on me.

DrA 07-31-2006 12:21 AM

I don't know, when Scott Fujita is considered one of your best free agent pick-ups you may be in trouble.

Kris P Lettus 07-31-2006 12:25 AM

He's better than every other LB we've had since Sam Mills, God rest his soul..

I think your original prediction of 10-6 will probably be right

Kris P Lettus 10-16-2006 06:06 PM

I'm now thinking 11-5, maybe 12-4..

Jesus Shuttlesworth 10-16-2006 06:20 PM

I don't know, a win is a win but they haven't really looked that ridiculously impressive in all of their games. Barely speaking out a win againest 0-4 Tampa Bay with their 2nd string QB starting kind of opened so eyes, not to mention the season opener againest Cleveland. Not discrediting the Saints, since like I said a win is a win and they could possibly go 11-5 but I see them finishing up at 10-6. That victory over Atlanta was big, but I don't know that game was just crazy, reopening of the Superdome then the blocked punt for a TD. Saints are definetly a playoff team, but I can't see them winning 12 games.

Kris P Lettus 11-11-2006 12:04 PM

What do you think the Pays record will end up being??

I mean, yall barely squeaked out a win against the Bills week one.. The Bears barely got one against the f'n Cards..

Everyone can have a bad game..

11-5

10-6 at least 11-5 may be tough seeing as good Atlanta and Carolina(barely) are in the NFC South. (Tampa Bay sucks.)

owenbrown 11-11-2006 12:34 PM

Then judging by the remaining schedule I could be wrong.... might be 9-7...

11/12(Tomorrow) at Pittsburgh
11/19 Cincinnati *?
11/26 at Atlanta * (gonna be a close game, IMHO, dome vs dome)
12/3 San Francisco
12/10 at Dallas *?
12/17 Washington
12/24 at N.Y. Giants *
12/31 Carolina *

*-tough games
*?- possible tough games

I don't know what the Patriots have to do with the Saints, but they had ONE bad game againest a bad team. They have handled the rest of them - Patriots 2 loses came againest the Colts and Broncos - probably considered the 2 top teams in football right now so I dunno I think its a little different then the Saints.

Kris P Lettus 11-12-2006 12:12 PM

That you are saying ther Saints "they haven't really looked that ridiculously impressive in all of their games" could also be said of them too..

ATL will play us hard because of the Monday night swacking..

The Steelers and the Bengals are all on how well they play.. Could go either way.. The only other game the worries me is the Giants but with their injuries adding up, I dunno..

I still say 11-5..

Kris P Lettus 12-11-2006 02:17 AM

9-4

Dat's who.

Kris P Lettus 12-13-2006 12:44 PM

Yeah, yall beat us..

Just too bad yall are not gonna make the playoff for a rematch in the Super Bowl..

I mean, even if yall did make the playoffs, I'm sure way too many starters would be in jail to help yall win..

Who Dat??

Supreme Olajuwon 12-13-2006 12:51 PM

so you're claiming right now in front of everyone on TPWW that Saints are going to make the Super Bowl and you're so sure that if they don't you plan to post pictures of yourself in a pretty pink dress? That's bold

Jesus Shuttlesworth 12-13-2006 12:55 PM

lol Its not the Bengals fault they play in a better conference. The top 5 teams in the AFC > every team in the NFC

Kris P Lettus 12-13-2006 02:04 PM

Once again, I don't care that the AFC is better than the NFC.. Just means the Saints have an easier road to get to the Supoer Bowl.. And in the 90's the NFC won the Super Bowl like 13 straight years..

It's cycular..

Supreme Olajuwon 12-13-2006 03:50 PM

Well despite the fact that cycular is not a word, we can't ignore how the Saints have played against teams with bullying defenses (Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Carolina). I'm not saying the Saints are soft, but I am saying it gets awfully cold and windy in Chicago in January and if my team played in a dome and had most of its success through the passing game I'd be slightly hesitant to claim they were Super Bowl bound.

All I said was it isn't the Bengals fault they are in a toucher conference then the Saints. So I really don't care if you don't care
