Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition

Check out Nero on the Official Flash Site (Japanese). Dante takes a backseat to his story, which involves his 'Devil Arm'. Nero will have many abilities similar to Dante's; though his connection (and likeness) to Dante isn't revealed just yet. His Devil Arm will also play a part in his gameplay.

...The story thus far is that Nero and his organization are trying to undo the seal of Sparda, but are stopped by none other than Dante.

All the classic Devil May Cry moves are also planned for the game. Nero can wield two guns and has access to a variety of swords, including the powerful Red Queen. The game will take place after DMC1 and before DMC2. The combo system is based on that of part 3, Itsuno revealed to the magazine, noting that Capcom has been making adjustments by listening to user feedback. There are a few mysterious new systems, including one where your sword has an element of "acceleration" about it, but details will have to wait until a certain late-September game show.

The new kid on the block. A third Son of Sparda? Virgil reborn from the Demon World?

I'm pretty excited about this one. The director of DMC3's kick-ass action cutscenes (Versus action director, Yuji Shimomura) will return to add his sense of badass in DMC4. It isn't known if Shawn Mcpherson, who did some of the rockin music for DMC3, will be on board for this game. The big buzz-killer is the game being exclusive for a console I may not buy for another two years down the road.

Dave Youell 09-08-2006 02:49 AM

This game is basically one of the main drivers for me getting a PS3.

Nero = Virgil?

But if that is the case, I could of sworn he was killed in DC1, obviously he was still alive at the end of 3. So wouldn't it make more sense if this was a sequal to 3, but a prequal to 1?

Kalyx triaD 09-08-2006 11:55 AM

Let's review:

Dante and Virgil battle in DMC3. Virgil loses, stays in the Demon World and fights Mundus for "fun". He loses, and becomes Nelo Angelo, Mundus' top soldier.

DMC1 finds Dante fighting Nelo and learning that it's indeed Virgil, twisted by Mundus' power. Dante beats him (after three battles like DMC3) and frees his soul or something like that.

In the reailty of the game there a definite 'death', though with demons and all that jazz it's debatable. In Virgils case you can say he didn't really die so much as 'give in' to his loss to Dante, staying in the Demon World. So as Nelo Angelo he was pretty alive and well. So I think his release from Mundus would free him from the Nelo persona, and he now wanders the Demon World in his human form.

DMC4 takes place after 1 and before 2 (most likely setting a reason for DMC2's suckness). And here we got a guy who looks like Dante, wears a blue coat, and has a name not unlike Nelo. Then again, Nero doesn't have any of Virgil's trademark stuff aside from a blue coat. One thing's for sure: Virgil has a fanbase, and Capcom will do something with that in mind.

This has been a geek-study by Kalyx triaD.

WTF?

DMC4 takes place BEFORE 2?

Like Youell, this is one of my main reasons for wanting a PS3, but come on. Give me something to bury DMC 2 with. Not that I thought it was a BAD game, because I didn't. But by DMC standards, it was bad. :(

DMC 2 was very very bad. Good idea's in princible, but the bosses were horrible, the normal enemies were basically generic upgrades of themselves

And those dam bloodgoats were a royal pain in the ass.

The only good thing about DMC 2 was that side game where you can go down loads of levels and pick up loads of extra orbs

Funky Fly 09-15-2006 12:09 AM

I phave DMC3. Those cutscenes are so fucking cheesey. Ridiculous.

Kalyx triaD 09-15-2006 12:21 AM

I love it.

The music that played when Lady killed her father? Ha! It was moving and LOL at the same time.

Everything's over the top.

Funky Fly 09-15-2006 12:59 AM

Didn't get that far! SPOILER WARNING!!!!!1 DJKGHKHGHG

Nah, I figured shit like that would happen.

Kalyx triaD 09-15-2006 01:06 AM

Whoops!! Sorry.

Makes you feel any better it was really an obvious turn, and bigger revalations happen after the 2nd battle with Virgil (I recommend Royal Guard for that one).

Disturbed316 09-15-2006 05:51 PM

I didn't think DMC2 was so bad, but compared to the others it was. The story for DMC4 doesn't really grab me like the previous games for some reason :-\

Here's the new kid, Nero. Sporting a huge revolver at some unlucky demon (maybe Dante?). The PS3's power is kick-ass here. And he's definately younger than Dante, so the 'Virgil reborn' thing is out.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2.../AgedDante.jpg
Dante's looking... mature. There's some screens that show him off in a gameplay position, so I guess Capcom is going back to the dual narrative style of presentation. Geek-note: The sword he's holding appears to be Pre-Demon Form Rebellion, which is strange; he should be using ForceEdge or atleast the Sparda.

Disturbed316 09-15-2006 06:41 PM

Mature Dante = :y:

Y2Jeremy 09-19-2006 07:32 PM

I can't wait for this game. I hope that it is a dual narrative, with us playing as Nero first and interweaving with Dante, him stopping our plans constantly. Then, you can unlock Dante, and play from his point of view.

Dave Youell 09-20-2006 05:41 AM

Nero = Dante's Son?

That could work.

Oh and Royal Gaurd was rubbish.

Trickster all the way, pretending your Neo all the time = Fun

That or GunSlinger

Kalyx triaD 09-20-2006 04:00 PM

Royal Gaurd owns all. But admittingly it isn't that fun at all, it does make you look professionl. Trickster's the most fun, Gunslinger's if I wanna be lazy about it. Sword Master makes me aggressive and shit, makng people who watch me play worried.

I seriously never saw the appeal of Royal Gaurd at all.

Explain to be what extra you can do except block better and move to a better location whilst fighting?

Kalyx triaD 09-22-2006 02:07 PM

Say you're surrounded by demons. RG's blocking is actually a parry (timed right) that counts as a move in a combo. So it can be like:

Slash, slash, PARRY!, slash, slash, etc (Cool!) And so on.

When you parry, you take no damage like when you simply block. But the best use of it is against bosses. Most bosses have an animated reaction to a parry, or atleast 'obeys' the rules of one. So if you're in a high enough zen during gameplay, you can battle a boss face-to-face knocking off any melee attack they dish out. This is why I use it on Virgil alot, he's a melee boss primarily. You can even parry combos if you're good enough. I even did some air-parries against Beuwulf. It's something somebody watching you play wouldn't notice, but you'll love yoursef for every good parry.

To be honest it works better on bosses than goons. After you parry one strike from a demon and try to attack, another one will go for a hit, making you wonder whether to follow-up or parry again.

DMC3 leaves little time for that kind of thinking.

So like I said it isn't the most fun but it's pro as shit. I got some TGS updates up the wahzoo coming up...

TGS 2006: Devil May Cry 4 Hands-On

The Devil Arm Extends
by Andrew Alfonso (IGN.com)
September 21, 2006

Being a member of the press is good, because you can get away with nearly everything just by flashing the "press" sticker around. At the Tokyo Game Show today, we were the first members of the North American press at Capcom's booth, and we got to go through Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 twice before Capcom representatives asked us to leave.

From earlier news, we know that Dante is no longer the main character in the game. Rather, Nero is his replacement. Sporting a dual-barrel pistol and his sword called the Red Queen, Nero is similar in playing style to Dante but with a few key differences. The main change is the inclusion of the Devil Arm/Buster move, which is executed by pressing O. By pressing O by itself, you can execute a simple punch/throw move which will slam enemies into the ground. However, the fun really starts when you start using the Devil Arm move, which is done by pressing O in conjunction with the analog stick. Nero will then extend his arm out, and a ghoulish arm will extend even further, grab an enemy (or enemies) and reel them in for an extended combo. This works not only on the ground, but in the air as well. You can easily jump up and then extend the Devil Arm and start an air combo, then finish off with the Buster, which will slam them back into the ground. Not only is this an effective way to continue combos, but it also helps you clear out enemies faster; you can actually grab multiple enemies at the same time if they're bunched together.

The acceleration system that was mentioned previously doesn't seem to be implemented just yet, because during a melee we were able to simply mash on the slash button without any penalty. Nero's melee attacks are slightly different than what Dante has. There's the standard four hit combo and the uppercut-style slash that allows you to start air combos. Nero's Stinger attack is different from Dante in that it's a horizontal slash rather than a straight thrust, which allows you to cut through multiple enemies at the same time. Nero's firing rate is a little slower than Dante, but that's to be expected because he's only carrying one gun. Because the new system wasn't added to the demo, the game feels a lot like previous iterations rather than a wholly new experience. It's disappointing because I personally hoped that playing Nero would be really different from Dante, but at this point it isn't.

As far as visuals go, DMC4 was looking absolutely incredible and probably better than any other demo on the show floor today. The amount of detail that every character has is unbelievable. Even the Marionettes had textures that had to be seen to be believed. You can actually see the stitching on each part of their bodies, and they look much more manufactured than before. That's not a bad thing either; instead of looking like an enemy that was designed as a whole, they actually look like someone grabbed random pieces and threw them together to make a diabolical creation. The lighting effects were also really nice, especially in the latter part of the demo. The first part of the demo took place in the courtyard and castle, where you could see the sun streaking through the windows of the castle. But the second part of the demo took place in an abandoned harbor, with the sun slowly setting. Here you could see the sunlight reflecting off the ocean, creating an incredible visual effect.

While the demo took about 10 to 20 minutes to finish depending on how good you were (it took us a good 12 minutes to get through it) it ended with the biggest cocktease ever. Previous DMC demos allowed you to play through a level and fight an endboss. This was the case with DMC1 where you could fight the Phantom (the giant spider) and in DMC3 where you fought Cerberus. We've seen footage of the giant Barlog-ish boss from the trailer, and we were pumped up and ready to take him on. At the end of the demo, we stumbled upon a giant barrier that started to sear from the extreme heat. We saw the Barlog burst through the barrier. We were ready to fight it!

We got a "Coming Soon..." message.

Bollocks, Capcom. Just Bollocks. We'll have more info on the game in the coming days. Stay tuned!

Progress Report:

- As you better know by now, XB360 will get some devil love.
- Dante will be playable with stages not in Nero's adventure.
- Dante's five styles will return with the ability to switch them IN GAME. Top tier DMC players will feel me on this one.
- Those ice bastards from part one are back.

Is that the walk of a man scared of fire demons?

The official site has a vid of Dante in action. It's short, but it shows his transitions between styles. A colored flare goes about it and he announces the new style with a taunt. His sword Rebellion now leaves a blackish trail behind it.

DMC4 drops next February with a demo for both consoles (presumably) early that month.

So pumped for this game

Fignuts 12-31-2007 01:21 PM

I hope it goes back to the difficulty of 1 and 2. 3 was a lot more frustrating than fun at times.

Kalyx triaD 12-31-2007 04:23 PM

Lucky you; DMC4 will ease in gamers that aren't so kean on the crazy difficulty. I suspect there will be settings for guys who like their demons wild and unmerciless like me.

"My Strength - His Bane And I Will Never Give In!":

The DMC4 demo drops on 'Live (oh, and PSN) the 25th. It'll have short samples of a few environments as well as a boss battle against the hot-head demon Berial. Full game drops Feb. 5th.
