Big deal: Blazers send Wallace packing

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) - Rasheed Wallace no longer is the Portland Trail Blazers' problem.

The Trail Blazers on Monday shipped the temperamental forward along with swingman Wesley Person to the Atlanta Hawks for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, center Theo Ratliff and guard Dan Dickau.

"Since (general manager) John Nash and I came here last summer, we pursued a plan that would take character into account with talent, create cap flexibility while continuing to put a competitive team on the court," Portland president Steve Patterson said.

"The community has been very clear in their message and we are listening. As we pledged to our fans and customers back in August, we want to build a competitive team on the court and one in which the fans can also be proud of off the court. Today's trade is a reflection of that commitment."

Heh hope Wallace enjoyed Raw tonight

Damn of all teams the Hawks.

DaveWadding 02-10-2004 12:37 AM

Wow...the Hawks just got jacked.

KingofOldSchool 02-10-2004 12:38 AM

LOL.

Kristanna Vola 02-10-2004 12:40 AM

Yeah I know it stunned the heck of out me also. I was watching the college game on ESPN and it came across the sports ticker, I had to check to make sure I wasn't seeing things. :shifty:

Supermark101 02-10-2004 12:45 AM

So...
Not that shocked by this. It was only a matter of time before he was traded.

Only thing I don't get is why did Atlanta give up so much. Even in the East they are not going to make the playoffs, and Wallace isn't going to sign with a losing team.

Good PR move, by Atlanta, I guess. They are showing there fans they are trying.

Splaya 02-10-2004 12:45 AM

If you think Wallace threw pissy fits in Portland, wait till Atlanta. Man they have really turned upside down that Blazer team.

The Icon of Elisim 02-10-2004 02:54 AM

Eh, pretty bad trade. Maybe this is just a cap move so that the Hawks can be active in free agency

Heyman 02-10-2004 02:57 AM

I followed Sharif Abdur Rahim's career when he was in Vancouver. One of my fav's at the time. :y:

I think Portland made a great trade. Wallace was very overrated IMO.

p.s.

LOL good luck sheed you clown

Loose Cannon 02-10-2004 12:49 PM

LMAO, WTF are the Hawks thinking. You can't improve your team by adding a complete lunatic to your team.

VonErich Lives 02-10-2004 12:58 PM

I wonder what time they made the trade, Wallace was front row at Raw... think he got the call there?

I think they probably waited until he wasn't around a bunch of people. Who knows what the psycho would of done.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-10-2004 03:17 PM

Yeah, I mean Wallace is a dumbass and everything but you guys are talking like he is some crazy guy with no control over his life or something. He does do stupid shit a lot when it comes basketball, but I mean we don't this guy personally or anything. I'm sure you guys all know, and hang out with, kids a lot worse than Rasheed Wallace lol

Anyways, I think the Hawks are pretty much tanking it till next season (Why not? They suck anyways) and they iwll have tons of salary cap space now, since htey dumped Reef and Theo's contracts.

Gertner 02-10-2004 06:17 PM

great trade for both teams! Rasheed gets better weed, and the blazers get some good players!

The deal isn't that bad for either team. The Hawks are out of contention with their current lineup, so obviously it doesn't do any good to keep their two and three guys when the rest of the team is shit. So they trade and get Rasheed, he doesn't do shit on their shitty team this year, next year he is gone, Terrell Brandon's contract runs out, they have tonns...TONNS of room under the cap for next year. Word is that they are trying to sign Kobe next year, unlikely, but they will have room to start over now.

And for Portland it isn't such a bad move either. The Dampier and Van Exel for Rasheed wasn't as good for Portland, because Damon Stademaier is playing good right now and Van Exel is out next year no matter what. The only problem for Portland now is that they have too many forwards. Randolph, Miles, Shareef, Ratliff. If they could trade maybe Miles for a good sG they could really be a playoff contender soon.

I think this puts both teams in a good position for the future.

Kristanna Vola 02-10-2004 11:49 PM

Yes ATL is going to have a bank roll of cash. If Kobe goes anywhere right now I would tell him (if he isn't hoopin it up in a cell block) to head to the Knicks. Thomas has put that team back on the map.

Portland got rid of number one thugga in Wallace :y: , so this was a good deal hands down. I was a little stunned because I would have thought they would have traded his butt a few years ago.

Don't expect Atlanta to spend their extra cash (I think its about 20 million) unless they get sold

SF: Reef
PF: Randolph
C: Ratliff

Miles isn't good enough to be a starter, he'll be decent coming off the bench. Plus like you said Stodemire is playing good right now, plus don't sleep on Dan Dickau....he was nasty at Gonzaga. There roster is looking pretty good right now.

Tidus 02-11-2004 12:11 AM

The only thing going for the Hawks is that they are 40 million dollars under cap

Kristanna Vola 02-11-2004 12:27 AM

You're right but who in the hell would come to play for them? Maybe they can get Mike Vick to play a few games for them next season. He could play the point. :shifty:

The same thing could have been said about the Detroit Tigers, but now we've got Pudge. Anything can happen in pro sports if the money's right.

The Icon of Elisim 02-11-2004 10:40 AM

A lot of players like to play in their hometown even if the team sucks. Plus money can make a person do stupid things.

BCWWF 02-11-2004 04:03 PM

I hope Kobe signs with the Clippers. Corey Magette, Elton Brand, and Kobe could make a decent team and it would be cool to have kind of a cross town rivalry there.

Corkscrewed 02-11-2004 04:15 PM

It's a great move for both teams. The Jail Blazers have been needing change for a while, and this should really help the team. Atlanta's payroll gets a great boost here too, because they know they're not keeping Rasheed.

Also, Portland has Randolph, so they don't need Rasheed.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-11-2004 04:37 PM

It would be cool if Kobe was on the Clippers, I actually like the Clippers..can't stand the Lakers though

DaveWadding 02-11-2004 06:44 PM

It's that Bitter Boston Fan complex, stima.

BCWWF 02-11-2004 09:49 PM

My bad, Q-Rich too. Damn, even better.

Crimson 02-11-2004 11:35 PM

Kobe to the Clippers =

I wonder if that tight ass Sterling will make a run at him. :/
