The gimmick only works as long as the wrestler has a counter-gimmick or storyline to work with.
Heel Doink worked well because when he came to be in the WWF he fueded with Uber-Face (and my fav. wrestler at the time) Crush.
Mankind's first gimmick went over very well because it was the crazy person VS the deadman, and he was able to take the deadman out.
Papa Shango was a damn good gimmick because he was able to take the Warrior down and out.
The Undertaker's first gimmick was proff that you didn't have to totally change everything to go from face to heel. The undefeated Undertaker took out The immortal Hulk Hogan, and then fued with Jake Roberts when he told Jake that wasn't on his side without saying he was on the fan's side.
I HATE to say this, but when Lex Luger went pro USA in the WWF, he had a good gimmick when he fueded with Yokozuna, and then teamed up with The Bulldog as the allied powers.
Kane has stayed somewhat fresh because of storyline. Heel with the mask, he was a MONESTER! No one was safe. Face with the mask, he was a freak, and freaks kick ass! Heel without the mask... The word brutal just took a whole new meaning.
New Jack raised the bar for what it means to use a staple gun.
