WWE Star Retires From In-Ring Competition

John Bradshaw Layfield noted in a recent commentary on TheStreet.com that he was retiring from in-ring competition for good. In his final column on the website, JBL wrote, "I have also come to believe that you can't fight father time. A broken back suffered in a match in England, compounded by a herniated and bulged disc, finally made me realize my career as a professional wrestler was over. I since migrated to the color commentary position much in the way that Jesse Ventura did before me."

JBL was injured shortly after WrestleMania, during the overseas trip of Europe in late April. Despite his injury, JBL continued to wrestle and he had successfully politicked himself to beat Rey Mysterio for the World title at the Judgment Day PPV. The plan was for him to be the first person to be the World Champ and the U.S. champ at the same time. However, on the week of the PPV, he sensed that that he couldn't wrestle any longer. He told management that he needed to take the summer off due to the pain and injury. He lost the PPV match, then two days later at Smackdown taping, he lost the U.S. title in quick match to Bobby Lashley. During the same show, he vowed to leave SmackDown if he didn't beat Rey Mysterio for the title later that night. He lost the match and then he went on to his announcing role in June.

You know, people give him a lot of shit, but he willingly turned down a title because he knew he couldn't do it. I never liked Bradshaw until the JBL days, but he picked up that ball and ran non stop with it. The man is brillant on the mic, and hopefully they keep him around for a long time to come.

Bummer. But atleast he found something new to do, in commentating, and he does that pretty well.

Eh, not pleased he politicked himself into getting the World and US title at the same time, but at least he realized his limits and gave up the win.

How did he do it?

Everyone saw the end from a mile away...I actually ordered that PPV expecting to see JBL win the World Title...I have not ordered a single PPV since then. Seriously, my pants where down, the lotion was out, I had locked the doors and closed the windows...I WAS READY...but no. WWE is a huge fucking cock tease!:foc:

Instead I only got anally "raped" by a US Champ...Who hasn't had a US Champ's dick in their ass??? I wanted to be different and special.

How else? He messed with the Iron Shiek, and Shiek just had to make him "hum-bell"

Yeah, I think he was one of the greatest heels but at least we'll still get to hear him on commentary.

But Kurt Angle gets so much sympathy....

Hes been gold as jbl. I also liked the acolytes. So this sucks.

This hurts because JBL was by far my favorite charachter in WWE.

It's understandable. JBL's retirement is no great loss to wrestling in terms of in ring performance where as Angle's is!

JBL can stay around and do what everyone loved him for. He can entertain on the mic, whether it be in the commentary booth or as a manager or better still as GM, broken back or not.

Angle can't (at least for the time being) stick around and do what people loved him for. He is broken down, he can't wrestle. Granted Angle is gold on the mic too but that was only a part of why people loved him.

JBL should so be RAW GM when Vince realises that his fued/matches/segments aren't as funny/entertaining as he thinks and finally does the decent thing and leaves aour screens for a while.

Best of luck, Bradshaw. You really stepped up your game in the latter years of your carreer.

Consider the circumstances because they are similar between the two. They were counting on Angle helping out in a huge way in ECW and they wanted JBL to have another major title reign on SmackDown!. Both men ended up in situations where they couldn't fulfill those expectations. JBL realized it, Angle didn't and ended up getting what he deserved because of it. Their contributions to the ring are irrelevant. Why blast one guy for bowing out when he saw fit but be all sympathetic and upset for another being too damn stubborn for his own good?

Cause one isnt a dickhead rapist?

Wouldn't he still be one seeing as he's not gone from the company entirely?

Harder to rape if your back hurts?

If a man has needs he'll fight through the pain.

I swear to god, if a wrestler isn't a technical genius, he gets blasted by the IWC. There is more to being a great wrestler than being able to chain together a bunch of sunset flips. The guy had great in ring psychology. He styled himself after Stan Hanson, and added his own twist in the cowardly heel. And I might add it was a long time since we had seen a cowardly heel champion, let alone played so well. Finally, nobody liked the decision to make JBL champ. Even I hated him at the time, and was not open at all to the change. But the fact that he swayed me, and so many other people is a credit to just how great a performer he really is.

So yes, this IS a great loss to proffesional wrestling.

Skippord is just upset that while he was busy jerking off a SPOT FUCKING MONKEY, JBL was on any given night entertaining crowds larger than the collection of people who have ever given a shit about Chris Sabin.

To me, JBL is still Bradshaw, the perrenial mid-card jobber. His matches were always tedious and boring. I won't miss him at all.

I didn't say there weren't similarities. I merely said what my opinion on why their announcements have been treated with different reactions.


He IS great on the mic but I don't think you will convince me (or many others) that he is a loss in ring. Which is what I originally stated.


You have to remember that JBL is still part of the product. The loss of him is not on such a grand scale. He's still around. Angle won't be for the forceable future.



I hope you realise that my post was not a criticism of JBL, I was trying to rationalise the thoughts of others in terms of the lack of sympathy JBL was receiving.

But he is one of the stalest wrestlers in the world.

Like every X divison guy. With the exception being Alex Shelly and Shenshe, and thats only becasue Shenshe has been there long enough.

Also losing JBL in the ring isn't a big loss at all.

Of course it is, but he is a multi- millionaire who is still working with the company. So I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.
