Studios back out of 'Halo' movie

Variety is reporting that studio co-financiers Universal and Fox have backed out of the Halo movie. The industry news source claims rising costs for the film's production caused the rift.

The studios demanded that Microsoft, the publishers of the popular video game, and the film's producing team, lead by Peter Jackson, take a pay cut in light of the rising price tag. Both "respectfully declined" says a rep for Jackson.

Microsoft was reported to receive $5 million upfront and 10% of the box office gross as rights holder to the game.

The budget on the film was rumored to be upwards of $200 million. Jackson's rep claimed the costs of the New Zealand based production were significantly less, around $130 million.

Universal and Fox were also rumored to be concerned over the inexperience of Halo's rookie director Neill Blomkamp. But Jackson and team are standing by their man. The Jackson rep stated, "Part of what excited Peter and [producing partner] Fran [Walsh] was Neal's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."

Microsoft is currently in talks with other studios, so says Variety, so any pre-production delays should be minor.

We're still holding our breath that they'll finish Halo for a summer 2008 release -- but we're running out of air.

It would have been shit anyway.

Kalyx triaD 10-23-2006 08:56 PM

It has just as much chance at being good. Peter Jackson and his WETA crew are the shit.

It will get made. Normally movies I want to see get made don't, but this one will. Peter Jackson is just too big right now to not get something made he wants to produce. Same with Microsoft, they own half the world and Halo is theirs. I'm sure some studio will pounce. I wouldnt be suprised if New Line did.

I'm sure it'll be decent as an action flick, but a huge disappointment compared to the game itself.

Its hard to make a video game movie. All I hope for this movie is to be a good action flick with a little bit more substance than the average shoot em up popcorn movie, not too much to ask for the subject matter they have to work with. I just would like to see approx 2 hr 10min of well made action with a decent script and actual talent in filmmaking. I'm sure WETA will provide the rest. It should have a little bit of an epic edge to it, but if they try to make it too epic it just wont work.
Nobody has made a good video game movie yet so they should focus on making it work as a regular movie period before they get too overzealous.
If you make the first one work fairly simply, you can always get grander with a sequel.

Doom 2

Dave Youell 10-24-2006 04:18 AM

I'm sure someone else will pick it up, if they wanted to.

I mean it's a pretty basic story line, you have basically got to make something like starship troopers, only something better than starship troopers. Alot better

Dave Youell 10-24-2006 04:18 AM

Oh and don't let Uwe Boll touch it

Skippord 10-24-2006 08:54 PM

Excuse me while I continue not caring

Boondock Saint 10-24-2006 09:05 PM

Starship Troopers is nasty.

D Mac 10-25-2006 12:54 AM

Nasty as in good or nasty as in bad?

Jeritron 10-25-2006 03:48 AM

Nasty as in its sequel was straight to dvd, like the original should have been to begin with.

Boondock Saint 10-25-2006 09:58 AM

Nah, as in good.

ClockShot 10-25-2006 01:13 PM

Did they every announce who was playing Master Chief?

D Mac 10-25-2006 02:00 PM

There were rumors they wanted Denzel Washington.
