The biggest band in the world

Who is the biggest band in the world right now. U2 always claims that they are but I don't buy that. Metallica had that title but not so much right now. So who is the current biggest band?

samichna 11-01-2006 12:49 PM

Sadly, and honestly, it probably is U2.

Avenger 11-01-2006 01:15 PM

why sadly?

Avenger 11-01-2006 01:16 PM

BTW "The Biggest Band in the World" is such an ambiguos statement its so hard to actually answer.

Probably who sold the most albums in the last year or two.

Stickman 11-01-2006 01:20 PM

The thing about U2 is I really have a hard time finding people who love them right now. My brother does but thats it. It seems like the radio plays the hell out of them so people out there obviously love them. But talking to people nobody thinks they're all that.

KingofOldSchool 11-01-2006 01:26 PM

Probably The Rolling Stones and U2.

Skippord 11-01-2006 04:26 PM

Tool? I dunno

I sincerely doubt that Tool could outsell the Stones or U2 as far as album sales or ticket sales. Not to mention that Stones tickets probably cost 2 - 3 times what Tool tickets do.

Stickman 11-01-2006 04:30 PM

It could be the Stones as they're selling out every night right now.

I like U2, its better than that fucking god awful shit like Nickelback or that EMO shit that is out there right now. Plus I hate rap so yeah, U2 is better than that shit at least

Indifferent Clox 11-01-2006 05:08 PM

Besides the aformentioned U2 and Stones I'd have to say
Red Hot Chilli peppers or greenday.

As far as new bands I'd say My Chemical Romance.

Their new album isn't half bad either.. crazy as that may seem.

Boomer 11-01-2006 06:37 PM

I dunno about U2. Almost nobody I know likes them.

KingofOldSchool 11-01-2006 06:44 PM

I'd rank the bands like this (which I'm basing on ticket sales and ticket prices)

1. The Rolling Stones
2. U2
3. Dave Matthews Band
4. Pearl Jam
5. Green Day
6. Coldplay
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers

I can't really be bothered to figure out more. I wish I could find the article that gave the numbers, although it's a few months out dated.

Are you honestly going to say more people like RHCP or Greenday than the Stones?

Are you serious?

Album sales don't mean jack in the long run, sure it gives the band and record label something to brag about, however nowadays there is more people downloading and that doesn't factor into total sales.

It's the concerts that make a band what they are. Just because a band is #1 on the charts, doesn't mean it will cause their concerts to be extremely successful.

MVP 11-01-2006 07:53 PM

So the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, and Coldplay are the only good bands that are popular now.

I think he's trying to name the biggest bands of this era.

FakeLaser 11-01-2006 07:59 PM

Also, U2 sucks.

Skippord 11-01-2006 09:25 PM

They sure do

KingofOldSchool 11-01-2006 10:46 PM

They do, also was never a fan of the Stones. But I do love me some Aerosmith.

Funky Fly 11-02-2006 03:26 AM

A lot of people like U2. Somehow I've never met any of them.

RP 11-02-2006 03:53 AM

probably Nickleback

Considering more people that like the Stones, are dead...

Not Likely

packt up 11-02-2006 07:10 AM

U2 though I don't like them.

El Fangel 11-02-2006 07:34 AM

I would have to say Metallica is up there in the big, and well known bands.

Impact! 11-02-2006 09:44 AM

I hate U2 almost as much as I hate Wolfmother.

Joey Slugs 11-02-2006 01:07 PM

As long as they are still breathing... it was always be The Rolling Stones.

samichna 11-02-2006 01:14 PM

They're still breathing?

Its hard to say if they're still the Biggest Band in the World. Mind you, if there next CD is not like St Anger, they will be.

Granted, Metallica did put out some shitty album, Load and Reload, and St.Anger was mediocre at best, it had its gems (IMO) for Dirty Window, thats the only reason I don't put it with Load or Reload. Even if it lost its spot its definatly in the top 5.

Kane Knight 11-02-2006 10:23 PM

Should I know Wolfmother?

AdrianM 11-02-2006 10:28 PM

I'd say:

1. U2
2. Chilli Peppers
3. Coldplay
4. Green Day

Maybe someone like the Killers, panic at the disco (or whatever they're called) could get big soon tho

They put out a series of albums that were considered to be of declining quality. Their sales have tanked, and their band nearly died. TBH, I'm not sure there was ever a time Metallica was #1, but they're not even close right now.

Skippord 11-02-2006 11:42 PM

Wolfmother is awful. I'd rather get my nuts bitten off by a rabid mongoose than listen to their CD

El Fangel 11-02-2006 11:45 PM

I for one haven't considered any album from Metallica quality since The Black Album, but back in the days of Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice for All , can you honestly say Metallica wasn't one of the top bands if not the top.

Would it be that much of a stretch? Metallica were at their most popular, actually, around the black album period. So you're actually asking me to buy that during a lesser time period for them (Again, in terms of popularity and size of attendance), they were on top?

Christ, I think Whacko Jacko was doing better in terms of size of both attendance and overall popularity in the mid-80s. There were probably at least a dozen acts above Metallica then.
