No doubt a stupid question, but how can I transfer music from my ipod to my comp?

If you can access your iPod as a hard drive through my computer, you should be able to copy and paste shit over.

there are lots of programs to download that do such a task

they have plenty of names of programs there

If I put all my music on an external hard drive will that backup my library in case my original files get messed up or are lost? Pretty CPU illiterate here.
