Not going to get into a "when I was young", but... when I was young the movies made you form the effects in your mind, way better than having it spoon fed to you.
Spend too much cash on the effects, that they want to ensure they get a lot of air time to justify the cost, I guess.

It's no different with video games, really.

All about the graphics and to hell with the solid gameplay that actually got everyone to enjoy these games the past 15+ years.

The entertainment industry in general is pretty blah. Always catering to the lowest common denominator.

Do it when it's necessary.
