Opinion: Better Than, But Overshadowed By:

Deep Impact is better than, but overshadowed by Armagedon.

Near Dark is better than, but overshadowed by The Lost Boys.

Blood, Guts, Bullets, and Octane is better than, but overshadowed by The Usual Suspects. It's also better than Reservoir Dogs.

these were all rather quietly released at about the same time as the more mass appeal counter part. they are also similar to the counter part. they typically lack star-power or just lack blockbuster mass appeal.

Know of any others?

Discuss.

i will try to check out Equalibrium and Infernal Affairs. i had never heard of them. As far as Dantes Peak, I have heard of it, but it did not capture my interest. I had never heard of Volcano, but a valcano disaster movie doesnt sound like my cup of tea.

"overshadowed by Kung Fu Hustle" man, that's fucked up.

Equilibrium is pretty damn good, dunno if I'd say its better than the Matrix but well worth watching regardless. Infernal Affairs is the original Hong Kong film that The Departed was based on.

Yeah, I was actually contemplating not putting it in, but then I kind of took the chance, as it stars Christian Bale, and he is a God.

He would have been a far better Neo than Keanu Reeves, in my opinion. I think I could safely say that Equilibrium is better than The Matrix sequels (at least Revolutions), and as it was released in 2003 (I think), that is kind of a more relevant statement to make.

I don't get all the love for Equilibrium. Yes, Christian Bale was in it, but the acting was pretty low quality and it had that ridiculous "Gun-Fu" shit. Still an average movie, but the Matrix was much better IMO.

To be perfectly honest, I agree with you. I don't actually love the movie for its action, there are two things that make the movie for me.

The first is the acting. Not the greatest, and not the best from everyone involved, but that black guy in it (LOL, it's not a great thing that I can't remember his name) had some pretty good energy, even if the story kind of lost me. Bale just always get me, I don't know what it is.

It may seem a bit unjustified worshiping a movie because of one scene, but the second thing is the scene where Bale has just come off his emotion-suppressants, and he picks up the puppy trying to escape. I don't know, but this is just a great scene to me, and it made me love and respect this movie.

the Matrix movies are not a real trilogy to me, because the first one is the only one that really matters. and i have my doubts if was conceived as a trilogy. i would not be suprised if the two sequels were an after-thought, based on the success of the first movie.

Dark City is a movie which i own on VHS. it was given to me like 9 years ago. i watched it once, didnt care for it, and havnt watched it since. I here nothing but good things about it here on tpww. i'll definitely give it another shot.

i knew this guy who told me he didnt like The Crow. I asked him how in the fuck can he not like The Crow. he told me it was because the movie was dank and depressing because it was always either dark or raining. the sun never shone in that movie. i thought it was a stupid reason, but i think that might be partly why Dark City failed to capture my interest. the way i remember it, it seems like almost the entire movie takes place in a sewer somewhere. and frantic, frantic rambling by Keifer Sutherland throughout much of it too. but i will give it another chance.

Saw stole Seven's thunder, and of course Seven is better. I don't know if it overshadows it but surely you can see the parallells.

KillerWolf 01-14-2007 06:26 AM

^ i'm gonna say no, because the release dates were many years apart. i would say that the movie SE7EN had pretty much ran it's course by the time SAW was released.

KillerWolf 01-14-2007 06:31 AM

okay, so i watched Dark City a couple days ago, and yeah, definitely much better than my fuzzy memory of it. pretty good movie. i did think that the big battle at the end was a little cheesy. better than the first Matrix movie? i'm gonna have to say no. better than the two sequels? probably. i havn't seen 'em.
