Lock Up. Sylvester Stalone (1987). Basically, Rocky does hard time at a prison where the evil warden hates him.

why it doesnt: good performances by Donald Sutherland, Tom Siezmore, and pretty much the entire cast - even Stalone isn't too terrible. suprisingly human storylines.

also, it's full of classic lines.

In Hell. Jeane Claude Van Damme. (2003 - i think). Van Dam is sentenced to life in a Russian prison for killing the man who killed his wife. prisoners are forced to fight each other for the entertainment and gambling of the warden and staff.

why you'd think it sucks: why it doesn't suck: while the first 15 minutes of the movie start off like typical bad action movie crap, once it enters the prison, the movie becomes suprisingly brutal and realistic. some very good fight scenes. they seem like some real MMA fights. no spinning round house kicks in this movie. probably Van Damme's best performance. the movie is suprisingly brutal and suprisingly entertaining.
