Josh Mathews isn't quite as good as Joey Styles, in my opinion (the real Joey Styles), but he's the next best thing. Here are the commentary teams I'd like to see:
Joey Styles & JBL
Michael Cole & Tazz
Josh Mathews & Jerry Lawler
Todd Grisham & Brad Armstrong
Styles and Layfield should be the focused duo of the WWE. Styles is kind of left-wing and used to work for ECW, Layfield is your stereotypical redneck WWE veteran who once worked the territories. They contrast well, and both guys know how to talk well.
Michael Cole and Tazz should work ECW. For a little while, Cole and Tazz had a cult following. That's pretty ECW-ish. Cole is constricted by the WWE-style, and although that won't likely change, he brought out the best in Tazz. Give them an hour live each week, and you have potential gold.
I doubt the WWE will scrap Jerry Lawler, so I'm just going to suggest they stick him with a guy who can handle his own in there with Lawler. Mathews is good at playing a heel commentator without actually going overboard with it. I can see him developing good chemistry with Lawler. Give them SmackDown! so they can edit some parts and maybe have them re-do certain matches to get it perfect.
Todd Grisham and Brad Armstrong would just be two guys calling Heat. Both are apparently funny, and I can see them becomming kind of a cult-favourite commentary team if the WWE just lets them be themselves. Grisham is improving by leaps and bounds, he's got a good voice, and he sounds like he wants to improve. Armstrong could help him, as he's well versed in the business.
