Soccer team names

Why the fuck are so many team nicknames "FC" "United" or "Real"? How about some originality?

Rob 01-16-2007 06:48 PM

"FC" stands for Football Club. Not a nickname.

And they aren't nicknames anyway. It's the team name. Better than calling them Sharks, Dodgers, Bulls or some other moronic American influenced shite.

BCWWF 01-16-2007 06:52 PM

I like how European teams are emphasized more on the city than a stupid nickname. Some American nicknames are cool and make sense, but so many are just stupid. See Detroit.

BCWWF 01-16-2007 06:53 PM

Do soccer teams even really have nicknames? I mean I've heard so many teams called the blues, and Red Devils seems more like just something to say rather than anything official.

Rob 01-16-2007 07:07 PM

Yeah most do but it's stuff like the blues or what not. Red Devils is Man United's though.

Yeah, they do. See 'The Toffees', 'The Gunners', 'The Latics', 'The Addicks' etc

Stickman 01-16-2007 07:14 PM

Also, can't stand the advertizing on the jerseys.

ct2k 01-16-2007 07:15 PM

Well Stickman I'll say this, I prefer advertising on the shirts to commercial breaks between every goddamn half inning or at every time out

Nervous Ferret 01-16-2007 11:46 PM

Memphis Grizzlies

CSL 01-17-2007 08:01 AM

Do they even have bears in Memphis?

Or Vancouver for that matter?

ct2k 01-17-2007 08:18 AM

I don't think they ever had Raptors in Toronto yknow

ct2k 01-17-2007 08:19 AM

Or Jazz in Utah for that matter, but they started in N'awlins so thats excusable

Not in the City of Vancouver, but in the Suburbs you could find them.

BCWWF 01-17-2007 07:27 PM

Bears? Maybe somewhere in Vancouver as a whole, but bears in any suburb of a city seems a bit stretchy.

Yeah because stopping the game every 10 seconds to watch omo commercials is so much better

yianni 01-18-2007 11:30 AM

Official nicknames are shitty and cheesy. Unofficial ones are alright eg. Manchester United and Red Devils or Arsenal and Gunners.

Ogen 01-18-2007 03:34 PM

New York Red Bulls

Nervous Ferret 01-18-2007 03:38 PM

You'll see bears in North Vancouver, which is a suburb north of Vancouver as the name says. It's actually just over a bridge away. Where I live, about 35 minutes east of the City I've seen bears. Actually, you might see bears in Port Moody which is like 15 minutes away from the City. I wouldn't be surprised if there has been bear sightings in Vancouver.

El Capitano Gatisto 01-21-2007 06:47 PM

Real is Spanish for Royal. It's only common in Spain. You'll notice any of the teams with Real in their name will have a crown on their badge.

It doesn't make much sense for whatever MLS team it is to have a Real on their name. That's a stupid gimmick.

YOUR Hero 01-21-2007 09:03 PM

So if I understand correctly, there are no commercials shown during soccer games because the teams have corporate logos on their uniforms?

Boondock Saint 01-21-2007 09:38 PM

Only during half time. At least in America...

Nope it's pretty much because there are no timeouts or things of that nature. If a player gets injured for example he gets taken off the field and however long it takes gets added onto the end of the half as injury time. Shirt sponsorships are just ways for the clubs to make money, it doesn't affect TV in any way.

Could look at it that way but their is shirt sponsorship all the way down the leauges where there'll be little to no media coverage. I'll take a logo on the front of a jersey over ads every minute any day.

Stickman 01-22-2007 04:47 PM

Ya, soccer is king at not having commercials. When they do sometimes I notice there's a split screen so you can still watch the game but the commercial is on

Ogen 01-22-2007 05:12 PM

They'd be lynched for trying that here

BCWWF 01-22-2007 05:34 PM

There was something in a technology magazine I was reading recently that had some predictions for this year, and one was that soccer would gain a lot of popularity this year because of how much better it is to watch on the widescreen TV's, which are really taking off this year.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

Boondock Saint 01-22-2007 06:22 PM

I wish FSC would go fucking HD. Their broadcasts look kinda crappy.

The World Cup looked GLORIOUS in HD.

weather vane 01-22-2007 06:29 PM

lol soccer is so gay

BCWWF 01-23-2007 06:01 PM

Yeah, I think FSC isn't HD because a lot of what it shows are shitty foreign broadcasts. At least that is what I gather. Still, hands down my favorite channel. So far I have watched more soccer last semester in the U.S. that I have in England. Sucks not having a working TV.

Go to professional football match in England, Argentina, Italy or Turkey and tell the fans that in their native tongue, see if you live to tell the tale;)

What the hell is wrong with te Detroit team names? they are better than being called the "toffee men" or the "Wednesday". How dumb is that, being named after a day of the week? but soccer is such shit that it doesn't matter what the hell the names are.

ct2k 01-24-2007 07:45 AM
