Before the game each team is given a point handicap, i.e. at the moment the Colts are 7 point favourites for the Superbowl, which would be -7. If you want to bet on the Colts, you need them to outscore the Bears by 8 to win. If they win but by less than 8, the Bears would 'win' since they beat the spread.

So something like

Colts 35 Bears 20 - Colts win, won by more than 7
Colts 28 Bears 24 - Bears win, lost by less than 7
