The Beatles Appreciation Thread

I went scrolling through the Music Forum and didn't find a single thread dedicated solely to the lads, the Fab Four, the...what other nicknames did they have?

Anyway.

I know there has to be more Beatles fans on here besides me (I'm assuming Nowhere Man is one just 'cause of the name), so I'm setting up this thread so we can all praise (or blast, if that's your bag) the greatest band of the rock & roll era.

So fire away with your album rankings or ten favorite songs or...just to say "George Harrison is the man."

Supreme Olajuwon 02-17-2004 12:41 PM

They're great but they aren't the greatest rock and roll band ever. They we're geniuses at capturing people's attentions and the fact that the music was good didn't hurt either.

Strawberry Fields Forever is my favorite song

Just out of curiosity, who do you think is the greatest?

Loose Cannon 02-17-2004 12:56 PM

Yeah they are definately the greatest band of all-time. They had so many hits, it's hard to count them all. Anyway, here are my fav songs in order

1) Let it Be: play it on the piano all the time
2) Elenor Rigby
3) Penny Lane
4) Strawberry Fields Forever
5) Yellow Submarine: Loved the cartoon movie too
6) In my Life
7) Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
8) Nowhere Man
9) We can Work it Out
10) Yesterday

and it's the FAB FOUR loopy

loopydate 02-17-2004 01:00 PM

D'oh! There was a "Queer Eye" commercial on while I was typing it and the word "Five" jumped onto my keyboard. But, it's been edited, now no one need ever know...

Of course, I COULD have been talking about John, Paul, George, Stu, and Pete in their early days.

Loose Cannon 02-17-2004 01:05 PM

LOL, Wasn't there an SNL sketch one time where eathier the guest host or one of the cast members said he was the fifth beatle, but they kicked him out or something?

loopydate 02-17-2004 01:09 PM

Also, I don't know if I could come up with a short list of favorite songs, but here are my favorites by album:

Please Please Me - I Saw Her Standing There
With The Beatles - Till There Was You
Beatles For Sale - I'll Follow The Sun
Hard Day's Night - If I Fell
Help! - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
Rubber Soul - In My Life (Norwegian Wood is a DAMNED close second)
Revolver - Eleanor Rigby (my all-time fave, but For No One is way up there, too)
Magical Mystery Tour - The Fool On The Hill
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - She's Leaving Home
The Beatles (Disc One) - Julia
The Beatles (Disc Two) - Everybody's Got Something To hide Except Me And My Monkey (Best. Title. Ever.)
Abbey Road - Here Comes The Sun (Something is also one of my faves)
Let It Be - Across The Universe (The Long and Winding Road is way up there too)

I'm not a fan.

loopydate 02-17-2004 01:13 PM

Wait, never mind. Replace Julia with While My Guitar Gently Weeps on my list. I totally forgot that was on that album.

Yeah, I was gonna question that, but I was out the door when I read it.

There are so many people who were a part of the Beatles' legacy that they could make mention in the whole "fifth Beatle" concept.

The Beatles are, perhaps, the greatest pop act ever.

el fregadero 02-17-2004 03:56 PM

Eleanor Rigby
Revolution
Helter Skelter
Let It Be
Get Back

I dunno, just off the top of my head.

The Outlaw 02-17-2004 03:58 PM

Just bought the 1 cd today for like $9.

Yeahh.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 02-17-2004 03:59 PM

I dunno never been a big fan honestly

FakeLaser 02-17-2004 04:31 PM

I HEART THEM.

I'd put Pink Floyd and Queen in front of them. Maybe Dylan too

They are pretty good, but I'm not the biggest fan.

da_king 02-17-2004 07:41 PM

i'm more a fan of their later stuff, probably from revolver on.

For sure. Their early stuff was very good pop, but I'd go back one more and say that from Rubber Soul on, they were at their best.

(Not that I'm arguing with you or anything, but)

I think this proves just how broad the concept of "rock" is.

That the likes of Pink Floyd, Queen, Dylan, and the Beatles all fit in one category is just...:|

Champion of Europa 02-17-2004 07:52 PM

Dylan > Beatles.

Boondock Saint 02-17-2004 08:05 PM

My favorite band ever.

Kane Knight 02-18-2004 10:17 AM

Incidentally, I used a song by the BEatles in my theory class.

"Honey Pie" for the record.

All I really needed was to bring in some sheet music for a piece that modulated to a closely related key (major to minor/minor to major or a change of no more than one sharp or flat). In breaking down the piece, I found some really funky stuff.

Mikey 02-18-2004 03:18 PM

They are a great band

samichna 02-18-2004 03:48 PM

My favourite song is Ticket To Ride

The Outlaw 02-18-2004 06:47 PM

Rubber Soul is gold. :y:

DegenerationY 02-18-2004 08:41 PM

Abbey Road is their best album IMO

As supreme said, PF and Dylan are better but they're damn entertaining.

I would have to agree here.

MVP 02-18-2004 11:42 PM

I'd put Pink Floyd in front of The Beatles out of personal taste, but not Queen.

As for general popularity, no one has more than The Beatles, not even the Rolling Stones.

el fregadero 02-18-2004 11:43 PM

That is true about the popularity.

Joeleosis 02-19-2004 01:18 AM

I was just listening to Magical Mystery Tour in my car. All major Beatle albums on one disc =

Anyway, I've been a fan for as long as I've been alive, apparently.

soconnor 02-22-2004 10:51 AM

All major Beatle albums on one disc = indeed

Abbey Road is probably my favourite at the moment

I don't think many could beat Beatles in terms of song quantity and quality

Ol Dirty Dastard 02-22-2004 01:54 PM

They knew how to write music, and it was freakin hot.

It was a talk show sketch and Eddie Murphy played a guy who claimed to be the fifth Beatle and he had doctored photos of him with the band and he played recordings with his voice over the Beatles. I forgot all about that until I saw this post. Eddie on SNL kicked ass.

SuperSlim 02-24-2004 11:33 AM

never was a fan of the Beatles... but while watchin the news it was said that they were voted on having the stupidest band name...Limp Bizkit came in second
