Would Cena get over if he were black?
I'm not trying to be racist here, but I was wondering whether Cena would be mega-over, in the current gimmick, if he were black. He's acting all ghetto/thuggish and shit, but if they had a black man of similar build, mic style and ring style do the gimmick, would it have gotten a better reaction?
I'm thinking he would have been taken more seriously and would probably be more over. |
He's not black???

One half of Cryme Time is almost as big as John Cena, and at least as entertaining to me (if not moreso).
Not alot of people give a shit about Cryme Time, either. Don't know how much this helps. |

And it's a shame Cryme Tyme isn't that over. The gimmick isn't THAT great (it's more of a one-joke gimmick) but they do pretty well. And they're pretty good in the ring. |
Yeah. It's a one-joke gimmick, but I've laughed at the one joke pretty consistently. I think given time, they could be pretty damn impressive.
But I also like Gene Snitsky, so...not really any kind of expert here. |
Well the large part of wrestling fans are in-bred hicks who thinks blackie's best purpose in the World is to pick their cotton. And then there are the black people who find them offensive to their race.
So naturally two black guys acting like they are a stereotypical thugs but are a comedy act won't get over with most of them. |

He would not be mega-over if he was still a suck up and aimed towards children.
If he was black and a bad ass, then yes. |
Cena still acts ghetto/thugish? I don't really see it, especially not near the level that he used to. Now, he just tries to pull of a blend of nice guy to the fans/bad ass to his opponents that just feels forced. Which is on par with his former ghetto antics.
|
He would've never got the push if he was black. Why? He wasn't exactly over. Push a barely over white guy or a barely over black guy, which do they choose?

Well Cena has "IT" so black or white I say he would have made it.

he DID have something when he started in WWE. but he fell out of favor with real fans once he was sugar-coated and forced down our throats. what has carried him through are the above mentioned attributes IMO. |
It's not even a question, really. If John Cena were black, he would have never been given a push, and he would never have gotten the chance to get over.
Come on, now. This is WWE we're talking about. |
Vince is racist

If we are talking about Survivor Series '03 Cena, maybe.
If we are talking about current Cena: http://www.frogsonice.com/froggy/mjfrog/mjfrog3.gif :nono: |

When Cena doned the thug rapper gimmick, the WWE had released Ron Killings a few months prior. When Ron Killings debuted in TNA, he eventually got over as an angry black man that could rap. At the time, I thought if Killings wasn't released from WWE and had played the gimmick he held in TNA that there would be no need for Cena.
So yea, Ron Killings could've been in the position John Cena is in. :-\ |
Who's Ron Killings? K-Kwick?

Just a comment on the Cryme Tyme thing, their segment on Raw was painful to watch.
|
Guess you could say it was retarded.
|
Ron Killing's rap style was more of a rehash of Men on a Mission that didn't keep with the progression of rap. Gettin' rowdy? Cmon. Cena got to be Eminem, while K-Kwik got to be Kriss Kross, before they started doing drugs or whatever.
|
If we're talking about from the beginning...
the gimmick Cena took on as of that SmackDown when he dressed up as Vanilla Ice would make no sense if he weren't white. Especially in the racial stereotype city known as WWE... the "wannabe rapper" gimmick would be too expected. So, I'd say no. |

it took a long time for wwe to realize that black people do more than just sing and dance. |
They do?

No, he's saying that he'd be perceived differently, not that he'd look differently. There's a rather big difference, but it is nice to see you pull the "...But you don't want to be called a racist" card.

because whatever your deal is, it is preventing you from seeing the simple REALITY of what i was saying, which was that if Cena were black, to most white 8 year old boys, and white 30-something suburban soccer moms and thier 12 year old daughters (you know, the people who actually cheer for Cena), he would be a black guy, not their favoritest wrestler, and not the pin-up boy who all the women cheer for. |
I was really just fucking with you, but OK.

You couldn't have taken that Will Smith comment seriously.
