Why is/was Vince so fond of Shawn Michaels?

Going back to the stunts Michaels pulled back in the middle to late '90s, why did Vince not take action and punish him or whatnot. Was it because of the ratings war and Vince not thinking he would be able to compete with WCW in the ratings war with Michaels united with Hall and Nash? Did Vince just not like Bret as much as Michaels? (Seeing as most of the stunts HBK pulled were on, or relating to, the Hart Foundation)

He sucks like a dyson hoover possibly?

Jordan 01-29-2007 12:14 PM

Probably because he didnt do anything. He was just difficult I think (from what I have herd/read/seen).

"Being Difficult" gets you punished in many cases. To say he didn't do anything begs the question why so many other "Difficult" stars have been punished.

Anybody Thrilla 01-29-2007 12:25 PM

Maybe because he was the headliner? The show stopper? The main event?

Anybody Thrilla 01-29-2007 12:26 PM

Or perhaps due to the fact that he was a tag team specialist. :shifty:

Xero 01-29-2007 12:44 PM

He should have gotten a lot of shit but he didn't. He even got in trouble for doing the crotch chops, and look where that got him. Instead of being severely punished (I think he got a fine) it became a staple of his gimmick.

Jordan 01-29-2007 12:45 PM

Its HBK he can do what he wants.

Xero 01-29-2007 12:52 PM

But WHY can he "do what he wants"?

Because he starred in playgirl

BigDaddyCool 01-29-2007 01:53 PM

Because he is Vince's coke buddy.

Anybody Thrilla 01-29-2007 01:54 PM

Maybe he has some incriminating evidence? The bill for Vince's ass implants, perhaps?

Stickman 01-29-2007 01:56 PM

I think it's because HBK is the goods in the ring and the goods on the mic if he wants to be.

Xero 01-29-2007 01:57 PM

I did not sleep with that young intern.

In fact, I was UP! ALL! NIIIGHHTT!

Jeritron 01-29-2007 02:02 PM

Have you have ever considered that he got cut a lot of slack because of the possibility that maybe, just maybe, he was the fuckin goods?

Yeah, I'm sure I can name a shit load of guys who were "the fuckin goods" and were treated like "fuckin shit".

But think of all the people who got cut slack who weren't the goods? I mean, I can't think of any, but I'm sure there were some. Ask one of these dorks that know way too much, they'll back me.

Jeritron 01-29-2007 02:21 PM

Yea, well Shawn was the companys only hope at one point. He has been punished, but in 96/97 he got away with a lot because what were they gonna do, tell him to walk and sign their own death certifficate? The way Shawn was those days he would have walked out on them in a heartbeat if he saw fit for his pride and ego. So they handled him very delicately.
Thats why Hunter was punished in MSG for doing the same thing as their champion, and Shawn wasn't. Maybe its not fair, but it makes a lot of sense.
They needed Shawn Michaels so badly at that particular time, that maybe he got away with things nobody else did or ever would (especially now).

Anybody Thrilla 01-29-2007 02:29 PM

They easily could have put Savio Vega in his spot. :shifty:

JTB31 01-29-2007 03:37 PM

Their star power wasn't all that great back then and if they had lost Shawn Michaels, the company would of sunk.Especially if he went to WCW who was already ahead of wwe at that time.

HBK is probably not far off the best in-ring performer of all-time. He's better than Bret, he's better than Flair and he's better than your Benoits and your Guerreros.

That's why.

The One 01-29-2007 03:53 PM

By the time Michaels became a huge dick and was difficult to work with, he was one of maybe 4 or 5 workers who were good draws. And by that time he had a close friendship with McMahon. We all have done it (or at least seen it) that those that are close with the big bossman get away with whatever they want.

For example, Paul London calmly and rationally puts for an argument for the Cruiserweights to maintain their aerial manoevers. The next week, he jobs his title to Nunzio and becomes a massive whiner on screen.

HBK was a lot more than difficult. Walking out on the company, faking injuries, being a dick to everybody, getting into fights... yeah, difficult.

Avenger 01-29-2007 03:57 PM

Yeah but HBK was ten times the worker Paul London will ever be. Sometimes brilliance gets you a little immunity in life.

I'm not saying it's fair, just how it is.

Anybody Thrilla 01-29-2007 04:01 PM

HBK's pretty sweet and all, but that 'smile losing' is the lamest shit ever.

Tell that to Bret Hart.

Kane Knight 01-29-2007 04:16 PM

Tell it to CM Punk. All I hear on these boards is praise for him like he's Jesus. And he's jobbing to Bobcore and "in the doghouse" for like a fiftieth of what Michaels did.

As for the whole "sign their death certificate" shit, this is not an all or nothing thing. You can punish someone without BAHGAWD HES FIRED AND GOING TO WCW!

yeah but so was bret hart.

It's interesting tho. like I was thinking about this the other day. They gave Bret the title, then almost immediatly they tried to make shawn the number 1 player in the fed, like they always favoured Shawn.

Then again Shawn never shot his mouth off about the direction of company like Bret did.

Hes not that good, not even bloody close.

He is just a higher flying version of Hogan or for that matter John Cena he gets beat up, he hits a move, kip up, Hulk up, no sell and superkick. Its the same old shit recycled and compacted 7 times over, I have hardly ever seen a match of HBK's that has stolen the show. Only about 2 spring to mind when I can name probably 5 each for Eddie and Benoit respectively in the last 4 years.

Michaels has good matches sometimes no doubt but to say hes better than Benoit or Eddie is a joke. Especialy now.

HBK is so over rated it is not funny, I mark for him from time to time but he is not that great.

Dorkchop 01-29-2007 08:58 PM

I'd imagine HBK was a two faced suck up at the time.

BigDaddyCool 01-30-2007 12:22 AM

Oh come on, how can you compare Benoit to Michaels? Beniot is boring as shit on the mic and is only good against a charismatic worker. While on the other hand Micheals is entertaining on the mic and can put on a show with anyone.

Don't get me wrong, Benoit can go in the ring, but he isn't a draw by any strech of the imagination. As for St. Guerrero...well it is hard to say anything crital now that he is dead, but he was good, just never Shawn Michaels good.

Idk, Micheals just had that extra i don't know what. And it was a different time. Now that WWE won the war, McMahon doesn't take the cruiserwieght's shit.

Jura 01-30-2007 12:36 AM

How can you misspell Michaels and Benoit but not Guerrero? Don't mess with my mind man!

Corkscrewed 01-30-2007 01:20 AM

I thought the answer is politics. He liked/s Michaels. Simple as that.

ttetf 01-30-2007 11:51 AM

In 96'-97' nobody in WWF, WCW, or ECW was on the level Michaels was as far as all around in ring ability, psychology, and charisma. He could also effectively portray both a face and heel. I'm not taking anything away from Flair, Bret, and others who stand the test of time as true greats. But those two years were all Michaels. Had he not been that great, Vince wouldn't have put up with his shit. Afterall, he chose to keep HBK but lose Bret. (Although in hindsight that wasn't the best move given HBK was done less than 6 months later) It boils down to money. Vince saw Shawn as the most marketable talent he had for those years and would do anything to keep him.

Raw vs HHH for the Title, Last Man Standing Match vs HHH, WM20 Main Event, Survivor Series 04, Raw vs Shelton, WM22 vs Angle, he carried Hogan to a good match at SummerSlam and Vince to a good match at WM.

there...thats more than '2' matches
